Book Paleopalynology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alfred Traverse
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2007-05-21
  • ISBN : 1402056109
  • Pages : 816 pages

Download or read book Paleopalynology written by Alfred Traverse and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-21 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides complete coverage of all aspects of the study of all fossil palynomorphs yet studied. It is a profusely illustrated treatment. The book serves both as a student text and general reference work. Palynomorphs yield information about age, geological and biological environment, climate during deposition, and other significant factors about the enclosing rocks. Extant spores and pollen are treated first, preparing the student for more difficult work with fossil sporomorphs and other kinds of palynomorphs. An appendix describes laboratory methods. The glossary, bibliographies and index are useful tools for study of the literature.

Book Depositional Systems

Download or read book Depositional Systems written by Richard A. Davis (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Offering a solid introduction to the principles and applications of sedimentology and stratigraphy, author Richard A. Davis Jr. emphasizes the integration of these two areas and covers both modern and ancient depositional environments using modern examples and excellent illustrations. The Second Edition presents updated technical information, and offers a major reorganization of chapters to promote greater clarity and to place greater emphasis on more current topics. Additional content highlights: provides new approaches to basic analysis, including sequence stratigraphy; integrates genetically related depositional environments that share a common thread in concurrent chapters; discusses topics such as sedimentary processes and structures, the desert system, the fluvial system, the delta system, the barrier island system, reefs and the carbonate platform system, the deep ocean system, and much more." --

Book Feldspars and Feldspathoids

    Book Details:
  • Author : W.L. Brown
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-04-17
  • ISBN : 9401569290
  • Pages : 551 pages

Download or read book Feldspars and Feldspathoids written by W.L. Brown and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The feldspars form the most abundant group of minerals in the crust of the Earth and Moon and also occur in many meteo rites. They playa fundamental role in all rock-forming processes at shallow depths, but are rare or absent from the upper mantle. Their detailed study is thus essential for the understan ding of such varied processes as magma genesis and differentia tion, metamorphism, al teration, erosion and sedimentation. This interest is show by the fact that two previous NATO Advanced Study Institutes on feldspars were held in Oslo in 1962 and in Manchester in 1972. The feldspars are particularly sui table for detailed studies, as they have very simple chemistry and develop some of the most complex microstructures known. The microstructures are often slow to form but are easily preserved, so that they are potentially extremely informative about the geological history of the rocks in which they occur. Furthermore, their study involves physical and chemical methods of increasing sophistication so that the results obtained are not always immediately understandable to research workers outside the field of modern mineralogy. Progress in knowledge about feldspars is probably slower in penetrating the fields of petrology and geochemistry than that on other mineral groups. For these reasons among others, i~ was particularly appropriate to hold a third NATO ASI on feldspars approximately ten years after the last one.

Book Geomorphology and Quarternary sic Geologic History of the Lower Mississippi Valley

Download or read book Geomorphology and Quarternary sic Geologic History of the Lower Mississippi Valley written by Roger T. Saucier and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Abstract: this comprehensive, two-volume synthesis, the first in 50 years, is aimed at a multidisciplinary audience concerned with multiple aspects of water resources engineering and natural and cultural resources management. It presents at a scale of 1:250,000 the distribution of environments of deposition as compiled from more than 30 years of detailed geologic mapping, as well as a new interpretation and delineation of the eroded suballuvial surface. A detailed interpretation of the evolution of the alluvial valley and deltaic plain is presented and illustrated by a series of 13 paleogeographic reconstructions. The chronology of valley events is based on stratigraphic relationships and radiometric age determinations but relies heavily on archeological evidence. The geologic processes and controls that affect the entire region include continental glaciations, climate, sea level variations, tectonics and diapirism, and subsidence. Both erosional and depositional landscapes are represented, and the lithology, soils, and geotechnical properties of the latter are presented in narrative and tabular form for the principal fluvial, lacustrine, eclian, deltaic, and deltaic-marine environments. Discussions of neotectonics in the region focus on the New Madrid Seismic Zone, and a section of the synthesis addresses special engineering considerations such as groundwater occurrence, mass movements, river meandering, and long-term stability."--Publisher's website.
