Book An Introduction to the Comparative Phonetics of English and French in North America

Download or read book An Introduction to the Comparative Phonetics of English and French in North America written by Marc Picard and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1987-01-01 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook is designed to fill two basic needs. One is for a clear and straightforward presentation of the rudiments of articulatory phonetics which is geared specifically to the requirements of the (future) language teacher, and not exclusively to the student of linguistics, and in which the basic concepts and terminology are introduced via English as opposed to a variety of languages. An even greater need, perhaps, and one that has gone unfulfilled for too long, is for a simple but reasonably complete overview of the phonetic inventory of North American French.

Book The Sounds of French

Download or read book The Sounds of French written by Bernard Tranel and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1987-12-25 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This introductory textbook is principally addressed to English speakers who want systematically to improve their pronunciation of French - whether relative beginners or more advanced students. It describes the difficulties typically encountered, explains why they occur. and suggests ways to resolve them. It also explains how certain properties of the French sound system came about as the language changed over time, and it includes an examination of the relationship between French spelling and French pronunciation. Although focusing on the pronunciation of standard French, different pronunciations in other varieties of French (Québec French, Southern French, etc.) are also considered. In addition, from a more theoretical perspective, the book provides readers with a fundamental understanding of the way French sounds are produced and how they behave according to general linguistic principles. Overall the book stands as a multifaceted introduction to French sounds, drawing for its account on contrastive analysis, general phonetics, traditional knowledge and modern developments in phonology, historical linguistics, and orthography. Teachers of French will welcome Bernard Tranel's wide scholarship and firm grasp of teaching principles, while students will welcome the refreshing clarity of style and organization.

Book A Practical Introduction to French Phonetics

Download or read book A Practical Introduction to French Phonetics written by G. G. Nicholson and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Introduction to French Phonetics: For the Use of English-Speaking Students and Teachers In the revision that modern language teaching has undergone during the last quarter of a century two facts have been firmly established: first, that the pronunciation of a modern foreign language should be taught with great care from the outset; and, secondly, that pronunciation can neither be taught nor learned to the best advantage without the aid of phonetics. There is, moreover, to use the words of Dr. Breul, 'a growing conviction that the teaching of modem languages in our secondary schools should henceforth as a rule not be entrusted to foreigners but to duly qualified English men and women.' But whether the language he teaches be his native speech or not, the teacher can no longer afford to dispense with a phonetic training. For however successful he may be without the aid of phonetics, he can always improve his results with such aid. Especially is this true when it is his lot to teach French to English-speakers. Book Social and Stylistic Variation in Spoken French

Download or read book Social and Stylistic Variation in Spoken French written by Nigel Armstrong and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the assumptions of Labovian sociolinguistics are based on results drawn from US and UK English, Latin American Spanish and Canadian French. Sociolinguistic variation in the French of France has been rather little studied compared to these languages. This volume is the first examination and exploration of variation in French that studies in a unified way the levels of phonology, grammar and lexis using quantitative methods. One of its aims is to establish whether the patterns of variation that have been reported in French conform to those reported in other languages. A second important theme of this volume is the study of variation across speech styles in French, through a comparison with some of the best-known English results. The book is therefore also the first to examine current theories of social-stylistic variation by using fresh quantitative data. These data throw new light on the influence of methodology on results, on why certain linguistic variables have more stylistic value, and on how the strong normative tradition in France moulds interactions between social and stylistic variation.
