Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally Published by Scholars Press Now Available from Duke University Press Inquiring and Discerning Hearts is the first major examination of Protestant campus ministries since the publication of Kenneth Underwood's Danforth Study in 1969. The book consists of two parts. In part one, the authors trace the historical development of mainline Protestant campus ministries in their demonimational, institutional, and cultural settings since World War II. Utilizing denominational records of the Episcopal Church in the USA, the Presbyterian Church in the USA, and the United Methodist Church, as well as several private funding agencies, the authors offer a compelling description of how forces at work in American society, universities, churches, and in campus ministry itself interacted. In part two, the authors then build on their historical work by offering a prognosis for young adult ministries on campus and a prescription for how those ministries can be strengthened.

Download or read book Faith at Home written by Wendy Claire Barrie and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2016-10-01 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Add depth and meaning your family's traditions with these basic Christian practices that nurture and enrich everyone’s faith at home. Home and parents are the key mechanisms by which religious faith and practice are transmitted inter-generationally. Recent studies indicate that the single most important factor in youth becoming committed and engaged in their religious faith as young adults is that the family talks about religion at home. However, for many parents in the United States, religious language is a foreign language. Faith at Home helps parents learn this "second language" and introduce it to their children in simple, meaningful, concrete ways. Parents often ask: How do we introduce prayer to our children if we do not necessarily believe prayer changes outcomes? How do we approach reading the Bible with our children when our own relationship with it is mixed or complicated? How do we talk about difficult things and where do we find God in the midst of them? How do we teach our children to make a difference in the world? How do we connect what happens at church to what happens at home? These questions and many more are addressed with talking points, practices, and resources provided for each subject.

Download or read book Engaging the Spirit written by Robert Boak Slocum and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-02-20 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “For too long the Holy Spirit has tended to be either disregarded or the object of fanatical exclamation in the life of the church, especially in western Christianity,” writes general editor Robert Boak Slocum in his introduction to this stimulating collection of eighteen essays from a broad spectrum of noted authors. “The essays in this collection give attention to many ways of the Spirit’s life and activity—for salvation and healing, for making Christ present in our lives and in the church, for empowering our prayers and liturgies, for our inspiration and gifting, for transformation of the way we live, for the redemption of the world and the ultimate coming of God’s kingdom, for the unity of our relationships with each other and God. . . . As we recognize the Spirit’s activity in our traditions and doctrines, our prayers and liturgies, and in all aspects of the life we live, we may be better attuned to the leading of the Spirit into the future of faith and our life in God.” Engaging the Spirit was first published as a special Summer 2001 edition of the Anglican Theological Review, and is dedicated to the late Charles P. Price, theologian and professor at Virginia Seminary. A posthumously published essay by Dr. Price is a fitting and unique addition to the collection.

Download or read book Introduction to Christian Ethics written by Ellen Ott Marshall and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2018-10-30 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All Christians read the Bible differently, pray differently, value their traditions differently, and give different weight to individual and corporate judgment. These differences are the basis of conflict. The question Christian ethics must answer, then, is, "What does the good life look like in the context of conflict?" In this new introductory text, Ellen Ott Marshall uses the inevitable reality of difference to center and organize her exploration of the system of Christian morality. What can we learn from Jesus' creative use of conflict in situations that were especially attuned to questions of power? What does the image of God look like when we are trying to recognize the divine image within those with whom we are in conflict? How can we better explore and understand the complicated work of reconciliation and justice? This innovative approach to Christian ethics will benefit a new generation of students who wish to engage the perennial questions of what constitutes a faithful Christian life and a just society.
Download or read book It Takes a Church to Baptize written by Scot McKnight and published by Brazos Press. This book was released on 2018-08-21 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issue of baptism has troubled Protestants for centuries. Should infants be baptized before their faith is conscious, or does God command the baptism of babies whose parents have been baptized? Popular New Testament scholar Scot McKnight makes a biblical case for infant baptism, exploring its history, meaning, and practice and showing that infant baptism is the most historic Christian way of forming children into the faith. He explains that the church's practice of infant baptism developed straight from the Bible and argues that it must begin with the family and then extend to the church. Baptism is not just an individual profession of faith: it takes a family and a church community to nurture a child into faith over time. McKnight explains infant baptism for readers coming from a tradition that baptizes adults only, and he counters criticisms that fail to consider the role of families in the formation of faith. The book includes a foreword by Todd Hunter and an afterword by Gerald McDermott.
