Many thoughtful persons have wished to become acquainted at first hand with Philo; and yet the scarce ness of Yonge's translation, the expense of Drummond's work, the extensiveness of Philo's writings, and the lack of pointers as to where to search for the grains of gold scattered in that interminable forest of words have discouraged many. There seemed to be need of a brief classified outline of the most important of Philo's utter auces, with rigorous references which might enable him who runs to read. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philo Judaeus, Vol. 2 of 2: Or the Jewish-Alexandrian Philosophy in Its Development and Completion Some, whom he characterizes as atheists, were content with an attitude of doubt; but others went further, and boldly asserted that there was no God at all, and that he was merely said to exist by men who had over shadowed the truth with mythical inventions. The latter were under the necessity of offering a theory antagonistic to theism, and accordingly maintained that nothing existed but the perceptible and visible universe, which had never come into being and would never perish, but was unbegotten and incorruptible, without a guardian, a pilot, or a protector. Since there was thus no invisible and intelligible cause outside of perceptible things, it was assumed that everything in the cosmos was borne along by spontaneous motion, and that arts and studies, laws and customs, were due to the activity of the human mind alone. Others, who are described as Chaldseans, embraced a pantheistic theory. They too maintained that the phenomenal world was the only existence; but they declared either that it was itself God, or that it included God within itself as the soul of the universe. Apart from phenomena there was no cause, but the periods of the sun and moon and the other heavenly bodies determined the distribution of good and ill, and thus everything was handed over to the dominion of fate and necessity. To these speculations Philo opposed the doctrine of Moses, the beholder of the invisible nature, and seer of God," according to which the Divine exists, and the supreme God** is neither the cosmos nor the soul of the cosmos, nor are the heavenly bodies the prime causes of human events. As the book was in uncial Greek characters of the ninth century, and adorned with interesting marginal pictures, and was ap patently unpublished, I determined to examine it carefully. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Philo Judæus Publication of a small book on Philo needs no apology. In all the great body of literature devoted to him and his thought, there is no satisfactory work which can be given the general reader to introduce him to the subject. What brief studies exist are antiquated by recent researches, and in no case were written to serve the double purpose of helping the beginner to make a start in an intelligent reading of Philo and of presenting what is now the point of view from which all study of Philo must, whether in agreement or disagreement, depart. The problem of the relation of early Christianity to its environment, which has engrossed historians of religion, and which conservative scholars - conservative technically as well as theologically - have tended to belittle or neglect, is the great problem of the next generation of students in the field. It has been easy to dismiss the work of historians of religion who have been content simply to list pagan parallels to the New Testament, so long as conclusions of great importance were drawn from mere similarities between early Christian ideas and those of religions scattered from India to Britain. Of Parallels preserved at Venice were communicated to him by Banduri, and that this ms. Was older than his own Vatican copy. This ms. Must be the one described by Mont faucon in his Italian Diary (p. 36 Eng. Trans). We spent the afternoon in viewing the Grecian Archbishop of Philadelphia's mss. I took notice among his mss. A vellum book of an excellent character and the eleventh century, St John Damascene's Parallels and other pieces of his. I suppose this copy now to be in the Nanian Library. And there must be many copies of this collection of quotations in the different Europe libraries, which would repay an examination.
