Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Dental and Physiology Descriptive and Descriptive Applied The author has almost essayed prendre la lune avec ses dents. If he has succeeded in his task of merely introducing some of the fascinating facts and theories of Dental Anatomy and Physiology to the younger generation of students, his attempt will be justified. Portions of the book have already appeared substantially in the Transactions of the Fifth International Dental Congress, and the Second Australian Dental Congress. In connection with the publication of the volume, the author owes an especial debt of gratitude to his eminent and learned friend, Dr. Edward C. Kirk, for his editorial services, so readily proffered and so willingly undertaken; and he desires to acknowledge his grateful thanks to the Publishers for the extreme care they have exercised with regard to the typography and the pictorial aspect of its pages. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Dental and Physiology Descriptive and Descriptive Applied Ax attempt has been made in the following pages to place before the reader a short account of the Essentials of Dental Anatomy and Physiology, and in consonance with the requirements of a utilitarian age. to indicate those aspects of such a subject which may have some direct practical bearing upon the science and art of Dental Surgery. Odontology is a matter of fundamental importance to one who has entered, or who is about to enter, upon the practice of this special branch of the treatment of disease. Hence it is important to decide what is necessary for the student to know, that he may be able to deal intelligently and intellectually with every phase of his adopted profession as he encounters it during his life's work. A further endeavour has been made to endow an admittedly unattractive topic with some degree of interest, and to create in the mind of the reader an atmosphere of regard which the contemplation of the Anatomy of the Teeth deserves and demands. Surely even a halo of romance can be found, if looked for, in this study, so closely is it interwoven with the Natural History of Man and animals on this planet. Human teeth have been imperishable structures - when not affected by disease - from countless ages; and their physical characters and enduring natures have been, are, and may be able to render them of the greatest value in medicolegal cases in which much happens to be involved. As an occasional means of identification of the illustrious dead, e. g., Louis XVII of France, and the Prince Imperial, son of Napoleon III, killed by the Zulus in 1879. or the victims of great calamities, such as extensive fires, like that of the Bazar de la Charite in Paris in 1897, the teeth, when exhibiting the results of surgical interference, have been found to be of enormous importance; in criminal cases their similar silent testimony may prove or disprove a legal argument; in the remains of prehistoric man they afford a clue to the nature of the food which supported life in those far-distant ages; and in indicating the habits of the individual of whose body they form a part, they may reveal the higher qualities or the baser constitution of his mental attributes. From a strictly scientific point of view, also, the modern zoologist, appreciating the value and importance of the dental armaments of the vertebrates, has employed some of their main features for the purpose of classifying and arranging, in their proper positions in the scheme of Natural History, several orders of mammals, such as the rodents, the whales, and the marsupials. Book Descriptive Anatomy of the Human Teeth Classic Reprint

Download or read book Descriptive Anatomy of the Human Teeth Classic Reprint written by G. V. Black and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descriptive Anatomy of the Human Teeth By my experience as a practitioner, as a teacher, and in my intercourse with fellow-practitioners, I have become convinced of a serious defect in the teaching of the details of the anatomy of the teeth, and in the systematization of the terms used in their description. This defect has been a constant drawback at the chair, in the laboratory, and most of all, in the college. The object of the present volume is to remedy, in a measure, this defect. To this end I have had constantly in view the needs of the dental student and practitioner. We have heretofore had excellent general descriptions in human and comparative dental anatomy; but these have dealt principally with the general forms of the dentitions of the mammalia and other orders of animate beings, rather than with specific descriptions of the forms of the various surfaces and surface markings, making up the sum of the forms of the individual teeth of man. Valuable as these works have been, they have left the acquirement of a knowledge of the details of the specific forms of the human teeth mostly to individual observation. By this means, many have attained to an excellent perception of the various forms of the human teeth; but it is not reasonable to suppose the profession generally will do this without some fixed guide. What the dental student wants most in the college, and in the office, is a systematized nomenclature of the several parts of the teeth in detail; and such a description as will call his attention successively to every part of each tooth, as Gray, in his Anatomy, has called attention to every part of each bone, however apparently unimportant. Book Physiology for Dental Students Classic Reprint

Download or read book Physiology for Dental Students Classic Reprint written by R. G. Pearce and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiology for Dental Students A knowledge of the fundamentals of human physiology is essential in the training of the dental student, because physiology constitutes, along with anatomy, the basic science upon which all medical and surgical knowledge is founded; and dentistry is a highly specialized department of surgical practice. To operate on the teeth without knowing something about the physiology of the body as a whole, would reduce the dentist to the level of a craftsman who, although perhaps very highly skilled in his technical work, was yet quite ignorant of the nature of the machine upon a part of which his work had to be done. But there are also practical reasons why the dentist should be familiar with physiology, for good health, and not good looks alone, depends very largely on sound teeth. The neglect of this fact may cause disturbances in bodily functions to which, at first sight, the teeth may apparently bear very little relationship; thus, extreme emaciation, with its consequent lowering of the normal resistance of the body towards disease and infection, is well-known to be frequently due to no other cause than some abnormal or pathological condition affecting the teeth; and, on the other hand, this very condition itself may become intractable to the most skilled dental treatment and hygiene, if measures are not taken at the same time to improve the general health. Although it is obviously beyond the province of the dentist to undertake the treatment of these general conditions, yet it is most important that he should be sufficiently familiar with the normal functioning of the human body to be able to recognize what is really at fault. A knowledge of the laws of nutrition and dietetics must therefore form a most important part of every course in dentistry, and these have received particular attention in this book. The physiology of the digestive system, of the circulation of the blood and of the nervous system is scarcely less important. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief d104 of Physiology for Dental, Pre-Medical, and College Students It is not the aim of this little volume to replace the larger text-books of physiology among medical students, but rather to antedate them. It is hoped that it may be accorded some favor by those teachers of medical physi ology who take up the detailed study of body functions in connection with laboratory experiments but precede this by an introductory view of the whole subject. This book was released on 2018-02-24 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aids to Dental Anatomy and Physiology Teeth have been defined by Professor Owen as being firm substances attached to the parietes of the beginning of the alimentary canal, adapted for seizing, tearing, lacerating, dividing, and triturating food. The chief mechanical agents in digestion.' This account of teeth is scarcely a definition; it is true of many, indeed of most, teeth, but it is certainly not true of all. Teeth are not always situated nor always used in the way described in the definition. There are many teeth that never erupt at all, and are never useful to their possessor for any purpose whatever - such, for instance, as the teeth of the baleen whales, the incisors of the female narwhal, dugong (and the mandibular teeth of the latter animal), and many other instances. Then teeth that no one would hesitate to classify as teeth are found in patho logical cysts, far from the scene of mastication; and if we fall back upon shape and structure for a definition, we should be forced to include the placoid scales of the shark tribe. Which, although situated on the outer skin of the animal, are structurally practically identical with its teeth.
