Book Evolving Approaches to Managing Marine Recreational Fisheries

Download or read book Evolving Approaches to Managing Marine Recreational Fisheries written by Donald Leal and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2009 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Increasing coastal populations, rising recreational demand, and growing conflicts with other users are adding to the challenge of managing marine recreational fisheries today. Traditional regulations - such as daily bag limits and seasonal closures - are often not enough to control fishing impacts and they tend to generate greater discontent and lower economic benefits in the angling community as they become more restrictive. This volume is the first to examine management approaches that promise to better control fishing, generate more information on fishing impacts, and give anglers more freedom to enjoy their sport."--BOOK JACKET.

Book An Introduction to the Economics of Fisheries Management

Download or read book An Introduction to the Economics of Fisheries Management written by W. C. MacKenzie and published by Bernan Press(PA). This book was released on 1983 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fishery management relates to a total system made up of resources, industry and trade. There are important linkages between these components. In contrast with other resource industries, common property in fishery resources implies that there is no market mechanism through which access to these resources could be allocated among users. In many cases, governments have been forced to intervene, rightly or wrongly, to fill this vacuum. Economically, rational fishery management necessitates the transformation of common property through some kind of limited entry system designed to optimize net benefits from the fishery. Management planning involves the definition of goals and policy objectives and the development of strategies to assure attainment of policy objectives.

Book Recreational Fisheries in the U S

Download or read book Recreational Fisheries in the U S written by Ellen K. Parker and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recreational fishing is a traditional American pastime integral to social, cultural, and economic life in coastal communities across the nation. This time-honored activity allows millions access to America's great outdoors each year, while generating billions of dollars in economic activity. Traditionally shaped by commercial forces, demographic, market, and ecological shifts are changing the nature of U.S. fisheries. Our nation's expansive coastal and ocean resources face increasing pressure as coastal populations grow, and more people pursue recreational opportunities in ecologically important marine and estuarine areas. The purpose of this book is to provide guidance for Agency consideration in its deliberations pertaining to development and maintenance of enduring and sustainable high quality saltwater recreational fisheries. This policy identifies goals and guiding principles to be integrated into NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service's (NMFS) planning, budgeting, decision-making, and activities, and includes examples of implementation concepts and strategies supported by NMFS. Moreover, this book provides a detailed overview of the operating structure of the "average" Northeast for-hire head boat and charter boat, and estimates the economic activity that for-hire businesses contribute to the Northeast's economy as measured by total employment, labor income, and sales. Lastly, this book examines challenges that have been identified with the NMFS' data collection efforts for managing marine recreational fisheries and steps the agency has taken to improve data collection and challenges that remain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living Marine Resources provides a thorough, up-to-date introduction to all aspects of fisheries science. This clearly written text offers insight into a topic of increasing importance--the wise utilization and management of sea fisheries to maximize production without exceeding their carrying capacity. Adoption of the approaches presented will improve the conservation and management of the many world fisheries that are suffering from years of inefficient practices. The book is divided into five sections, beginning with an introduction to the ocean environment and the various resource species. Part two examines fisheries biology, including age, growth, fecundity, and mortality, enabling readers to appreciate yield models designed to give estimates of maximum sustainable yield and maximum economic yield. The third part covers gear, methods, and landings and includes material on the handling and processing of seafood as well as aquaculture. In part four, yield models are presented to introduce students to theories on population dynamics, stock assessment, and management. The book concludes with coverage of recreational fisheries, including socioeconomic importance, catch and effort research, management techniques, and their interface with commercial fisheries. Living Marine Resources is an invaluable introduction to the subject for advanced undergraduate and graduate students of fisheries science. In addition, the material presented will be valuable to fishery and social scientists, fishery officers and administrators, and students in biology, engineering, economics, and law.

Book excerpt: Recreational Fisheries Development in India- A Study of Economics and Management with Special Reference to Kerala is a pioneering attempt to study the potential and to present the strategy for the development of recreational fisheries in Kerala. It unfolds its contents in ten chapters: the first chapter spelling out the background and objectives of writing this book, the second presenting a review of the literature relating to recreational fisheries development, world wide, the third dealing with the economic problem of valuation of recreational fisheries, the fourth outlining the status of recreational fisheries in leading fishing nations, including India, the fifth focussing on the recreational fishery resources of Kerala, the sixth probing into the demand for recreational fishing in Kerala, the seventh dealing with the supply prospects for recreational fishery services in Kerala, the eighth touching upon the (economic and social) viability of recreational fisheries development in Kerala, the ninth elaborating the management strategy to be followed for its development and the last chapter giving the summary of findings and conclusions of the study. The book in its core argue for the development of recreational fisheries in Kerala and prescribes management measures for realising this goal. It holds that development of recreational fisheries can contribute to the regional economy of the state through its linkage with tourism development and also help in the preservation of the ecology and culture of the landscape adjoining the rivers, reservoirs and backwaters of Kerala. The book is rich in its material coverage and bibliographic content. Being the first of its kind in India and probably at the international level as well, it should be of much interest to tourism planners, academics and others interested in the subject.
