Book Safety Assessment Methodologies for Near Surface Disposal Facilities Review and enhancement of safety assessment approaches and tools

Download or read book Safety Assessment Methodologies for Near Surface Disposal Facilities Review and enhancement of safety assessment approaches and tools written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ISAM project involved the review and enhancement of post-closure safety assessment methodologies and tools for both existing and proposed near surface radioactive waste disposal facilities. The main objectives of the project were to: (a) provide a critical evaluation of the approaches and tools used in the post-closure safety assessment of proposed and existing near surface radioactive waste disposal facilities; (b) enhance the approaches and tools used; (c) build confidence in the approaches and tools used. In order to help achieve these objectives, the ISAM project paid particular attention to discussing, agreeing and setting down a safety assessment methodology. The ISAM project primarily focused on developing a consensus on the methodological aspects of safety assessment, but also gave considerable attention to illustrating the application of the methodology to three main types of disposal facilities (vault, RADON and borehole type disposal facilities).--Publisher description.

Book Performance Assessments for Near surface Low level Radioactive Waste Disposal Facilities

Download or read book Performance Assessments for Near surface Low level Radioactive Waste Disposal Facilities written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of a performance assessment for a low-level radioactive waste (LLW) disposal facility is to determine the proposed facility's projected compliance with regulatory limits in terms of doses to the general public and to protect inadvertent intruders. A set of exposure scenarios must be evaluated for each of the various institutional phases of the facility; a quantitative evaluation must be performed for the most probable scenarios. Evaluation of the final conceptual model of the facility and site should involve the use of appropriate computer code and site-specific data. Code selection for a performance assessment should be based on code capabilities as well as on site-specific needs and characteristics. Generally, a single code will not be capable of simulating all relevant scenarios. A review of performance assessments for confirmation of regulatory compliance will be conducted by the NRC or the appropriate Agreement State regulatory agency. Performance assessment codes are tools for evaluating a proposed LLW disposal facility's regulatory compliance. This evaluation should objectively assess the physical properties of the facility and its environment. Calculations in support of this evaluation must be conservative yet realistic and they must also be technically defensible and supported by adequate data.

Book Near Surface Disposal Facilities for Radioactive Waste

Download or read book Near Surface Disposal Facilities for Radioactive Waste written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Safety Guide provides recommendations on how to meet safety requirements on the disposal of radioactive waste. It is concerned with the disposal of solid radioactive waste by emplacement in designated facilities at or near the land surface. The Safety Guide provides guidance on the development, operation and closure of, and on the regulatory control of, near surface disposal facilities, which are suitable for the disposal of very low level waste and low level waste. The Safety Guide provides guidance on a range of disposal methods, including the emplacement of solid radioactive waste in earthen trenches, in above ground engineered structures, in engineered structures just below the ground surface and in rock caverns, silos and tunnels excavated at depths of up to a few tens of metres underground. It is intended for use primarily by those involved with policy development for, with the regulatory control of, and with the development and operation of near surface disposal facilities.
