Book A Study of Effective Soil Compaction Control of Granular Soils

Download or read book A Study of Effective Soil Compaction Control of Granular Soils written by Vincent P. Drnevich and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2007-05-01 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although it is known that impact compaction tests are not appropriate for granular soils, these tests continue to be widely used. Excessive settlements frequently occur in granular soils where specified field compaction is based on Standard Proctor (ASTM D 698; AASHTO T 99) maximum dry unit weights. A laboratory test program evaluated alternative test methods for granular soil compaction control and showed that a Vibrating Hammer method (similar to British Standard BS 1377:1975, Test 14) has great promise for laboratory compaction of these soils.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual presents recommended testing procedures for making determinations of the soil properties to be used in the design of civil works projects. It is not intended to be a text book on soils testing or to supplant the judgment of design engineers in specifying procedures to satisfy the requirements of a particular project, although it has been used in basic soil mechanics courses. Test procedures included are Water Content, Unit Weights, Void Ratio, Porosity and Degree Of Saturation, Liquid and Plastic Limits, Shrinkage Limit Test, Grain-size Analysis, Compaction Tests, Permeability Tests, Consolidation Test, Swell and Swell Pressure Tests. Drained Direct Shear Test, Triaxial Compression Tests, Determination of Critical Void Ratio, Unconfined Compression Test, Modified Providence Vibrated Density Test, and Pinhole Erosion Test for Identification of Dispersive Clays.

Book Soil Compaction and Proof rolling of Subgrades

This book was released on 1960 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paper 1: The object of this paper is to give a brief outline of the test installation and techniques employed at the road research laboratory in carrying out the full-scale compaction tests and to give a summary of the main results obtained in the investigations. Paper 2 shows the cases where proof-rolling will be effective and those cases where it will not. Paper 3 deals with the use of flowing water as a compacting and stabilizing agent. Paper 4 presents a new approach to liquid limit determinations by a one-point procedure. Necessary equations, charts and tables, developed on the AASHO road test and easily usable by technicians, are presented.

Book Manual of Soil Laboratory Testing

Download or read book Manual of Soil Laboratory Testing written by K. H. Head and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, the first in a set of three, is a vital working manual which covers the basic tests for the classification and compaction characteristics of engineering soils. It will therefore be an essential practical handbook for all engaged on the testing of soils in a laboratory for building and civil engineering purposes. Based on the authoris experience over many years managing large soil testing laboratories, particular emphasis has been placed on ensuring that procedures are fully understood. Each test procedure has therefore been broken down into simple stages with each step being clearly described. The use of flow diagrams and the setting out of test data and calculations will be of great benefit, especially for the newcomer to soil testing. The book is complemented with many numerical examples which illustrate the methods of calculation and graphical presentations of typical results. The reporting of test data is also explained. Vital information on good techniques, laboratory safety, the calibration of measuring instruments, essential checks on equipment, and laboratory accreditation are all included. A basic knowledge of mathematics, physics and chemistry is assumed but some of the fundamental principles that are essential in soil testing are explained where appropriate. Professionals, academics and students in geotechnical engineering, consulting engineers, geotechnical laboratory supervisors and technicians will all find this book of great value. Book jacket.
