An inquiry into the nature and causes of the wealth of nations Adam Smith iii PREFACE TO THIS EDITION. "The book," says a masterly writer*, " which has changed the face of a science, even when not superseded in its doctrines, is seldom suitable to didactic purposes. It is adapted to the state of mind, not of those who are ignorant of every doctrine, but of those who are instructed in an erroneous doctrine. So far as it is taken up directly in combating the errors which prevailed before it was written, the more completely it has done its work, the more certain it is of becoming superfluous, not to say unintelligible, without a commentary." These remarks are not less applicable to Adam Smith's Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations, than to Locke's Essay on the Human Understanding. In political economy, the former work is the book which has changed the face of a science; and no small portion of it is taken up * London Review, art. State of Philosophy in England.--A. r. in directly combating the errors which prevailed before it was written. At this time, an argument, however powerful and complete, against the Mercantile and Agricultural Systems of the last century, would be wholly superfluous; and for this reason: that those Theories have been demolished by Adam Smith's Inquiry. So completely has that book done its work, that the controversy in which the author engaged, has lost all interest, and is nearly forgotten. Who now cares to be told, that money is not wealth; that land is not the only source of wealth; or that the cause and measure of national wealth is not the excess of exports over imports? When doctrines become obsolete, the controversial matter of the book which has refuted them

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Counter to the popular impression that Adam Smith was a champion of selfishness and greed, Jerry Muller shows that the Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations maintained that markets served to promote the well-being of the populace and that government must intervene to counteract the negative effects of the pursuit of self-interest. Smith's analysis went beyond economics to embrace a larger "civilizing project" designed to create a more decent society.

Book An Inquiry Into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations the Original Classic Edition

This book was released on 2012-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addressing the nature and causes of the wealth of nations, Adam Smith made one of the most potent contributions to subsequent ideological history. In the West since the early-19th century he has been the patron saint of homo economicus. More recently, successive British governments have invoked his policy recommendations of free trade and laissez-faire to aid their extension of privatization and market effectiveness into areas such as health and education. Smith, however, not only viewed merchants and manufacturers with deep suspicion, but also tempered his celebration of a self-regulating market with a darker vision of the dehumanizing potential of a profit-orientated society. He did not write an economics textbook, however, but rather a narrative about the struggle for individual liberty and general prosperity in history. This selected edition includes sections from all five books of the Wealth of Nations. It also provides full notes and a commentary that places Smiths work within a rich interdisciplinary environment.

Book excerpt: A Bible for Students of Economics STUDENT EDITION - COMPLETE An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith COMPLETE EDITION CLASSICAL ECONOMICS Top 100 Books - Economics Adam Smith's masterpiece, first published in 1776, is the foundation of modern economic thought and remains the single most important account of the rise of, and the principles behind, modern capitalism. Written in clear and incisive prose, The Wealth of Nations articulates the concepts indispensable to an understanding of contemporary society. An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations, generally referred to by its shortened title The Wealth of Nations, is the magnum opus of the Scottish economist and moral philosopher Adam Smith. First published in 1776, the book offers one of the world's first collected descriptions of what builds nations' wealth and is today a fundamental work in classical economics. By reflecting upon the economics at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the book touches upon such broad topics as the division of labor, productivity, and free markets. The Wealth of Nations was published 9 March 1776, during the Scottish Enlightenment and the Scottish Agricultural Revolution.[1] It influenced a number of authors and economists, as well as governments and organizations. For example, Alexander Hamilton was influenced in part by The Wealth of Nations to write his Report on Manufactures, in which he argued against many of Smith's policies. Interestingly, Hamilton based much of this report on the ideas of Jean-Baptiste Colbert, and it was, in part, Colbert's ideas that Smith responded to with The Wealth of Nations. Many other authors were influenced by the book and used it as a starting point in their own work, including Jean-Baptiste Say, David Ricardo, Thomas Malthus and, later, Ludwig von Mises. The Russian national poet Aleksandr Pushkin refers to The Wealth of Nations in his 1833 verse-novel Eugene Onegin. The Wealth of Nations was the product of seventeen years of notes, and observation of conversation among economists of the time concerning economic and societal conditions during the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, and took Smith ten years to produce. The result, An Inquiry to the Wealth of Nations, was a treatise which sought to offer a practical application for reformed economic theory to replace the mercantilist and physiocratic economic theories that were becoming less relevant in the time of industrial progress and innovation. It provided the foundation for new economists, politicians, mathematicians, biologists, and thinkers of all fields to build upon. Irrespective of historical influence, The Wealth of Nations represented a clear shift in the field of economics, comparable to Sir Isaac Newton's Principia Mathematica for physics, Antoine Lavoisier's Traité Élémentaire de Chimie for chemistry, or Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species for biology.
