Book excerpt: An in-depth history of the controversial airplane, from its design, development and service to politics, power struggles, and more. The Boeing 737 is an American short- to medium-range twinjet narrow-body airliner developed and manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes, a division of the Boeing Company. Originally designed as a shorter, lower-cost twin-engine airliner derived from the 707 and 727, the 737 has grown into a family of passenger models with capacities from 85 to 215 passengers, the most recent version of which, the 737 MAX, has become embroiled in a worldwide controversy. Initially envisioned in 1964, the first 737-100 made its first flight in April 1967 and entered airline service in February 1968 with Lufthansa. The 737 series went on to become one of the highest-selling commercial jetliners in history and has been in production in its core form since 1967; the 10,000th example was rolled out on 13 March 2018. There is, however, a very different side to the convoluted story of the 737’s development, one that demonstrates a transition of power from a primarily engineering structure to one of accountancy, number-driven powerbase that saw corners cut, and the previous extremely high safety methodology compromised. The result was the 737 MAX. Having entered service in 2017, this model was grounded worldwide in March 2019 following two devastating crashes.? In this revealing insight into the Boeing 737, the renowned aviation historian Graham M. Simons examines its design, development and service over the decades since 1967. He also explores the darker side of the 737’s history, laying bare the politics, power-struggles, changes of management ideology and battles with Airbus that culminated in the 737 MAX debacle that has threatened Boeing’s very survival.

Book Boeing s First Great Success the 737

Download or read book Boeing s First Great Success the 737 written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Boeing 737 twin engine jetliner was to become Boeing's greatest success. Launched in 1967, the short range transport entered service the following year, and has remained in production ever since. In the 737, they have combined the best of all previous Boeing air craft. Among these is the fact that it has one of the lowest approach speeds of any jet transport, a great asset when landing at smaller airports with shorter runways. It also required minimum equipment for use in refueling. However, despite all its advantages, the 737 was soon overshadowed by the new, improved 747 Jumbo Jet.

This book was released on 2024-03-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Boeing 737 Crisis And The Fight For Redemption The Boeing 737 is a single-aisle commercial aircraft manufactured by Boeing at its Renton facility in Washington state. It was designed to complement the Boeing 727 on shorter and less traveled routes. The twin-engine jet retained the fuselage width of the larger Boeing 707 and accommodated six passengers across, but with two turbofan engines mounted under its wings instead of four. Conceived in 1964, the initial model, the 737-100, conducted its maiden flight in April 1967 and began commercial operations with Lufthansa in February 1968. Subsequently, the elongated 737-200 entered service in April 1968, marking the start of a series of developments that led to four generations of the aircraft, featuring various configurations catering to passenger capacities ranging from 85 to 215. This Book is a fascinating story of the Boeing Company, from its humble beginnings as a timber merchant's venture to its evolution into one of the world's leading aerospace giants. Explore Boeing's pivotal role in shaping the modern aviation landscape, from pioneering commercial airliners to cutting-edge military aircraft and groundbreaking space exploration ventures. Book Boeing 787 Dreamliner

Download or read book Boeing 787 Dreamliner written by Guy Norris and published by Quarto Publishing Group USA. This book was released on 2009-11-15 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story behind the innovative widebody jet’s “troubled but also path-breaking development,” with hundreds of photos (Airways). With the launch of its superjumbo, the A380, Airbus made what looked like an unbeatable bid for commercial aviation supremacy. But archrival Boeing responded: Not so fast. Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner would generate more excitement—and more orders—than any commercial airplane in the company’s history. This book offers a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the first all-new airplane developed by Boeing since its 1990 launch of the 777. With hundreds of photographs and diagrams, Boeing 787 Dreamliner closely details the design and building of Boeing’s new twin-engine jet airliner, as well as the drama behind its launch: the key players, the controversies, the critical decisions about materials and technology—the plastic reinforced with carbon fiber that make this mid-sized widebody super lightweight. And here, from every angle, is the Dreamliner itself, in all its gleaming readiness to rule the air.
