Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Interpretation of India's Religious History It seems almost and impertinence for one without and experience in India like Dr. Hume's to attempt even a brief introduction to these illuminating lectures on the religious history of India. Dr. Hume needs no outsiders commendation or correction; for he writes out of the treasures of long residence and devoted service in India, of painstaking study of its life and thought, and of sympathetic and reverent appreciation of its religious development. But one may well express his gratitude for the precise nature of the aim and spirit of these lectures, and for the detailed illustrations in which aim and spirit are indicated. For the distinguishing characteristic of the lectures is, that they are in earnest with Christ's conception of God as Father of all men, and strive to look at the complex religious phenomena of India in that light. Book The Religions of India Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Religions of India Classic Reprint written by Auguste Barth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A. Barth's The Religions of India is a survey of the popular religions of India. Originally written for inclusion in an encyclopedia, Barth later expanded the work to a standalone text, which is more suitable for a document of such depth. The author begins with an examination of the Vedic religions, commonly thought of as the precursor religions to Hinduism. Barth traces the spread of these religions through time and the evolution of ancient religions into more modern religions, proceeding to explore Brahmanism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Hinduism in great depth, highlighting the history and practices of each. Barth writes in a distinguished, authoritative tone. It is apparent that the origin of this writing was inclusion in an encyclopedia, as the text is heavy with facts and raw information. While there is some degree of exposition and argumentative analysis, the focus here is clearly on presenting the information. The Religions of India would make a great textbook. It is clear, concise, and contains a wealth of information. Amateur historians and readers of religious history will likely find this to be an interesting read, and it makes a valuable addition to the library of anybody interested in India's religions. Book The Religious Quest of India Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Religious Quest of India Classic Reprint written by J. N. Farquhar and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious Quest of India The writers of this series of volumes on the variant forms of religious life in India are governed in their work by two impelling motives. I. They endeavour to work in the sincere and sympathetic spirit of science. They desire to understand the perplexingly involved developments of thought and life in India and dispassionately to estimate their value. They recognize the futility of any such attempt to understand and evaluate, unless it is grounded in a thorough historical study of the phenomena investigated. In recognizing this fact they do no more than share what is common ground among all modern students of religion of any repute. But they also believe that it is necessary to set the practical side of each system in living relation to the beliefs and the literature, and that, in this regard, the close and direct contact which they have each had with Indian religious life ought to prove a source of valuable light. For, until a clear understanding has been gained of the practical influence exerted by the habits of worship, by the practice of the ascetic, devotional, or occult discipline, by the social organization and by the family system, the real impact of the faith upon the life of the individual and the community cannot be estimated; and, without the advantage of extended personal intercourse, a trustworthy account of the religious experience of a community can scarcely be achieved by even the most careful student. II. They seek to set each form of Indian religion by the side of Christianity in such a way that the relationship may stand out clear. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural Religion in India: The Rede Lecture Delivered in the Senate-House on June 17, 1891 I would ask you to remark that we have here at once, at the first word, a significant indication of the peculiar character and compo sition of Hinduism. This triple meaning or connotation of the term Hindu shews the com plexity of its origin, shews how Hinduism is twisted deep among the roots of Indian society, how it is a matter of birthright and inheritance; signifies that it means a civil community, quite as much as a religious association - that a man does not become a Hindu, but is born into Hinduism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient India: Its Language and Religions The little band of workers who are busy in the workshops of this department of science, have not been accustomed to have the eyes of other men turned upon their doings - their successes and failures. But, in spite, nay, rather in consequence of this, it is right that an attempt should be made to invite even the most disinterested to an inspection of these places of industry, and to point out, piece by piece, the work, or at least part of the work, that has been done there. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Religious Thought in Modern India Only twice in all the gospels are we told that the Son of Man was taken by surprise. And the two things that astonished Him were the faith of a heathen, and the want of faith of His own people in His own home. It was a' man of alien race and civilisation who opened up to the thought of the chosen people of God the riches of a faith which they had supposed peculiarly their own. We shall do well to remember this, for we live in an age When those whom we are accustomed to call heathen are often secret disciples of the Lord J esus. Download or read book The Stolen God and Other Experiences of Indian Palace Life Classic Reprint written by Nina Ottmann and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-05 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Stolen God and Other Experiences of Indian Palace Life In my study of certain of the customs described in this little book I have been surprised to find how they vary in different areas, though the essen tials of belief are the same. Each caste seems to give its own interpretation to the ritual of things, though it maintains the idea intact and of course local conditions do not permit of uniformity in external ceremonies all over India. For instance, in regard to the ceremonial purification recorded in Chapter XIII., I asked three Brahmin women to tell me their custom in this ceremony. All maintained the necessity for the purification, but one stated that in her caste the use of one hundred and eight balls of saffron in the bath - the saffron being rubbed on like soap - was prescribed for the ceremony; the other two had varied interpreta tions, and none of these agreed with the details of the rite as performed by the Rani. Diversity in the carrying out of any religious idea is as com mon in the East as denominationalism is in the West.
