Book Myth Christianity

Download or read book Myth Christianity written by Karl Jaspers and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two of the most brilliant German thinkers of the twentieth century were Karl Jaspers and Rudolf Bultmann. Jaspers, the philosopher, and Bultmann, the theologian, were both influenced by the philosophy of Martin Heidegger and the rise of the existentialist movement. Late in their careers they interacted on the subject of Bultmann's attempt to divest Christianity of its mythical components and make sense of it in more modern terms. This work is a compilation of articles by Jaspers and Bultmann that formed a running debate originally published in various scholarly journals. The first half of the book is Jaspers' lengthy and critical analysis of Bultmann's interpretation of Christianity, in which Jaspers essentially rejects the premise that Christianity or any other religion can or should be understood without its mythical framework. Jaspers charges that Bultmann has radically misunderstood the nature of myth and that myth is an irreplaceable form of symbolic communication. In the second part, Bultmann defends his approach, suggesting that Jaspers has not really understood his intent or meaning. Contemporary people today, schooled in the scientific tradition, are likely to reject the biblical texts because of their miraculous claims and supernatural content. Bultmann insists that the scholarly, scientific study of the Bible is a legitimate way to reveal its true message, apart from all the supernatural trappings. Finally, in response, Jaspers accepts some of Bultmann's clarifications but takes him to task on the subject of justification by faith, which he feels Bultmann defines too narrowly and too exclusively. This stimulating work by two penetrating minds will give anyone interested in perennial philosophical and theological questions much to ponder.

Book A Brief Inquiry Into the Meaning of Sin and Faith

Download or read book A Brief Inquiry Into the Meaning of Sin and Faith written by John Rawls and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-03-31 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Rawls never published anything about his own religious beliefs, but after his death two texts were discovered which shed extraordinary light on the subject. A Brief Inquiry into the Meaning of Sin and Faith is Rawls’s undergraduate senior thesis, submitted in December 1942, just before he entered the army. At that time Rawls was deeply religious; the thesis is a significant work of theological ethics, of interest both in itself and because of its relation to his mature writings. “On My Religion,” a short statement drafted in 1997, describes the history of his religious beliefs and attitudes toward religion, including his abandonment of orthodoxy during World War II. The present volume includes these two texts, together with an Introduction by Joshua Cohen and Thomas Nagel, which discusses their relation to Rawls’s published work, and an essay by Robert Merrihew Adams, which places the thesis in its theological context. The texts display the profound engagement with religion that forms the background of Rawls’s later views on the importance of separating religion and politics. Moreover, the moral and social convictions that the thesis expresses in religious form are related in illuminating ways to the central ideas of Rawls’s later writings. His notions of sin, faith, and community are simultaneously moral and theological, and prefigure the moral outlook found in Theory of Justice.

Book Religious Philosophy as Multidisciplinary Comparative Inquiry

Download or read book Religious Philosophy as Multidisciplinary Comparative Inquiry written by Wesley J. Wildman and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2010-11-05 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can philosophy contribute to the study of religion? This book argues that the study of religion needs philosophy in the form of multidisciplinary comparative inquiry. Contradicting the current tendency to regard philosophical reflection and the academic study of religion as independent endeavors best kept apart, Wesley J. Wildman brings them together, offering a broader vision than that of traditional "philosophy of religion" and surmounting many of its difficulties. His newer conception of "religious philosophy" is well suited to the modern, multicultural, secular university. Through multidisciplinary comparative inquiry, religious philosophy allows for a variety of approaches—from historical and analytical work to evocative description and theoretical evaluation of truth claims—and both secular and religious thinkers participate. The tasks and varieties of religious philosophy as they arc across the world's religions and philosophies are discussed along with religious philosophy's modern and postmodern contexts. Wildman's thoughtful and thought-provoking book will be essential reading for all those concerned with the study of religion, present and future.

Book A Philosophical Theology of the Old Testament

Download or read book A Philosophical Theology of the Old Testament written by Jaco Gericke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-01-08 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are we able to identify and compare the philosophical perspectives and questions that must be postulated as having been somehow present in the language, ideas and worldviews of the Biblical authors? This book sets out an approach to something that has been generally considered impossible: a philosophical theology of the Old Testament. It demonstrates and addresses the neglect of a descriptive and comparative philosophical clarification of concepts in Old Testament theology, and in so doing treads new ground in Biblical studies and philosophical theology. Recognizing the obvious problems with, and objections to, any form of interdisciplinary research combining philosophical and Biblical theology, this study presents itself as introductory and experimental in nature. The methodology opted for is limited to a philosophical clarification of concepts already found in Old Testament theology, while the findings are presented via the popular thematic approach found in analytic philosophical theologies; with no attempted justification or critique of the textual contents under investigation. These approaches are combined by primarily looking at the nature of Yahweh in the Old Testament. This book offers a new vision of Biblical and philosophical theology that brings them closer together in order that we might understand both more broadly and deeply. As such, it will be vital reading for scholars of Theology, Biblical Studies and Philosophy.

Book The Philosophy of Jesus

Download or read book The Philosophy of Jesus written by Ph. D. Garth V. Greene and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WHAT IS PHILOSOPHY? Philosophy over the years has been considered by the average college student as a part of education reserved for someone doing a doctoral dissertation, and therefore of limits to them. Whether this has been a reasonable position to take seems, on the surface, to be a good question to pursue. For in many high schools philosophy is not taught and so it remains a dark area of the educational field, which only the brave dare to trod. Nevertheless, my view of philosophy, when summed up, is that it is merely a well thought out position coined in several words and used to state what one believes in, is prepared to live by, does live by, will die for, and can defend successfully at any intellectual level. The experts however, offer the following: Norman L Geisler and Paul D. Feinberg1 in their text - introduction to philosophy, says; "The logical place to begin is with a definition of this discipline." However, even the coming up with a definition proves to be a complex philosophical question. Some experts regard philosophy as the 'Uno Numero' of all the sciences while others still don't accept it as a science. Some contend that philosophy reveals information, upon inquiry, of those things that comprise the ultimate things of the world, while others don't even regard it as such a serious discipline of inquiry. Others see it as an activity of rationality with its central theme being to critically evaluate evidence of a phenomena but to this argument, some hold that reason is not essential or indeed there is no pursuit to an all convincing theme or argument in philosophy.
