The exhibition, Jamaica Making: The Theresa Roberts Art Collection, is sited at the Victoria Gallery and Museum, Liverpool in 2022, and is a comprehensive presentation of the best of Jamaican art since the 1960s. The Theresa Roberts Art Collection is the private collection of Theresa Roberts, a Jamaican-born businesswoman and philanthropist, who has made the UK her home. This collection offers an important insight into the development of Jamaican art since the country gained independence in 1962. Indeed, the exhibition also acts to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Jamaican independence in 2022. Their extraordinary adventures take them from the Buddhist temples of fifteenth-century Putuo – China’s most important pilgrimage island – to their seizure by a British soldier in the First Opium War in the early 1840s, and on to a starring role in the Great Exhibition of 1851. In the 1850s, they moved in and out of dealers’ and antiquarian collections, arriving in 1867 at Liverpool Museum. Here they were re-conceptualized as specimens of the ‘Mongolian race’ and, later, as examples of Oriental art. The statues escaped the bombing of the Museum during the Second World War and lived out their existence for the next sixty years, dismembered, corroding and neglected in the stores, their histories lost and origins unknown. As the curator of Asian collections at Liverpool Museum, the author became fascinated by these bronzes, and selected them for display in the Buddhism section of the World Cultures gallery. In 2005, quite by chance, the discovery of a lithograph of the figures on prominent display in the Great Exhibition enabled the remarkable lives of these statues to be reconstructed.

Book excerpt: Merseyside has one of the richest public collections of art in provincial Britain, much of it originally assembled in nineteenth-century private collections and then donated to public institutions by the owners. The essays in this booklet discuss four of the nineteenth-century collectors, men whose tastes in pictorial art ranged from old masters to the Pre-Raphaelites. One of the four also collected, on a large scale, ceramics and other decorative artifacts. These individuals commissioned the work of local artists, to encourage and support them. They also founded societies and institutions, partly in order to display their collections and thus educate the local public. The riches of the art they brought into Liverpool or their support generated in the locality was, inevitably, an expression of their personal wealth - riches in art indeed. But these particular individuals were more than merely avid collectors of lofty patrons. They held clear views about the social and moral value of art and about its contemporary "progress", views expressed implicitly in their collections and in two instances also in public statements.

This book tells the fascinating story of its transformation from charity school to contemporary arts centre, the UK's first. In its rich story, Picasso, Stravinsky, Yoko Ono, Captain Beefheart, Simon Rattle and the inspirational Fanny Calder are just some of the names encountered, as key strands, including music, visual art, performance and the building's tenants, are traced.
