Book excerpt: Mathematical modeling of perennial freeze and thaw is used in geocryology to solve both scientific and engineering problems. The surface temperature of a substrate is given as either a constant (stationary problem) or a function with a fixed period of fluctuation (periodic problem). In this paper a numerical permafrost model is developed for the southern Siberia region to study the influence of rhythmic climate change on the dynamics of permafrost. The mathematical model is represented as a two-dimensional heat conduction problem for a moist substrate with the latent heat effect for complex geological structures. This model takes into account a complex periodic temperature change at the soil surface and a stable heat flow at the lower and lateral boundaries for a steady domain. The enthalpy method to arrive at a numerical solution for this problem is used. It has been realized as a fully implicit local one-dimensional finite-difference scheme on an irregular grid. The calculations of the dynamics of temperature fields and permafrost boundaries are discussed to evaluate this scheme for the southern permafrost region of Eastern Siberia. The modeled results show that transects of temperature fields along some profiles (particularly at sites with complex geological structures) contain more information about permafrost dynamics than do ground temperature profiles from isolated boreholes.

Book excerpt: Frozen soil has a major effect in many hydrologic processes, and its impacts are difficult to predict. A prime example is flood forecasting during spring snowmelt within the Canadian Prairies. One key driver for the extent of flooding is the antecedent soil moisture and the possibility for water to infiltrate into (partly) frozen soils. Therefore, these situations are crucial for accurate flood prediction at every spring. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the water flow and heat transport within available hydrological models to predict the impact of frozen and partly frozen soil on infiltration and percolation. A standardized data set was developed for water flow and heat transport into (partial) frozen soil by laboratory experiments using fine sand within a one-dimensional (1-D) soil column. A 1-D soil column having a length of 107 cm and diameter of 35.6 cm was built and equipped with insulation to limit heat exchange only through the soil surface. A data logger collected the moisture content and temperature by five FDR sensors which have been installed at a distance of 15 cm from each other. During the experiments, temperature, soil moisture, and percolated water was observed at different freezing conditions (-5°C, -10°C, and -15°C) as well as at thawing conditions when the air temperature was increased to +5°C. Distribution of soil moisture and soil temperature in the soil column was plotted for the experimental data over the freezing and thawing period. As some of the water in the soil begins to freeze, a decrease in water content was observed with a sudden increase in soil temperature near 0°C or slightly below of 0°C. This was, in fact, only a decrease in unfrozen water, not a decrease in total water content and was caused by the latent heat during freezing. Soil temperature showed noticeable differences at the top and the bottom of soil column during the change of state of water. The heat flux at the lower soil column was strongly limited due to iii the overlying soil. Thus, the soil temperature at the lowest sensors stayed in a freezing condition over several days and was not changing the temperature due to the latent heat which was released during the freezing process. Significant variation in soil moisture content was found between the top and the bottom of the soil column at the starting of the thawing period. However, with increasing temperature, the lower depth of the soil column showed higher moisture content as the soil was enriched with moisture with higher transmission rate due to the release of heat by soil particles during the thawing cycle. The soil system did not remain in the isothermal state during the thawing cycle. Although gravitational gradient was mainly responsible for the infiltration rate into the partially frozen soil, the distribution of moisture was greatly influenced by the temperature gradient. Vadose zone modeling using HYDRUS-1D was applied to the data set. Numerical results of the modeling were calibrated using the experimental results. It showed that the newly developed benchmark data set were useful for the validation of numerical models. The use of such a validated freezing and thawing module implemented into larger scale hydrologic models will directly reduce the prediction uncertainty during flood forecasting. Moreover, these benchmark data sets will be useful for the validation of numerical models and for developing scientific knowledge to suggest potential code variations or new code development in numerical models.

The variation of unfrozen water with temperature causes a soil system to freeze of thaw over a finite temperature range. Exact and approximate solutions are given for conduction phase change of plane layers of soil with unfrozen water contents that vary linearly and quadratically with temperature. The temperature and phase change depths were found to vary significantly from those predicted for the constant-temperature or Neumann problem. The thermal conductivity and specific heat of the soil within the mushy zone varied as a function of unfrozen water content. It was found that the effect of specific heat is negligible, while the effect of variable thermal conductivity can be accounted for by a proper choice of thermal properties used in the constant-thermal-property solution. Book excerpt: The effect of freezing on soil temperature and water redistribution was examined in four Mesocosms maintained at different initial water content profiles. An innovative experimental setup involving use of a frozen base layer acting as a proxy to permafrost beneath an active layer made up of packed and undisturbed peat cores was used. The experimental setup was successfully validated for its ability to maintain one dimensional change in temperature and soil water content in frozen soil. There was a substantial amount of water redistribution towards the freezing front, enough to create an impermeable frozen, saturated zone within 15 cm of the soil surface. The water movement was likely due to the potential head gradients between colder and warmer regions created by temperature effects on matric potential of frozen soil. In addition, there is enough evidence that water migration in form of vapour contributed to moisture movement towards the freezing front. Initial moisture profiles appeared to have a significant effect on the freezing induced soil water redistribution likely through differences in moisture dependant hydraulic conductivity. Initial soil moisture profiles also affected the rate of freezing front movement. Frost propagation was controlled by latent heat for long periods, while soil thermal conductivity and heat capacity appeared to control the rate of frost migration once the majority of water was frozen. Using the observations of this study, a conceptual model was proposed to explain freezing of an active layer on a permafrost plateau assuming a variable moisture landscape at onset of winter. Further, a one-dimensional model based on coupled cellular automata approach was developed. The model is based on first order conservation laws to simulate heat and water flow in variably-saturated soil. Inside the model, Buckingham-Darcy's -and Fourier's heat laws are used to define the local interactions for water and heat movement respectively. Phase change is brought about by the residual energy after sensible heat removal has dropped the temperature of the system below freezing point. Knowing the amount of water that can freeze, the change in soil temperature is then modeled by integrating along the soil freezing curve. This approach obviates the use of apparent heat capacity term. The 1D model is successfully tested by comparing with analytical and experimental solutions.
