Excerpt: ... for no other Reason than that the Bell- Weather took the Leap before them t And yet the greater Part of our pretended Improvements in Literature are little else than a careless Repetition of what others have faid as carelefly before us. Sect. ix. Of the Number Diversity, and proper Use of Accents. To set this Affair of Accent in a true Light it will be necessary to throw aside entirely the Ideas usually annexed to the Term by those who have treated of the learned Languages, and to consider it simply, as we experience its Effects in the English. It is from a due Observance of these Effects, that I will venture to lay dowri the following Rules, the Truth of which (however contrary to common Opinion) I hope sufficiently to illustrate by Examples ist. That Accents in English is neither the Tone of an articulate Voice nor simply the Time taken up in the Utterance of it; nor merely the Force or Loud i Loudness of such Voicebut the whole Momentum or Quantity of Sound emit ted to produce iti 2. That Syllables, being accented as variously as the Measures of their Length and Force can be combined, and the Measures of Syllables being considered as long, neutral and Jhort, there are two capital Distinctions in the Mode of accenting Syllables, vtZi the loud and the soft: The former belonging to Jhort Syllables, the latter to long ones. 3 That Words of more than one Syllable are not confined to a single Accent; nor Words of any Number of Syllables to a ruling one; even those of two Syllables having frequently two equal Accents; the one loud and short, the other soft and long. 4. That hence Syllables may be equally ac cented, though one of them be pronounced softly, and the other loud, provided the former be proportionably longer in Utterance than the...

Book Fixing Babel

Download or read book Fixing Babel written by Rebecca Shapiro and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 2016-12-02 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all think we know what a dictionary is for and how to use one, so most of us skip the first pages—the front matter—and go right to the words we wish to look up. Yet dictionary users have not always known how English “works” and my book reproduces and examines for the first time important texts in which seventeenth- and eighteenth-century dictionary authors explain choices and promote ideas to readers, their “end users.” Unlike French, Spanish, and Italian dictionaries compiled during this time and published by national academies, the goal of English dictionaries was usually not to “purify” the language, though some writers did attempt to regularize it. Instead, English lexicographers aimed to teach practical ways for their users to learn English, improve their language skills, even transcend their social class. The anthology strives to be comprehensive in its coverage of the first phase of this tradition from the early seventeenth century—from Robert Cawdrey’s (1604) A Table Alphabeticall, to Samuel Johnson’s Dictionary of the English Language (1755), and finally, to Noah Webster’s An American Dictionary of the English Language (1828). The book puts English dictionaries in historical, national, linguistic, literary, cultural contexts, presenting lexicographical trends and the change in the English language over two centuries, and examines how writers attempted to control it by appealing to various pedagogical and legal authorities. Moreover, the development of dictionary and attempts to codify English language and grammar coincided with the arc of the British Empire; the promulgation of “proper” English has been a subject of debate and inquiry for centuries and, in part, dictionaries and the teaching of English historically have been used to present and support ideas about what is correct, regardless of how and where English is actually used. The authors who wrote these texts apply ideas about capitalism, nationalism, sex and social status to favor one language theory over another. I show how dictionaries are not neutral documents: they challenge or promote biases. The book presents and analyzes the history of lexicography, demonstrating how and why dictionaries evolved into the reference books we now often take for granted and we can see that there is no easy answer to the question of “who owns English.”

Book Re Viewing Thomas Holcroft 1745 1809

Download or read book Re Viewing Thomas Holcroft 1745 1809 written by A.A. Markley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Holcroft was a central figure of the 1790s, whose texts played an important role in the transition toward Romanticism. In this, the first essay collection devoted to his life and work, the contributors reassess Holcroft's contributions to a remarkable range of literary genres-drama, poetry, fiction, autobiography, political philosophy-and to the project of revolutionary reform in the late eighteenth century. The self-educated son of a cobbler, Holcroft transformed himself into a popular playwright, influential reformist novelist, and controversial political radical. But his work is not important merely because he himself was a remarkable character, but rather because he was a hinge figure between laboring Britons and the dissenting intelligentsia, between Enlightenment traditions and developing 'Romantic' concerns, and between the world of self-made hack writers and that of established critics. Enhanced by an updated and corrected chronology of Holcroft's life and work, key images, and a full bibliography of published scholarship, this volume makes way for more concerted and focused scholarship and teaching on Holcroft. Taken together, the essays in this collection situate Holcroft's self-fashioning as a member of London's literati, his central role among the London radical reformers and intelligentsia, and his theatrical innovations within ongoing explorations of the late eighteenth-century public sphere of letters and debate.

Book A Genlis Education and Enlightenment Values

Download or read book A Genlis Education and Enlightenment Values written by Denise Yim and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-07-01 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering a unique approach to the study of late eighteenth-century/early nineteenth-century education, this book explores the life and motivations of a strong-minded, self-educated and enlightened English gentlewoman, Mrs Margaret Chinnery, who put Madame de Genlis’s educational ideas into practice with marked success. Beginning with a brief outline of Margaret’s own childhood and her adolescent efforts to educate herself, drawing largely on readings recommended by Genlis, the book continues through to her marriage, her children’s early and adolescent education, and ends with the benefits that the children gained in adulthood from their education. This book is not limited to a biography, as each section on the daily business of education is interspersed with a discussion and comparison of contemporary education authors and other writers, the values they espoused, which ones Margaret followed and why. It also draws on valuable surviving Chinnery documents which trace the Chinnery children’s education, Margaret’s correspondence with Genlis and a comprehensive catalogue of the Chinnery library. The book offers a unique opportunity to follow a real family from cradle to grave, and provides an intriguing illustration, at an individual level, of a female-crafted education embedded in Enlightenment values. This book will be of great interest to postgraduate students and scholars researching the history and philosophy of education as well as women in the Enlightenment.
