Download or read book Conversionary Sites written by Britt Halvorson and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2018-06-28 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on more than two years of participant observation in the American Midwest and in Madagascar among Lutheran clinicians, volunteer laborers, healers, evangelists, and former missionaries, Conversionary Sites investigates the role of religion in the globalization of medicine. Based on immersive research of a transnational Christian medical aid program, Britt Halvorson tells the story of a thirty-year-old initiative that aimed to professionalize and modernize colonial-era evangelism. Creatively blending perspectives on humanitarianism, global medicine, and the anthropology of Christianity, she argues that the cultural spaces created by these programs operate as multistranded “conversionary sites,” where questions of global inequality, transnational religious fellowship, and postcolonial cultural and economic forces are negotiated. A nuanced critique of the ambivalent relationships among religion, capitalism, and humanitarian aid, Conversionary Sites draws important connections between religion and science, capitalism and charity, and the US and the Global South.

Download or read book Memory and the Mountain written by Timothy Clack and published by British Archaeological Reports Oxford Limited. This book was released on 2007 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers the relationships between memory, experience and landscape from insights gained conducting ethnographic research; its primary focus is the Wachagga of Kilimanjaro, East Africa. In so doing this investigation into the memoryscape mightbe labelled an 'archaeological ethnography' for not only is it an ethnography produced by an archaeologist, it was conducted with archaeological applications in mind. The motivation of this ethnographical research was the theorisation of some issues involved in landscape archaeology. There has been considerable attention given to the religious dimensions of archaeological landscapes. The purpose of this study is to augment such appreciations by theorising the complex environmental relationsof a contemporary culture. Such theorisation enables recognition of the wealth of human experience that is archaeologically unknowable.

Book Protestantism A Very Short Introduction

Download or read book Protestantism A Very Short Introduction written by Mark A. Noll and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2011-08-25 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark A. Noll presents a fresh and accessible history of Protestantism from the era of Martin Luther to the present day. Beginning with the founding of Lutheran, Reformed, Anglican, and Anabaptist churches in the sixteenth-century Reformation, he also considers the rise of other important Christian movements like Methodism and Pentecostalism. Focussing on worldwide developments, rather than just the familiar European and American histories, he considers the recent expansion of Protestant movements in Africa, China, India, and Latin America, emphasising the on-going and rapidly expanding story of Protestants worldwide. Noll examines the contributions from well-known figures including Martin Luther and John Calvin, along with many others, and explores why Protestant energies have flagged recently in the Western world yet expanded so dramatically elsewhere. Highlighting the key points of Protestant commonality including the message of Christian salvation, reliance on the Bible, and organization through personal initiative, he also explores the reasons for Protestantism's extraordinary diversity. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly.
