The event was organized by the IFIP Working Group 5.8 on Enterprise Interoperability in co-operation with INTEROP-VLab and PGSO (Pole Grand Sud Ouest) from INTEROP-Vlab. The theme for IWEI 2015 was “From Enterprise Interoperability Modelling and Analysis to Enterprise Interoperability Engineering.” The nine full, four short, and two industrial papers presented in this volume were carefully selected from 20 submissions. The selection was based on a thorough review process, in which each paper was reviewed by at least three experts in the field. The papers are representative of the current research activities in the area of enterprise interoperability. They cover a wide spectrum of enterprise interoperability issues, including foundational theories, frameworks, architectures, methods and guidelines, and applications and case studies.

Book excerpt: Level of Information System Interoperability (LISI) is a maturity model and interactive process for assessing and improving interoperability. The heart of the LISI concept is the formulation of a system "profile" which was created through the web- based LISI tool, Inspector 1.0. LISI considers five increasing levels of sophistication with respect to exchanging and sharing information and services. Each higher level represents a demonstrable increase in capabilities over the previous level of system-to- system interaction. The increase is expressed in terms of four attributes: Procedures, Applications, Infrastructure and Data. LISI Inspector leverages the data captured in the Inspector Survey to generate four primary sets of assessment products to be as LISI management tool: Interoperability Profiles , Interoperability Assessment Matrices, Interoperability, Comparison Tables, and Interoperability, System Interface Description. A principal finding of this research is that LISI has potential to improve DOD C4I systems interoperability but the current LISI tool has to be refined. Also, LISI must continue to evolve and adopt the dynamic nature of military operations, system acquisition, and technology improvements so LISI can be useful in contributing to the improvement of DOD C4I systems' interoperability and to achieve the Information Superiority envisioned by Joint Vision 2010.

This transition requires transformation in warfighting and the way we organize to support the warfighter. Although the end-state of transformation cannot be fully defined in advance, we do know some of the necessary prerequisites for transformation. In particular, we know that early transformation requires exploiting information technology to reform defense business practices and to create new combinations of capabilities, operating concepts, organizational relationships and training regimes. Successful transformation of U.S. military forces and Department of Defense (DoD) processes requires a strategy with clear objectives. Effective implementation of the strategy requires commitment and attention from the Department's senior leadership and clearly assigned roles and responsibilities. This document communicates the Department's strategy for transformation and assigns senior leader roles and responsibilities to ensure implementation of the strategy. Senior leadership commitment to transformation will mobilize the rest of the Department and stimulate the bottom-up innovation required for successful transformation. Effective implementation of the transformation strategy is an essential prerequisite for strategic management of the Defense program. It will allow the Department to define transformation investments that address future risk with enough specificity that they can be balanced against the other three primary risk areas identified in the Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR): force management, operational, and institutional risk.

Recent military experiences with AVs have consistently demonstrated their value in a wide range of missions, and anticipated developments of AVs hold promise for increasingly significant roles in future naval operations. Advances in AV capabilities are enabled (and limited) by progress in the technologies of computing and robotics, navigation, communications and networking, power sources and propulsion, and materials. Autonomous Vehicles in Support of Naval Operations is a forward-looking discussion of the naval operational environment and vision for the Navy and Marine Corps and of naval mission needs and potential applications and limitations of AVs. This report considers the potential of AVs for naval operations, operational needs and technology issues, and opportunities for improved operations.

Notably, the US Department of Defense is mandating that all of its agencies and contractors assume a defining presence on the Net-centric Global Information Grid. This book provides the first practical approach to data engineering and modeling, which supports interoperabililty with consumers of the data in a service- oriented architectures (SOAs). Although XML (eXtensible Modeling Language) is the lingua franca for such interoperability, it is not sufficient on its own. The approach in this book addresses critical objectives such as creating a single representation for multiple applications, designing models capable of supporting dynamic processes, and harmonizing legacy data models for web-based co-existence. The approach is based on the System Entity Structure (SES) which is a well-defined structure, methodology, and practical tool with all of the functionality of UML (Unified Modeling Language) and few of the drawbacks. The SES originated in the formal representation of hierarchical simulation models. So it provides an axiomatic formalism that enables automating the development of XML dtds and schemas, composition and decomposition of large data models, and analysis of commonality among structures. Zeigler and Hammond include a range of features to benefit their readers. Natural language, graphical and XML forms of SES specification are employed to allow mapping of legacy meta-data.
