Book An Integrated Model for Whether Who When and How Much in Internet Auctions

Download or read book An Integrated Model for Whether Who When and How Much in Internet Auctions written by Young-Hoon Park and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We develop a general parametric modeling framework for bidding behavior in Internet auctions. Toward this end, we incorporate and model simultaneously four key components of the bidding process under our integrated framework: Whether an auction will have a bid at all, (if so) who has bid, when they have bid, and how much they have bid over the entire sequence of bids in an auction. This integrated framework is based on a single latent time-varying construct of consumer willingness to bid (WTB), which bidders have and update for a particular auction item over the course of the auction duration. Our modeling approach is also based on a simple yet very general bidding premise: The observed bidder's latent WTB at a specific bid is greater than the outstanding bid; yet, WTB is unconstrained for all other potential bidders. In this manner, we impose no structural assumption on bidder rationality or equilibrium behavior; instead, deriving our model using a probabilistic modeling paradigm. We describe in detail the advantages that our reducted-form approach allows us, and the limitations such an approach also entails. Using a database of notebook auctions from one of the largest Internet auction sites in Korea, we demonstrate that this general (yet parsimonious) model captures the key behavioral aspects of bidding behavior. Furthermore, substantively, through a data-windowing procedure to assess the set of potential bidders for a given auctioned item, we provide a valuable tool for managers at auction sites to conduct their customer relationship management efforts which require them to evaluate the goodness (whether) of the listed auction items and the goodness (who, when, and how much to bid) of the potential bidders in their Internet auctions.

Book Modeling Online Auctions

Download or read book Modeling Online Auctions written by Wolfgang Jank and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore cutting-edge statistical methodologies for collecting, analyzing, and modeling online auction data Online auctions are an increasingly important marketplace, as the new mechanisms and formats underlying these auctions have enabled the capturing and recording of large amounts of bidding data that are used to make important business decisions. As a result, new statistical ideas and innovation are needed to understand bidders, sellers, and prices. Combining methodologies from the fields of statistics, data mining, information systems, and economics, Modeling Online Auctions introduces a new approach to identifying obstacles and asking new questions using online auction data. The authors draw upon their extensive experience to introduce the latest methods for extracting new knowledge from online auction data. Rather than approach the topic from the traditional game-theoretic perspective, the book treats the online auction mechanism as a data generator, outlining methods to collect, explore, model, and forecast data. Topics covered include: Data collection methods for online auctions and related issues that arise in drawing data samples from a Web site Models for bidder and bid arrivals, treating the different approaches for exploring bidder-seller networks Data exploration, such as integration of time series and cross-sectional information; curve clustering; semi-continuous data structures; and data hierarchies The use of functional regression as well as functional differential equation models, spatial models, and stochastic models for capturing relationships in auction data Specialized methods and models for forecasting auction prices and their applications in automated bidding decision rule systems Throughout the book, R and MATLAB software are used for illustrating the discussed techniques. In addition, a related Web site features many of the book's datasets and R and MATLAB code that allow readers to replicate the analyses and learn new methods to apply to their own research. Modeling Online Auctions is a valuable book for graduate-level courses on data mining and applied regression analysis. It is also a one-of-a-kind reference for researchers in the fields of statistics, information systems, business, and marketing who work with electronic data and are looking for new approaches for understanding online auctions and processes. Download or read book On extreme value statistics written by Chen Zhou and published by Rozenberg Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 18th century, statisticians sometimes worked as consultants to gamblers. In order to answer questions like "If a fair coin is flipped 100 times, what is the probability of getting 60 or more heads?", Abraham de Moivre discovered the so-called "normal curve". Independently, Pierre-Simon Laplace derived the central limit theorem, where the normal distribution acts as the limit for the distribution of the sample mean. Nowadays, statisticians sometimes work as consultants for economists, to whom the normal distribution is far from a satisfactory model. For example, one may need to model large-impact financial events in order to to answer questions like "What is the probability of getting into a crisis period similar to the credit squeeze in 2007 in the coming 10 years?". At first glance, estimating the chances of events that rarely happen or even have never happened before sounds like a "mission impossible". The development of Extreme Value Theory (EVT) shows that it is in fact possible to achieve this goal. Different from the central limit theorem, Extreme Value Theory starts from the limit distribution of the sample maximum. Initiated by M. Frechet, R. Fisher and R. von Mises, the limit theory completed by B. Gnedenko, gave the fundamental assumption in EVT, the "extreme value condition". Statistically, the extreme value condition provides a semi-parametric model for the tails of distribution functions. Therefore it can be applied to evaluate the rare events. On the other hand, since the assumption is rather general and natural, the semi-parametric model can have extensive applications in numerous felds.

Book E Commerce and Web Technologies

Download or read book E Commerce and Web Technologies written by Giuseppe Psaila and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-08-25 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Conference on E-commerce and Web Technologies (EC-Web) is a mature and well-established forum for researchers working in the area of electronic commerce and web technologies. These are the proceedings of the ninth conference in the series, which, like previous EC-Web conferences, was co-located with DEXA, the International Conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications, which, this year, took place in Turin, Italy. One key feature of EC-Web is its two-fold nature: it brings together both papers proposing technological solutions for e-commerce and the World Wide Web, and papers concerning the management of e-commerce, such as web marketing, the impact of e-commerce on business processes and organizations, the analysis of case studies, as well as social aspects of e-commerce (to understand the impact of e-commerce solutions on day-to-day life and the new opportunities that these behaviors open). The technical program included 12 reviewed papers and two invited papers. Each paper was reviewed by five reviewers, in order to select only the best quality papers. The program included five sessions: “Security in E-Commerce” (with two papers), “Social Aspects of E-Commerce” (with two papers), “Business Process and EC Inf- structures” (with three papers), “Recommender Systems and E-Negotiations” (with four papers) and “Web Marketing and User Profiling” (with three papers). We found the program interesting and we hope participants and readers feel the same. Furthermore, we hope the attendees enjoyed the conference and Turin. June 2008 Giuseppe Psaila Roland R. Wagner
