This book was released on 2018-02-18 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Elements of Science That a work should be written which might introduce students to the elements of all the sciences, has long seemed to the author of this book a thing to be desired. Having been unable to find associates for this purpose, he has ventured to undertake it himself. Strongly convinced that the student ought to be introduced to mental as well as to physical science, the writer has been careful not to omit the elements of psychology, logic, and philosophy, subjects which he thinks have been far too generally neglected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Science and Art, Vol. 2 of 2: Being a Familiar Introduction to Natural Philosophy and Chemistry; Together With Their Application to a Variety of Elegant and Useful Arts Hitherto we have considered the action of bodies on each other 'in masses, or what is called their mechanical actions; and for this purpose it was not necessary to attend particularly to the difference in the many species or kinds of matter, which we distinguish more or less readily. But if we present bodies of different kinds to each other in proper circumstances, a certain action takes place between the minute particles of one sort of substance upon those of another sort, by which, frequently, the individual or peculiar properties of each disappear, and a new substance is formed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Rarer Elements In attempting again to bring this work up to date for a new edition, the author has made numerous changes and additions throughout the book. The chapter on qualitative separation has been considerably enlarged by the inclusion of new analytical diagrams, together with some working directions and notes. The chapter on technical applications, also, has been much expanded by the addition of new material. A table of spectroscopic lines, and plates showing typical spectra have been added. For helpful suggestions in selecting the spectroscopic material the author acknowledges his indebtedness to Professor H. S. Uhler of Yale University. His thanks are again due, also, to many of those whose kindness has been mentioned in prefaces to previous editions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does science work? Does it tell us what the world is “really” like? What makes it different from other ways of understanding the universe? In Theory and Reality, Peter Godfrey-Smith addresses these questions by taking the reader on a grand tour of more than a hundred years of debate about science. The result is a completely accessible introduction to the main themes of the philosophy of science. Examples and asides engage the beginning student, a glossary of terms explains key concepts, and suggestions for further reading are included at the end of each chapter. Like no other text in this field, Theory and Reality combines a survey of recent history of the philosophy of science with current key debates that any beginning scholar or critical reader can follow. The second edition is thoroughly updated and expanded by the author with a new chapter on truth, simplicity, and models in science.

Book Physics the Elements Classic Reprint

Download or read book Physics the Elements Classic Reprint written by Norman Robert Campbell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physics the Elements The other fault is a complete lack of reference to the work of others. My large index of references was lost in the disorder of war-time removals, and I had no chance, and no time, to replace it. But perhaps the omission is not an unmixed evil. As is pointed out in the Introduction, there is very little original in the substance of the book; there is hardly a paragraph which is not a paraphrase of something that can be found in well-known treatises or papers. If complete references were given, the notes would be almost as bulky as the text, and the book would be quite unreadable; if they were in complete, they would probably be misleading and might cause offence. Moreover if anything valuable has been added to a mere compilation of what everyone knew before, it arises from a unity conferred by the passage of all this matter through a single mind; for though the conclusions reached are seldom new, they have not been easy to reach, but represent many hours of strenuous thought and result from many changes of opinion. Such unity, it seems to me, might be destroyed if the reader were constantly reminded of what others have said on the matter, even if they only said the same things in rather different words. Book An Introduction to Science Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Introduction to Science Classic Reprint written by Bertha May Clark and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Science For these reasons, without real blame being attributable to any one, the proper aim of the study of science in the high schools was defeated. Disturbers of the educational peace then pointed to the fact that approximately only five per cent of the high school pupils go to college. They questioned the dictum that the best education for the pupil preparing for college is the best education for the pupil going immediately into active life. It was pointed out that everybody who took science was being forced to study a great deal of pure theory that could not be connected with practical life without much subsequent study. Book The Elements of Laboratory Work

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Laboratory Work: A Course of Natural Science The course of work described in the following pages forms an introduction to all branches of Natural Science. The ele mentary nature of the book has caused me to pay more atten tion to method than to detail. Every student will need to follow closely and thoughtfully the performance of each ex periment, in nearly all cases making his own observations and measurements, in order that the capacity for independent judgment, as well as an interest in original research, may be awakened at the outset. When a fact or law, discovered by means of a student's own personal observation and intelligence, turns out to be very familiar to others more advanced, the value of the research to the student himself is but slightly impaired. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Natural Philosophy: Being an Experimental Introduction to the Study of the Physical Sciences Being again called upon to prepare a new edition of this work, I have anxiously endeavored to render it as complete as possible, and worthy, in some degree, of that patronage with which it has been previously honored. I hope that none of the rich contri butions to experimental physical science, which have been made public since the last edition, have been overlooked. In making these necessary alterations and additions, it has been my earliest desire, never to lose sight of the humble and limited design of this work, and which, indeed, first induced me to offer it to pub lic notice. Download or read book The Elements of Physics Classic Reprint written by S. E. Coleman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Physics This book is intended as a text for a first course in physics. It presupposes a knowledge of elementary algebra and plane geometry, but requires no further mathematical training. While complete in itself as a text-book, it assumes the support of a systematic course of laboratory exercises essentially equivalent to the author's Physical Laboratory Manual.' The exercises in this manual are referred to by number in the body of the text, in connection with the topics which they serve to illustrate. The text and the manual together present a single, coherent course in elementary physics. The subject-matter has been selected with reference primarily to its value as a part of a general education, and includes an unusual amount of information based upon the facts of our daily experience, introduced as illustrations and applications of phys ical principles. This relieves the teacher from the necessity of providing for and supervising a considerable amount of reference reading, in order to rescue the subject from the uninteresting barrenness to which it has been reduced in many of the more recent text-books. Book A First Year Course in General Science Classic Reprint

Download or read book A First Year Course in General Science Classic Reprint written by Clara a Pease and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Year Course in General Science It is not necessary, in this period of the making of high school curricula, to show that, for the first year of a high school, a general course in science is better than a year's study of one branch of science. Without discussion of the advisability of a general course, therefore, the author would state her reasons for the wide choice of subjects considered in this book. For pupils who complete a high school course, the study of general science should be an introduction to any ordinary high school work in biology, physics, chemistry, geology, and astronomy. No pupil can study all of these subjects, but he can learn that they are not separate sciences but branches of science. Whatever branch he studies later, he will find that the course in general science has given him the elements of the other divisions which dovetail into that branch. To suit the needs of pupils who are not able to finish a high school course, this first year science course must present a comprehensive view, though with no attempt to be complete. "The proper study of mankind" for the pupil at the age of twelve to fourteen years seems to be the world of which he is a part. The fact that the earth, important as it is to man, is not the only nor the greatest body in the universe; that it is not an independent body sufficient unto itself; and that its influence extends to other bodies - these are some of the subjects taken up in the first chapters. We Shall find, as we proceed, that all changes in the appearance of objects are accompanied by motion. Physics is the science which treats of matter and its motion, and of vibrations in the ether. Download or read book The Elements written by Philip Ball and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2021-09-27 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From water, air, and fire to tennessine and oganesson, celebrated science writer Philip Ball leads us through the full sweep of the field of chemistry in this exquisitely illustrated history of the elements. The Elements is a stunning visual journey through the discovery of the chemical building blocks of our universe. By piecing together the history of the periodic table, Ball explores not only how we have come to understand what everything is made of, but also how chemistry developed into a modern science. Ball groups the elements into chronological eras of discovery, covering seven millennia from the first known to the last named. As he moves from prehistory and classical antiquity to the age of atomic bombs and particle accelerators, Ball highlights images and stories from around the world and sheds needed light on those who struggled for their ideas to gain inclusion. By also featuring some elements that aren’t true elements but were long thought to be—from the foundational prote hyle and heavenly aetherof the ancient Greeks to more recent false elements like phlogiston and caloric—The Elements boldly tells the full history of the central science of chemistry.
