Book Gas Turbine Regenerators

Download or read book Gas Turbine Regenerators written by Douglas Beck and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-07-11 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regenerative gas turbines are attractive alternatives to diesel engines and spark ignition engines for automobiles and to diesel engines and combined-cycle en gines for power generation. Theory indicates regenerative gas turbines should achieve higher thermal efficiencies than those of diesel engines and combined cycle engines. Further, regenerative gas turbines are potentially lower in cost, require less maintenance, require less space, and pollute less than competitive systems. Regenerators can be used for exhaust-gas heat exchange or for intercooling in gas-turbine systems. As an exhaust-gas heat exchanger, a regenerator recovers heat from the exhaust and uses it to preheat the compressed air before the compressed air enters the combustor. Preheating of the compressed air permits a small heat input to the combustor for a given power output of the engine. As an intercooler, a regenerator cools the gas between compressor stages. Less work is required to compress cool gas than is required to compress warm gas. Therefore, a regenerator intercooler can reduce the required work input to the compressor. Thus, regenerators can be used to increase the thermal efficiencies and power outputs of gas turbines. the backbones of high-performance re High-performance regenerators are generative gas turbines. In the past, lack of understanding of regenerator per formance has led to sub-optimal engine designs. Now this book gives com prehensive regenerator information. With this book, the designer can design regenerators that will yield gas turbines with maximum thermal efficiencies.

Book excerpt: The second edition of a comprehensive textbook that introduces turbomachinery and gas turbines through design methods and examples. This comprehensive textbook is unique in its design-focused approach to turbomachinery and gas turbines. It offers students and practicing engineers methods for configuring these machines to perform with the highest possible efficiency. Examples and problems are based on the actual design of turbomachinery and turbines. After an introductory chapter that outlines the goals of the book and provides definitions of terms and parts, the book offers a brief review of the basic principles of thermodynamics and efficiency definitions. The rest of the book is devoted to the analysis and design of real turbomachinery configurations and gas turbines, based on a consistent application of thermodynamic theory and a more empirical treatment of fluid dynamics that relies on the extensive use of design charts. Topics include turbine power cycles, diffusion and diffusers, the analysis and design of three-dimensional free-stream flow, and combustion systems and combustion calculations. The second edition updates every chapter, adding material on subjects that include flow correlations, energy transfer in turbomachines, and three-dimensional design. A solutions manual is available for instructors. This new MIT Press edition makes a popular text available again, with corrections and some updates, to a wide audience of students, professors, and professionals.

Book Preliminary Mechanical Redesign of an Existing Gas Turbine Engine to Incorporate a High Efficiency Low Pressure Ratio Highly Regenerative Cycle for Marine Applications

Download or read book Preliminary Mechanical Redesign of an Existing Gas Turbine Engine to Incorporate a High Efficiency Low Pressure Ratio Highly Regenerative Cycle for Marine Applications written by Patrick Kevin Poole and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The low-pressure-ratio, highly-regenerative, gas-turbine engine has been proposed as an efficient alternative to other current small-scale marine propulsion systems. This thesis provides a preliminary mechanical redesign of an existing gas-turbine engine to lower the compressor pressure ratio and incorporate a regenerator. One basic design is presented with several alternative turbine modifications. The redesign includes elimination of the second stage of the original two-stage centrifugal compressor, increasing the liner flow area of the existing annular combustor, elimination of the first stage of the three-stage axial turbine, reblading the last two turbine stages, sizing an appropriate regenerator, and designing annular inlet and outlet scrolls to direct gas flow to the regenerator. Due to the simplicity of the original engine and its operating environment (high-altitude turboprop), modification to a regenerative system for marine use appears feasible and attractive. The redesigned engine has a maximum design-point thermal efficiency of 49% with a reduction in power output from the original engine of only 12.5%. The extend of the modifications to the original engine could be reduced somewhat to enhance economic attractiveness at the expense of reduced efficiency or power output.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the only texts to focus on turbomachinery and gas turbines from the 'design' point of view, this volume reviews the necessary thermodynamics, gives extensive design data, provides engine and component illustrations (with comments on good and less-than-good design features), and contains many worked examples - allowing students to produce preliminary designs that can be made and run quickly - as early as Ch. 5. More comprehensive than similar texts, it features a simplified - and more accurate thermodynamic treatment that eliminates the confusing use of 'gamma' and specific heat together, and provides individual full-chapter coverage of axial-flow turbines and compressors and radial-flow versions of the same. *Contains a Brief History of Turbomachinery. *Features a design perspective throughout - and enables students to develop a preliminary design after Ch. 5. *Offers a unified treatment of energy transfer and vector diagrams - focusing on principles that can be applied easily to compressors, pumps, turbines - radial and axial. *Includes specialized chapters that give far more design data than other similar texts - allowing students to produce a design that can be made and r

This book was released on 2018-08-20 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel semi-closed cycle gas turbine engine was demonstrated and was found to meet the program goals. The proof-of-principle test of the High Pressure Regenerative Turbine Engine produced data that agreed well with models, enabling more confidence in designing future prototypes based on this concept. Emission levels were significantly reduced as predicted as a natural attribute of this power cycle. Engine testing over a portion of the operating range allowed verification of predicted power increases compared to the baseline. Lear, W. E. and Laganelli, A. Book Digital Simulation of Gas Turbine Steady state and Transient Performance for Current and Advanced Marine Propulsion Systems

Download or read book Digital Simulation of Gas Turbine Steady state and Transient Performance for Current and Advanced Marine Propulsion Systems written by Bhavik Mody and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research study focuses on the idea of simulation of an Integrated FullElectric Propulsion System. The simulation required the development of a gasturbine performance model that could predict the dynamic behaviour of theengine in response to a fluctuation of electrical load. For this purposes it wasnecessary to evaluate the thermodynamic working process of the gas turbineand a computer code was created. A design point model written in FORTRAN77 had been transformed to predict the steady state and transientperformance of a two-shaft gas turbine and single shaft gas turbine. Themodels were based on the thermodynamic law of conservation of mass. Forthe model of the two-shaft gas turbine controls system equations had beenderived from off-design analysis and implemented as handles for operation. Both the models were then transformed to a direct link library for theSIMULINK? package. They were further implemented with an electricalnetwork model to form a high-fidelity prime mover-electrical networkpropulsiondrive interface with which a complete systems analysis was doneto understand the response of the three systems in parallel. In a second part heat exchanger modelling had to be performed so as tocreate a gas turbine model of an intercooled-recuperated engine. This wasdone for the steady state behaviour and sizing problem of heat exchangers. The models were run parallel to the steady state code as a validationexercise. Due to time and project restraints the complete incorporation of themodels with the gas turbine code was not performed and only a uni-directionalsystem of heat exchanger was created. Over all the period of researchparametric studies had been done for comparison of various aspects ofperformance. The high fidelity model of the prime mover-electrical network highlighted thereasons for studying the impact of the propulsion drive and electrical networkload dynamics on the operation of the prime movers and vice versa. The loss-of-propulsion-load scenario case study has demonstrated the capabilities ofthe integrated model, showing clear interactions between the individualsubsystems. The interface can now be used to analyse novel types of gasturbine engines in the future. The method adopted to simulate transientperformance of gas turbines was useful in understanding the impact of bleedair on current and novel cycles. Finally the task of heat exchanger simulationemphasized the need to create better and accurate models to understand theimpact of its behaviour on the gas turbine.
