Download or read book An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis of Students Perceptions of a First year Experience Program written by Derrick D. Wheatley and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was to assess the perceptions of First-Year Experience (FYE) students on the factors that contributed to their success. The primary research questions seek to understand, “What factors directly impacted students who completed their First-Year Experience Program identity that contributed to their success? Which academic resources were identified by First Year Experience students that impacted their educational experience? How do student-mentor relationships influence the motivation of students in First-Year Experience programs?” The researcher conducted an interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) and conducted semi-structured interviews with ten students to examine their perceptions of first-year experience programs. This study contains suggestions for future research to gain a better understanding of First-Year Experience programs. The primary focus of the research is to understand student persistence and how it serves as a central focus in higher educational institutions. the First-Year Programs were created to decrease attrition and improve student success.

Book The Impact of a First year Experience Program on the Retention of Underrepresented Students at a Predominately White Institution

Download or read book The Impact of a First year Experience Program on the Retention of Underrepresented Students at a Predominately White Institution written by Karen DeVose and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of a first-year experience program on the retention of underrepresented minority students at an urban private predominately White institution. The study addressed the following research question: How do students articulate the value of their first-year experience program in helping them persist from freshman to sophomore year? The researcher conducted an interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) through three semi-structured interviews with four self-identified underrepresented minority undergraduate students to examine their perceptions of how the program influenced their retention from freshman to sophomore year. In the final analysis, each interviewee felt that the first-year experience program could contribute to their ability to be retained until their sophomore year. The study also concluded that peer mentoring has a positive effect on social integration, retention, and student satisfaction with the university for first-year unrepresented minority students. Therefore, this study recommends that the Student Success Program change its mentorship model from a cascade to a peer mentorship model to improve retention and social integration for underrepresented minority students in their first year.

Book Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis

Download or read book Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis written by Jonathan A Smith and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2012-08-14 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ′It is not often I can use "accessible" and "phenomenology" in the same sentence, but reading the new book, Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis...certainly provides me the occasion to do so. I can say this because these authors provide an engaging and clear introduction to a relatively new analytical approach′ - The Weekly Qualitative Report Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) is an increasingly popular approach to qualitative inquiry. This handy text covers its theoretical foundations and provides a detailed guide to conducting IPA research. Extended worked examples from the authors′ own studies in health, sexuality, psychological distress and identity illustrate the breadth and depth of IPA research. Each of the chapters also offers a guide to other good exemplars of IPA research in the designated area. The final section of the book considers how IPA connects with other contemporary qualitative approaches like discourse and narrative analysis and how it addresses issues to do with validity. The book is written in an accessible style and will be extremely useful to students and researchers in psychology and related disciplines in the health and social sciences.

Book The Problem of College Readiness

Download or read book The Problem of College Readiness written by William G. Tierney and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2015-03-30 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines how states, schools, and postsecondary institutions might best help improve college readiness and completion. Though more students are entering college, many drop out, especially those who are low income and/or of color. To address this problem, educational stakeholders have focused on the concept of “college readiness,” or the preparation a student needs to succeed in college. However, what it means to be college ready and how to help more students become ready are questions without clear answers. By way of historical and contemporary analyses, this book uses California as a case study to demonstrate how the state has endeavored to make postsecondary opportunity accessible for all students. The contributors also explore the challenges that remain and address what states and schools can do to improve college readiness and completion. “This book adds important information to the debates and discussions around this critical topic.” — Caroline Sotello Viernes Turner, coeditor of Understanding Minority-Serving Institutions

Book First Year Students Early Perceptions and Expectations of University

Download or read book First Year Students Early Perceptions and Expectations of University written by Heidi Amberley Pepper and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is a qualitative study exploring first year students' perceptions and expectations of their first year experience. Through a series of focus groups the researcher determined that first year students identified eleven themes as areas of concern and areas that contribute to the student perception of a successful year. These eleven themes fell within two broad categories of student defined success: academic performance and value, and independence and the development of the self. Successes in both of these areas lead to a successful year while a failure to meet one area had negative effects on the student and the perception of self.

Book Perceptions of Skill Development in a Living learning First year Experience Program

Download or read book Perceptions of Skill Development in a Living learning First year Experience Program written by Kerri Anna Smith and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of students and faculty involved in a living-learning first-year experience program at a small, liberal arts institution about developing skills for life-long learning including critical thinking, written communication, and reflection and engagement across disciplines. The researcher conducted a qualitative case study including focus groups with students and interviews with faculty involved with the first-year experience program. Three focus groups with a total of 19 student participants and individual interviews with 11 faculty participants were conducted. Interviews and focus groups were digitally recorded and then the researcher listened to each session multiple times to discern common themes and direct quotes. The findings demonstrated that: (a) Students felt that their critical thinking and written communication skills were positively influenced through the program. (b) Students felt that the attempt to enhance reflection and engagement across disciplines through co-curricular programming was not as successful. (c) Relationships between peers and faculty were two of the most important aspects of the living-learning first-year experience program for students. (d) Faculty similarly felt that critical thinking and written communication skills were positively influenced. (e) Faculty differed from the student opinion on the program's impact on reflection and engagement across disciplines and felt that the co-curricular programming helped to positively influence the development of multi-disciplinary perspectives. Recommendations for improvements included a stronger focus on the relationship between student affairs staff and academic affairs, more intentionality for co-curricular programming, increased uniformity among first-year seminars, and improvements in marketing of the program to internal and external stakeholders.

Book Exploring Living Learning Communities Through Students Experiences

Download or read book Exploring Living Learning Communities Through Students Experiences written by Amy Elizabeth Felder and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was designed to explore the lived experiences of students at a private university during their first year of college while members of a Living-Learning Community (LLC). Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was used to examine the experiences of eight students which sets the study apart from the larger context quantitative studies which have focused on the outcomes of LLC membership. Social Identity Theory served as the theoretical framework. The findings suggest a close link between the development of the LLC group identity and the personal growth each participant experienced throughout the year with reference to that group. While participants had various levels of connection to the larger LLC group, the group served as the catalyst for every student's individual personal and intellectual growth. Participants constructed both emotional and intellectual families within the LLC which were able to fulfill the individual needs of each member, connecting them to the LLC as well as to the larger university environment. Recommendations for practice include ways in which the connections forged through LLC membership could be applied to other students within the university environment. First generation students, students struggling academically, as well as students beyond their freshman year of school could all benefit from the intellectual and emotional family generated through LLC membership.

Book Understanding Persistence Through University Climate Assessment

Download or read book Understanding Persistence Through University Climate Assessment written by Maria J. De Los Rios and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was, first, to provide a portrait of first-year students' perceptions of the university climate at two Chilean universities located in Santiago Metropolitan area; and, second, to examine the relationship between these perceptions and students' plans to enroll at their institutions for a second year of studies. As little to none research on students' perceptions of the university climate in Chile has been conducted, this study presents an effort to start filling that gap in the Chilean higher education research. This work builds upon Hurtado et al.'s (2012) Multicontextual Model for Diverse Learning Environments (MMDLE), which is a multidimensional and multicontextual approach to analyzing college climate. Additionally, this research endeavor includes the adaptation, translation, and administration of the Diverse Learning Environments (DLE) survey assessment instrument based on the MMDLE framework. The survey was administered to first-year students at two Chilean universities, and it provides new data about students' perceptions of college climate in Chile. This study offers new insights into the relationship of first-year students' perceptions of university climate and first-to-second-year persistence in the Chilean context. Further, since the DLE measures were disaggregated by social identity groups, this study also offers a portrait of how students perceive university climate during their first year of studies depending on their sex and LGBTQ, indigenous, and social class identities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this 1994 classic work on student retention, Vincent Tinto synthesizes far-ranging research on student attrition and on actions institutions can and should take to reduce it. The key to effective retention, Tinto demonstrates, is in a strong commitment to quality education and the building of a strong sense of inclusive educational and social community on campus. He applies his theory of student departure to the experiences of minority, adult, and graduate students, and to the situation facing commuting institutions and two-year colleges. Especially critical to Tinto’s model is the central importance of the classroom experience and the role of multiple college communities.
