Book An Introduction to Greek Art

Download or read book An Introduction to Greek Art written by Susan Woodford and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-26 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The four centuries between the composition of the Homeric epics and the conquests of Alexander the Great witnessed an immensely creative period in Greek art, one full of experimentation and innovation. But time has taken its toll; damaged statues have lost their colour and wall paintings have been totally destroyed. And yet sympathetic study of surviving sculpture and of drawing on vases can give extraordinary insight into and appreciation of these once brilliant works This book, designed originally for students, introduces the reader to Greek sculpture and vase painting in the critical period from the eighth to the fourth centuries BC. The works discussed are generously illustrated and lucidly analysed to give a vivid picture of the splendor of Greek art. The up-dated second edition includes a new chapter examining art in Greek society, a timeline to help relate artistic development to historical events, an explanation of how dates BC are arrived at, a brief overview of Greek temple plans and a further reading list of recent books. This clear, approachable and rigorous introduction makes the beauty of Greek art more readily accessible and comprehensible, balancing description with interpretation and illustration, and is an invaluable tool to help develop insight, appreciation and comprehension.

Book A History of Greek Sculpture Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Greek Sculpture Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Alexander Stuart Murray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Greek Sculpture, Vol. 2 of 2 IT may be that an acquaintance with the personality of an artist, does not promote in the end a true judgment of his work. But we cannot deny that it has often furnished the pages of the historian with charm and vivacity. The History of Greek Sculpture presents no such opportunity. It has no Lives to beguile the student along an arduous path. Only here and there an incident, handed down on mostly a dubious authority, breaks the narrative of work done and the examination of what remains of it to our day. The sculptors of ancient Greece seem to have lost themselves in their art, and this might have been a less misfortune for us, if it also had not since their time disappeared in a great measure. Download or read book A Handbook of Greek Sculpture Classic Reprint written by Ernest Arthur Gardner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-27 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Greek Sculpture I have not felt able to embody his conclusions in the text Of a handbook for students. In dealing with the later portion of the history of sculpture, I have endeavoured to follow the same principles as in the earlier portion, and consequently I am again precluded from the discussion of many interesting problems as to which I do not feel justified in expressing a dogmatic opinion, while I have not space to give, even in summary, the arguments on each side. I regret that I am unable to fulfil my conditional promise Of an appendix on the discoveries of the French excavators at Delphi, no Official publication having as yet been issued. Book How to Read Greek Sculpture

Download or read book How to Read Greek Sculpture written by Seán Hemingway and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2021-09-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sculptural tradition developed by the ancient Greeks is justifiably considered one of the most remarkable achievements of Western art. This richly illustrated volume introduces eight centuries of Greek sculpture, from the early rectilinear designs of the Geometric period (ca. 900–700 B.C.) through the groundbreaking creativity of the Archaic and Classical periods to the dramatic monumental achievements of the Hellenistic Age (323–31 B.C.). A generous selection of objects and materials—ranging from the sacred to the everyday, from bronze and marble to gold, ivory, and terracotta—allows for an especially appealing picture not only of Greek art but also of life in ancient Greece. Sculptures of deities such as Zeus, Athena, and Eros and architectural elements from temples are included, as are depictions of athletes and animals (both domesticated and wild), statuettes of dancers and actors, funerary reliefs, perfume vases, and jewelry. The informative text provides a comprehensive introduction and insightful discussions of forty objects selected from the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Full-page photographs of the featured works are supplemented by many illuminating details and comparative illustrations. The latest in The Met’s widely acclaimed How to Read series, this publication reveals how, more than two millennia ago, Greek artists brilliantly captured the fundamental aspects of the human condition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the sixth and fifth centuries BC, Greek sculpture developed into a fine art. With the human figure as its main subject, artists worked to represent it in increasingly natural terms. This book explores the material aspects of Greek sculpture at a pivotal phase in its evolution. Considering typologies and function, an international team of experts traces the development of technical characteristics of marble and bronze sculpture, the choice of particular marbles in different areas, and the types of monuments that were created on the Greek mainland, the islands and the west coast of Asia.

Download or read book A History of Greek Sculpture written by A. S. Murray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Greek Sculpture: From the Earliest Times Down to the Age of Pheidias A narrative of the rise and progress of Greek sculpture involves many questions on which there are now differences of Opinion, and, much as a continuous statement of results would have been preferable, it has at times been necessary to enter into argument. Where the argument is based on less im portant details, I have endeavoured to confine it to foot-notes. But there are also questions on which the opinion commonly received has seemed to me erroneous, and here again some degree of discussion has been unavoidable, the details being as far as possible consigned to smaller type. In a history of Greek sculpture notes and references are indispensable, and may be said to need no apology. What I wish to defend is the extensive use I have made of them, partly, as has just been said, to relieve the narrative, and partly also to show my constant indebtedness to writers who have worked out one or other of the numerous problems of Greek art. It may be said that in devoting the earlier chapters to an explanation of certain main principles in imaginative and in industrial art, with many instances of the earliest condition of handicraft, I have overstepped the limits of a reasonable introduction to the subject of Greek sculpture. But sculpture is an art which even in its highest phases, as well as in its rise and early progress, cannot, I am convinced, be fully appreciated otherwise than by a preliminary study of these questions. Book The Emergence of the Classical Style in Greek Sculpture

Download or read book The Emergence of the Classical Style in Greek Sculpture written by Richard Neer and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-10-22 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this wide-ranging study, Richard Neer offers a new way to understand the epoch-making sculpture of classical Greece. Working at the intersection of art history, archaeology, literature, and aesthetics, he reveals a people fascinated with the power of sculpture to provoke wonder in beholders. Wonder, not accuracy, realism, naturalism or truth, was the supreme objective of Greek sculptors. Neer traces this way of thinking about art from the poems of Homer to the philosophy of Plato. Then, through meticulous accounts of major sculpture from around the Greek world, he shows how the demand for wonder-inducing statues gave rise to some of the greatest masterpieces of Greek art. Rewriting the history of Greek sculpture in Greek terms and restoring wonder to a sometimes dusty subject, The Emergence of the Classical Style in Greek Sculpture is an indispensable guide for anyone interested in the art of sculpture or the history of the ancient world.

Download or read book A Short History of the Ancient Greek Sculptors Classic Reprint written by H. Edith Legge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-11 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Ancient Greek Sculptors AM happy to accept the suggestion that I should with a few words introduce Miss Legge's book. In the first place, having read the book in manuscript, I can affirm that it is trustworthy, giving a sketch of what is most clear and definite in our knowledge of Greek sculpture. That it will be a very good thing to accustom young people to the healthful and beautiful forms in' which Greek sculpture delighted, seems quite clear. For one thing, all educational reformers insist on the necessity of systematically accustom ing boys and girls to use their eyes, to observe accurately and minutely. Those who are instructed in physical science learn to look at objects with care; but this point is neglected in literary edu cation. To see rightly what is brought before the eyes is no easy matter; cannot, in fact, be done except as the result of training. Yet to have this power is an inestimable benefit all through life.
