This book was released on 2017-07-17 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Inquiry Into the Foundation, Evidences, and Truths of Religion, Vol. 2 of 2 So important are the facts related in those Jewish and Christian Scriptures, and so interesting the doc trines taught in them, that far more attention has been bestowed upon them, than upon any other ancient Writings, for the purpose of preserving their purity, and transmitting them uncorrupted, and of ascertaining and proving the justice of the claim of the doctrines they contain to a divine origin. The attention thus bestowed on them, both by those who receive them as oracles of truth, and by those who have wished to invalidate their authority, has contributed greatly to the means of ascertaining the degree of credit, to which they are entitled. If then the marks, which might be expected to attend a revelation from God, shall be found actually to accompany that, which is the subject of our inquiry, - upona fair investigation of all the circumstances, which have accompanied its origin, its introduction into the world, its progress and success, the truths it reveals, the duties it inculcates, and the characters and examples of those, by whom it was first propagated, - its authority will be fairly established, and no good reason can be assigned, why it should not be received. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundations of Faith: Being a Consideration of the Grounds of Religious Belief, and Especially of the Evidences of Divine Revelation in the Religion of the Bible One who ascends a mountain sees the landscape below changing on his view from every new point of observation. The general features of forest and field, river and plain, are much the same, but the outlines of the picture are changed. The horizon falls further away; new mountains show their misty tops, and new realms come faintly into View. Meantime objects near at hand appear to change in, relative importance; some that were conspicuous sink out of sight, and others, which they for a time concealed, stand out in bold pro file. Increasing knowledge furnishes to each succeeding generation a new view point from which to contem plate religion, natural or revealed. In this change of view we still recognize the old staple supports of faith - arguments which will forever stand firm from age to age; but new truths also come into view, and the old arguments give new suggestions. They change in their relative value when viewed through a changed perspective. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This, how ever, is not a confideration on which Ido not lay fo much firefs as to think it proper to introduce it into thefe Institutes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourses on the Principles and Evidences of Natural Religion and the Christian Revelation, Vol. 1: And on Some Proper Practical Subjects Miracles made ufe of in the introduc tion of aparticular revelation, are in fome meafure fimilar to the dwine operations in the formation of the world and of man kind, and may confpire to the fame end. But the univerfal and perpetual ufe of them would in effeét fubvert or change the plan of nature, and confequently could not confpire to the fame end. Hence arifes a firong prelumption, that the miracles reported in various legends, as wrought every where and for trivial purpofes, are Counterfeits. But to determine from hence, as an ingenious writer hath done, That no miracles were ever wrought, for any pur pofe, or in fubfervience to the ends for which the world and mankind were made is determininga queftion by prejudice. Book The Foundations of Religion Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Foundations of Religion Classic Reprint written by Stanley A. Cook and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-23 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundations of Religion We cannot properly understand things (men, events, beliefs, practices) unless we view them in their context, in the whole of which they are part, in the light of the preceding and following stages. The ape and the man are remarkably alike - or unlike - it depends upon the particular group of details (resemblances or differences) and the only critical estimate will be based upon both groups of evidence, and will refer the ape and the man to their environments and to their place in evolution. So, too, a religion (e.g. Christianity) may have remark able resemblances with other religions whether (1) now current, or (2) historically prior to it but it would be unwise to base an estimate upon those features alone or upon the differences alone. And if we proceed on these principles we must apply the same method to ourselves what we condemn in others may be virtually identical with something in ourselves, and what we think meritorious in our friends may be found in our foes. The fundamental resemblances will be obscured because of the fundamental differences, or vice versa. And if we pursue this further and compare men who are warmly enthusiastic and keenly zealous, we should find most interesting points of resemblance, so that the fiery religionist and the violent rationalist would have certain fundamental psychical similarities although their bodies of beliefs and practices might differ fundamentally. 0f.
