Book Probabilistic and Reliability Design Procedures for Flexible Airfield Pavements elastic Layered Method

Download or read book Probabilistic and Reliability Design Procedures for Flexible Airfield Pavements elastic Layered Method written by Yu T. Chou and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A procedure was developed to analyze layered elastic flexible pavement systems in terms of probability and reliability. A computer program RELIBSIA was prepared to carry out the computations. Rosenblueth method, instead of the conventional Taylor series expansion, us used to estimate the expected value and variance of the strains (dependent parameters) based on the input mean values of independent parameters, i.e., aircraft load, layer thicknesses, and material moduli. The relationships between the reliability level and the allowable strain repetition of the designed system which is established with results computed using RELIBISA provide a decision-making tool for engineers to design pavements at desired reliability level. The design can be optimized by selecting thicknesses of the bituminous concrete and the base layers so that the pavement is failed in fatigue cracking and subgrade failure at nearly the same traffic level and the same reliability level. The reliability-strain curves have steeper slopes with the bituminous concrete strain failure criterion than with the subgrade strain failure criterion, indicating that for flexible pavements designed using the Corps of Engineer's failure criteria, the design has a greater degree of uncertainty in preventing subgrade failure than fatigue cracking of the bituminous concrete surface corps. However, this may not be true in real cases because the bituminous concrete failure criteria are determined based on controlled laboratory test data which do not consider the uncertainties existing in the laboratory-to-field correlations.

Book Pavement Design and Materials

Download or read book Pavement Design and Materials written by A. T. Papagiannakis and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-02-22 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive, state-of-the-art guide to pavement design and materials With innovations ranging from the advent of SuperpaveTM, the data generated by the Long Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) project, to the recent release of the Mechanistic-Empirical pavement design guide developed under NCHRP Study 1-37A, the field of pavement engineering is experiencing significant development. Pavement Design and Materials is a practical reference for both students and practicing engineers that explores all the aspects of pavement engineering, including materials, analysis, design, evaluation, and economic analysis. Historically, numerous techniques have been applied by a multitude of jurisdictions dealing with roadway pavements. This book focuses on the best-established, currently applicable techniques available. Pavement Design and Materials offers complete coverage of: The characterization of traffic input The characterization of pavement bases/subgrades and aggregates Asphalt binder and asphalt concrete characterization Portland cement and concrete characterization Analysis of flexible and rigid pavements Pavement evaluation Environmental effects on pavements The design of flexible and rigid pavements Pavement rehabilitation Economic analysis of alternative pavement designs The coverage is accompanied by suggestions for software for implementing various analytical techniques described in these chapters. Book Structural Design and Modelling of Flexible Pavement Containing Cold Bituminous Emulsion Mixtures

Download or read book Structural Design and Modelling of Flexible Pavement Containing Cold Bituminous Emulsion Mixtures written by Oluwaseyi Lanre Oke and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-08 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the effect of cold bituminous emulsion mixtures containing recyclates when used as the road base on the performance of a flexible road pavement in terms of equivalent standard axel loads. The mechanistic-empirical method of flexible pavement design was used and modelling tools used were the KENLAYER, BISAR 3.0 and OLCRACK. The hypothetical examples presented showed that KENLAYER, though time consuming, may be better than BISAR 3.0 for analysing pavements containing CBEMs as road base layers since the materials are non linear in elastic response. When KENLAYER seemed not to be sensitive enough in analysing the pavements with thin surfacing layer thicknesses of 30mm for horizontal strains at the bottom of the surfacing layer, OLCRACK proved in this regard, though the stiffness values calculated in the KENLAYER had to be used. However, in order for OLCRACK to have better application in modelling pavements containing non linear elastic layers, experimental modification reflecting the non linearity of the CBEMs would have to be introduced to the software. OLCRACK is basically good for estimating fatigue lives to failure for linear elastic layers in multi-layer analysis of flexible pavements.
