Book An Introduction to Early Welsh Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Introduction to Early Welsh Classic Reprint written by John Strachan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Early Welsh I think I must draw up and print outlines of middle-welsh grammar. I cannot well teach without some book, and the beginner is lost in the wilderness of the Grammatical Celtica. His original intention evidently was to publish a mere sketch of the grammar, somewhat like his old-irish Paradigms. But at the suggestion of his friend and colleague, Professor T. F. Tout, he decided to expand the Grammar on the larger and fuller lines of the present volume. At the same time the plan of adding a Reader of excerpts from mediaeval Welsh literature took concrete shape in the course of conversations and correspondence with Dr. Evans. On both these tasks he began to work during the Summer Term of 1907. With what amazing rapidity he must have toiled to have all but completed the work by the end of the following August! Giving up a visit to Germany to which he had long been looking forward, he devoted the whole long vacation to the preparation and printing of his book. At the moment of his death, on the 25th of September, both the Grammar and Reader were in type, and he had read a first, and in some cases a second, proof. Writing to Professor Thurneysen a week before his death, he says that he had then only the notes and vocabulary to add. Book Letters on Welsh History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Letters on Welsh History Classic Reprint written by Samuel Jenkins and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters on Welsh History These letters are offered to the public in a very imperfect form, because the author has been incessantly engaged in the laborious duties and cares of life from a very early period. But he has sought for knowledge of every kind, nevertheless. Amidst such constant engagement he never found time to study grammar or the rules of composition. On these heads, therefore, the work will be open to some objections, but as to the facts and deductions he feels confident that few objections can be justly raised. They have already been subjected to the ordeal of a critical examination by learned Welshmen in his native land; men possessing every advantage from their knowledge of Welsh history to judge of their correctness. Book A Welsh Family From the Beginning of the 18th Century Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Welsh Family From the Beginning of the 18th Century Classic Reprint written by Caroline E. Williams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-03 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Welsh Family From the Beginning of the 18th Century I have been able to make some additions and correo tions to the history of the Welsh Family. For the account of the district of Llangynwyd, from which they sprang, I am indebted to a very interesting work written by Mr. Evans of Llangynwyd, to whom my warm thanks are due. His history of Llangynwyd is rich in carefully collected facts which throw great light on the material and moral development of the people of that part of South Wales. I am indebted to Mr. Evans also for the introduction to Mr. Thomas of Cardiff, the accomplished artist, who has made the sketch of the old house at Tynton for me. It is a faithful representation of it in its present somewhat depressed condition, shorn of its wing, and deprived of some of its windows. The beauty of the situation in which it stands is clearly indicated. My cousin, George Ashburner (a great-grandson of George Cadogan Morgan) has converted some rough sketches made by me very long ago, into the drawings of Llandaff Cathe dral and the old house at Bridgend, which are repro duced in this book. Book Early Welsh Gnomic and Nature Poetry

Download or read book Early Welsh Gnomic and Nature Poetry written by Nicolas Jacobs and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2012 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the most enigmatic and fascinating of early Welsh poems are the sequences of stanzas commonly categorized as gnomic. In their most typical form they juxtapose vivid natural description with generalisations about the physical world and about human life, combining an evident delight in weather and the changing seasons, landscapes and seascapes, and birds, beasts and plants with a serious and often witty concern for the moral and practical aspects of daily life. The origin and function of these stanzas remains a puzzle; some may be associated with particular situations in narratives now lost, but as a whole they appear to have developed at an early stage into a recognised genre of their own. They may be supposed to have a philosophical purpose, serving to assert a continuity between the natural and moral orders; on the other hand they may be read simply as a repository of folk-wisdom. While their interpretation remains a matter for discussion, their language is comparatively simple, and they thus provide an engaging window on the ordinary conceptual world of mediaeval Wales. This volume presents texts of the gnomic stanzas from the most important collection, that in Red Book of Hergest, and from some other manuscripts, with a few other poems containing related material, some of them edited in English for the first time, together with a literary and linguistic introduction, explanatory commentary and extensive glossary. Nicolas Jacobs is an Emeritus Fellow of Jesus College, Oxford.

Book Lectures on Welsh Philology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lectures on Welsh Philology Classic Reprint written by John Rhys and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Welsh Philology The substance of these lectures was delivered at Aberystwyth College in 1874, so that they were intended to appeal, in the first instance, to Welsh students of Celtic Philology; but it is hoped that they will also be found intelligible to other than Welsh readers, and with a view to this the Welsh instances have been rendered into English throughout. Since they were first delivered they have been re-written almost entirely, and the author could have desired to repeat the process; but at that rate publication would have been out of the question, as his views are constantly undergoing modification, which will surprise no one aware how recently the systematic application of the comparative method of study to the Celtic languages began. Book Welsh Poems and Ballads Classic Reprint

Download or read book Welsh Poems and Ballads Classic Reprint written by George Borrow and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Welsh Poems and Ballads In a collection of unedited odds and ends from Borrow's papers bearing upon Wales, and dating from various periods of his career, there is one insignificant-looking sheet on whose back some lines are pencilled, beginning "The mountain snow." They are reproduced in the text, but deserve notice here because of the evidence they bring of Borrow's long-continued Welsh obsession and his long practice as a Welsh translator. Apparently they date from the time when he was writing "Lavengro," since the other side of the leaf contains a draft in ink of the preface to that book. Other sheets of blue foolscap in the same bundle - folded small for the pocket - are devoted to unnumbered chapters of "Wild Wales." Yet another scrap, from a much earlier period, is so closely packed in a microscopic hand that it reminds one at a first glance of the painfully minute script of the Bronte sisters in their earliest attempts.
