Book An Introduction to the Fifth Book of Hooker s Treatise of the Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Introduction to the Fifth Book of Hooker s Treatise of the Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity Classic Reprint written by Francis Paget and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Fifth Book of Hooker's Treatise of the Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity It may be well to explain and justify the use of the title Puritans, lest any one should think that this attempt justly to describe the position of Hooker's antagonists begins with the discourtesy and injustice of wantonly giving them a nickname. A nickname it undoubtedly was in Hooker's day and long afterwards, and those to whom it was applied disclaimed it earnestly, in its current connotation. Fuller, whose account is accepted by Neal 1, says that the term came into use in 1564, in connexion with the resistance offered to the stronger action then being taken to enforce conformity. Book Richard Hooker and his Early Doctrine of Justification

Download or read book Richard Hooker and his Early Doctrine of Justification written by Corneliu C. Simut and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Hooker and his Early Doctrine of Justification explores the doctrine of justification, the doctrine of faith and grace, and the doctrine of Scripture and use of reason in the early theology of Richard Hooker. In order to prove that Hooker was a Protestant Reformed theologian, Simuþ concentrates on Hooker‘s doctrine of justification as reflected in his Learned Discourse of Justification, which is the most important work of his early theology. Unlike previous books on Hooker which use primarily the theology of Luther and Calvin to draw conclusions, this book brings together quotations and ideas from the works of Luther, Melanchthon, Zwingli, Bucer, Calvin and Beza to show that Hooker was a Protestant Reformed theologian. Simuþ also discusses the theological context of Hooker‘s career by offering an analysis of the doctrine of justification in the theology of John Jewel, John Whitgift (Hooker‘s patrons), and Thomas Cartwright and Walter Travers (Hooker‘s Puritan opponents).

Book Richard Hooker and the Vision of God

Download or read book Richard Hooker and the Vision of God written by Charles Miller and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2013-07-25 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Miller's rigorous and sensitive examination of Richard Hooker's theology makes a valuable addition to the field of study of the cleric, one of the founding theologians of modern Anglicanism. Miller examines Hooker's works in detail, leading the reader through different facets of his vision of God: creation, Scripture, the sacraments, and practices of Christian devotion. Hooker's theology challenges an increasingly time-bound, relativistic approach to doctrine and truth; his sources were as wide, as ancient, and as modern as Hooker could make them. Miller's thoughtful analysis is informed throughout by an understanding of the context of Hooker's theological development against the backdrop of continental Calvinism and the remnants of Roman Catholicism in England. The growth of interest in Hooker among specialists has been accompanied by an abandonment of the serious study of Hooker's thought among theological students, clergy and theologians. Miller's work addresses thislack; Hooker's insights must not be forgotten in the daily distribution of theological food to Christian people. A study which attunes readers to Hooker's particular theological 'voice' and teaches its value both in his own context and as a present-day interlocutor, this volume will be of great interest to Christians and theological students alike.

Book The Church in Anglican Theology

Download or read book The Church in Anglican Theology written by Kenneth A. Locke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-17 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first systematic attempt to describe a coherent and comprehensive Anglican understanding of Church. Rather than focusing on one school of thought, Dr Locke unites under one ecclesiological umbrella the seemingly disparate views that have shaped Anglican reflections on Church. He does so by exploring three central historical developments: (1) the influence of Protestantism; (2) the Anglican defence of episcopacy; and (3) the development of the Anglican practice of authority. Dr Locke demonstrates how the interaction of these three historical influences laid the foundations of an Anglican understanding of Church that continues to guide and shape Anglican identity. He shows how this understanding of Church has shaped recent Anglican ecumenical dialogues with Reformed, Lutheran, Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches. Drawing on the principle that dialogue with those who are different can lead to greater self-understanding and self-realization, Dr Locke demonstrates that Anglican self-identity rests on firmer ecclesiological foundations than is sometimes supposed.

Book The Doctrine of Salvation in the Sermons of Richard Hooker

Download or read book The Doctrine of Salvation in the Sermons of Richard Hooker written by Corneliu C. Simut and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-02-14 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This specialist work in historical theology deals with the doctrine of salvation in the early theology of Richard Hooker (1554-1600) from the perspective of the concept of faith and with Hooker’s connections to the early English Reformers (W. Tyndale, J. Frith, R. Barnes, T. Cranmer, J. Bradford and J. Foxe) in crucial teachings such as justification, sanctification, glorification, election, reprobation, the sovereignty of God, and salvation of Catholics. The study proves that Hooker’s theology is firstly Protestant (to counter the views which picture it as Catholic) and secondly Calvinist.
