Book An Introduction to Breton Grammar Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Introduction to Breton Grammar Classic Reprint written by Percy Treasure and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Breton Grammar The principal object which influenced the writer in bringing out this small volume was a need - admitted to exist by not a few competent to form an Opinion for some simple exposition in English of the Grammar of the Breton Language, which would be of service to that large and rapidly growing section of the British race which desires an acquaintance with the literature and language of their Armorican relatives in Little Britain. Of this section a considerable proportion have been deterred by their imperfect knowledge of the third language hitherto essential to such acquaintance. And this definition of its scope may be said to determine the limits of its 'sphere of influence, ' for the writer makes no pretence to have compiled a treatise by the mastery of which, the tyro could be justified in supposing him self fully equipped for the purpose of sustaining a con versation in the Breton language. It will rather seek to demonstrate by rule and paradigm - many of the former strangely familiar on t/zz's side of the Channel - the high degree of excellence attained by this ancient tongue, and its faithfulness to its Celtic origin; and that too, despite both its complete isolation from its con geners in Great Britain, as well as the repressive efforts put forth from time to time, directly and indirectly, to deprive this language of its very existence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Breton Grammar To find a parallel to such an arbitrary and autocratic measure as that issued by the French Minister of Spiritual Affairs, and dated September 29th, 1902 (whereby over one million Breton people are deprived of all effective religious instruction by the insistence that such instruction be given in French only), it is happily necessary for us in Great Britain to go as far back as the time of the Reformation; when the partially - understood Latin service book was withdrawn from the Cornish Church, on the excellent plea that all public worship should be offered in accordance with Apostolic precept - 'in a known tongue' - at the same time with the utmost inconsequence the authorities imposed an English service book, hardly one word of which was intelligible to the Cornish people! That privilege which the Welsh were powerful enough to secure to themselves by statute law (v. Elizabeth; xiii. xiv. Charles II.), the Cornish, on the petition of their Anglophile gentry (on commercial grounds proh pudor!), as well as on account of their relatively small numbers, lost. May the Breton people escape the fate of their Cornish cousins, for jam proximus ardet Ucalegon! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Welsh Grammar Historical and Comparative Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Welsh Grammar Historical and Comparative Classic Reprint written by J. Morris Jones and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Welsh Grammar, Historical and Comparative "This book," as V. Henry says of his Breton Lexique, "has the misfortune to have a history." It would be tedious, even if it were possible, to relate it in detail; but the long delay in the appearance of the work calls for a brief account of the facts by way of explanation and apology. In the early nineties I contributed to the new edition of the Welsh encyclopaedia Y Gwyddoniadur an article on the Welsh language, which contained a sketch of Welsh grammar. This sketch was expanded in a course of lectures delivered to the Junior and Intermediate classes at Bangor after the foundation of the University of Wales. The idea occurred to me of preparing the substance of the lectures for publication as a textbook of Welsh grammar; but I was unable at the time to carry out the investigation which seemed to me necessary before such a book could be properly written. The work was intended to be a descriptive grammar of Modern Welsh with special reference to the earlier period. Late Modern Welsh is more artificial, and in some respects further removed from the spoken language, than Early Modern Welsh, owing largely to the influence of false etymological theories; and the object which I had in view was the practical one of determining the traditional forms of the literary language. Even scholars have been deceived by the fictitious forms found in dictionaries; thus "dagr" given by Silvan Evans, after Pughe, as the sg. of dagran, is quoted as a genuine form even by Strachan, Intr. 33;see below p.212 Note. I had however chiefly in mind the ordinary writer of the language, to whom a clear idea of the literary tradition is at least equally important. Book An Introduction to Early Welsh Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Introduction to Early Welsh Classic Reprint written by John Strachan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Early Welsh I think I must draw up and print outlines of middle-welsh grammar. I cannot well teach without some book, and the beginner is lost in the wilderness of the Grammatical Celtica. His original intention evidently was to publish a mere sketch of the grammar, somewhat like his old-irish Paradigms. But at the suggestion of his friend and colleague, Professor T. F. Tout, he decided to expand the Grammar on the larger and fuller lines of the present volume. At the same time the plan of adding a Reader of excerpts from mediaeval Welsh literature took concrete shape in the course of conversations and correspondence with Dr. Evans. On both these tasks he began to work during the Summer Term of 1907. With what amazing rapidity he must have toiled to have all but completed the work by the end of the following August! Giving up a visit to Germany to which he had long been looking forward, he devoted the whole long vacation to the preparation and printing of his book. At the moment of his death, on the 25th of September, both the Grammar and Reader were in type, and he had read a first, and in some cases a second, proof. Writing to Professor Thurneysen a week before his death, he says that he had then only the notes and vocabulary to add.
