Book Water Sanitation and Hygiene Standards for Schools in Low cost Settings

Download or read book Water Sanitation and Hygiene Standards for Schools in Low cost Settings written by John Adams and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2009 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Diseases related to inadequate water, sanitation and hygiene are a huge burden in developing countries. It is estimated that 88% of diarrhoeal disease is caused by unsafe water supply, and inadequate sanitation and hygiene (WHO, 2004c). Many schools serve communities that have a high prevalence of diseases related to inadequate water supply, sanitation and hygiene, and where child malnutrition and other underlying health problems are common. Schools, particularly those in rural areas, often completely lack drinking-water and sanitation and handwashing facilities; alternatively, where such facilities do exist they are often inadequate in both quality and quantity. Schools with poor water, sanitation and hygiene conditions, and intense levels of person-to-person contact, are high-risk environments for children and staff, and exacerbate children's particular susceptibility to environmental health hazards. Children's ability to learn may be affected by inadequate water, sanitation and hygiene conditions in several ways. These include helminth infections (which affect hundreds of millions of school-age children), long-term exposure to chemical contaminants in water (e.g. lead and arsenic), diarrhoeal diseases and malaria infections, all of which force many schoolchildren to be absent from school. Poor environmental conditions in the classroom can also make both teaching and learning very difficult. Girls and boys are likely to be affected in different ways by inadequate water, sanitation and hygiene conditions in schools, and this may contribute to unequal learning opportunities. Sometimes, girls and female teachers are more affected than boys because the lack of sanitary facilities means that they cannot attend school during menstruation. The international policy environment increasingly reflects these issues. Providing adequate levels of water supply, sanitation and hygiene in schools is of direct relevance to the United Nations (UN) Millennium Development Goals of achieving universal primary education, promoting gender equality and reducing child mortality. It is also supportive of other goals, especially those on major diseases and infant mortality." - p. iii

Book Introduction to Industrial Hygiene

Download or read book Introduction to Industrial Hygiene written by Ronald M. Scott and published by CRC PressI Llc. This book was released on 1995 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a non-encyclopedic introductory textbook of industrial hygiene. Based on years of teaching a single-semester course on the topic, it presents a broad survey of the field and addresses the typical student. Introduction to Industrial Hygiene is divided into three sections. The first section focuses on chemical hazards, presenting the basics of toxicology, the problems of skin contact and inhalation, the detection and control of airborne contaminants, and the threat of fire or explosion. The first part also describes government regulations and the agencies that enforce them. The second part of the book discusses injury from physical causes, including sound, radiation, heat, and accidents. This part also contains an introduction to ergonomics. The third part describes a range of industries that are major sources of both employment and potential injury, and it applies the principles outlined in the first two parts. At the end of each chapter, the material covered is summarized in a Key Points section. References are provided both to background material and to sources that expand beyond the scope of the chapter. Problems sets have practical bases and lead students into the CFR to familiarize them with the contents and the manner of locating information in the CFR. Extensive appendices provide practical information and allow the text to continue being a valuable source of reference for the student.

Book School Hygiene and the Laws of Health

Download or read book School Hygiene and the Laws of Health written by Charles Porter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Hygiene and the Laws of Health: A Text-Book for Teachers and Students in Training The matter upon which this book is founded, formed the basis of a course of lectures delivered to the teachers acting under the Education Committee of Sheffield and the students of the Sheffield Training College. Some of those ,who attended the lectures being kind enough to consider them of value in connection with their school work, it was determined to arrange them in book form, in the hope that the information they contained might be of assistance to teachers elsewhere. The idea of the Education Committee in arranging for the course of lectures, was to afford the teachers an opportunity of acquiring such information as might assist them in protecting the health of the school children. It was desired that the course might include instruction, not only in what have been called the "laws of health," which the teachers might in turn impart to the children, but also hints on the manner of detecting diseases likely to be met with in school. The lectures themselves were largely modelled on the plan set out in the syllabus for the Sanitary Institute examination in School Hygiene: each system in the body was taken up in turn, the structure and functions of the organs composing it were considered, and the modes in which they might be affected by school conditions and disease, and how they were to be protected were described. The arrangement adopted for the lectures has been continued in the following pages, and each system has been treated of in a separate chapter in the first part of the book.
