Book excerpt: No previous generation has ever travelled so energetically or so obsessively as ours, nor has travel writing ever been so much in fashion as it is now. But behind the self-conscious literary artistry of today's narratives there lies a rich and fascinating history of travel writing, stretching back over several thousand years.Travel writing has emerged from migration, war, exploration, trade, conquest, pilgrimage, science, and poetic longing. But when they recorded their travels, the military commanders of Greece and Rome, the navigators of the Age of Discovery, the diplomats and missionaries of the seventeenth century, the dilettantes who set out on the Grand Tour, the romantic travellers and the scientists of the nineteenth century all had one thing in common: they were re-imagining the world, re-interpreting it in their own minds and for their readers. This is the first general survey of the entire history of travel literature, with illustrations reproduced from manuscripts and books in the Bodleian Library's collections. Writers covered include Marco Polo, Sir John Mandeville, Thomas Coryate, Captain Cook, T.E. Lawrence, and Christopher Columbus as well as Boswell and Johnson, Byron, Ruskin, Defoe, Conrad, and James. This book highlights over a hundred texts, showing how one motive for travelling has been succeeded by another, and how travel writing has often inhabited a strange borderland between truth and imagination, fact and fiction. It demonstrates how travel writers have slowly outgrown their traditional stance of superiority to all things 'foreign', and have moved towards a deeper sensitivity to other lands and other cultures.

Book excerpt: Soulshaping is the inspiring memoir of an archetypal "male warrior"–a trial lawyer–who struggled to find his heart and a more authentic, soulful path. Rivetingly personal and profoundly universal, this book is for anyone who has heard a whisper of something truer calling out to them amid the distractions of modern life. Jeff Brown’s dramatic and often funny story takes readers through remarkably human experiences–emotional, physical, and economic–as he vividly recounts his troubled childhood, his success in apprenticing with Canada’s top criminal lawyer, and his ultimate decision to leave the law and begin an inner journey to discover his soul’s purpose. A work of courageous self-creation, Soulshaping reminds us that we are all truly connected, that our seemingly isolated struggles are actually part of the shared human challenge to live a life that is heart-centered and soul-driven. Both down-to-earth and magically mystical, Soulshaping will meet you where you live–and where you long to live.

Book excerpt: Deep Travel has led writers from the Himalayan peaks of Nepal to the Saharan sands of Morocco, from the jungles of Mexico to the gitano caves in Spain. Just as compelling as those exterior landscapes we travel are the interior landscapes we encounter-the terrain of own thoughts and emotions. The writers in this anthology address both inner and outer adventures through stories, poems, and vignettes that are as informative as a travelogue yet as revelatory as a journal. During our trips, we collect many things-cactus silk scarves, handfuls of tin milagros-but the best souvenirs lie within this book: the observations, insights, and reflections that form the heart of Deep Travel.

Book Pilgrim Road Revised Edition

Download or read book Pilgrim Road Revised Edition written by Albert Holtz and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the view of St. Benedict of Nursia, the Lenten journey is an inner pilgrimage with Christ into the deepest parts of ourselves, to be marked not so much by external observances, such as fasting and self-denial, as by a deepening of our relationship with God. Benedictine monk Albert Holtz develops that journey theme through meditations written during a fifteen-country pilgrimage while on sabbatical. At the heart of each reflection is the lesson it teaches about our inner spiritual journey. By applying Benedict’s monastic wisdom to the everyday concerns and aspirations of modern Christians, Pilgrim Road helps contemporary spiritual seekers travel along and experience the journey of Lent in the most positive, meaningful, and fruitful manner.

Download or read book A Silent Journey written by Raghunandan and published by Readworthy. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The spirit of inquiry knocks at the door of our consciousness many times. But we conveniently brush it aside. And when we do nurture it, only a few of us are fortunate enough to come across a person who can clarify our doubts or quench our spiritual thirst. However, if a book is made available, which narrates some of the difficulties the seeker faces during his/her search of oneself, it might be of great help. And this book is an attempt in this direction. Explaining how aspiration (subheccha) for a life gets germinated and what should be the attitude of the seeker of Truth, it discusses at length the different methods of mind control, the intricacies of Asanas, Pranayama, Dharana, Dhyana and Bhakti. The experiences and discoveries of the seeker have also been incorporated."

Book Hajj Travelogues

    Book Details:
  • Author : Richard van Leeuwen
  • Publisher : BRILL
  • Release : 2024-06-06
  • ISBN : 9004514031
  • Pages : 1078 pages

Download or read book Hajj Travelogues written by Richard van Leeuwen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-06-06 with total page 1078 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Hajj Travelogues: Texts and Contexts from the 12th Century until 1950 Richard van Leeuwen maps the corpus of hajj accounts from the Muslim world and Europe. The work outlines the main issues in a field of study which has largely been neglected. A large number of hajj travelogues are described as a textual type integrating religious discourse into the form of the journey. Special attention is given to their intertextual embedding in the broader discursive tradition of the hajj. Since the corpus is seen as dynamic and responsive to historical developments, the texts are situated in their historical context and the subsequent phases of globalisation. It is shown how in travelogues forms of religious subjectivity are constructed and expressed.

Book Routledge Encyclopedia of Narrative Theory

Download or read book Routledge Encyclopedia of Narrative Theory written by David Herman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-06-10 with total page 1327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past several decades have seen an explosion of interest in narrative, with this multifaceted object of inquiry becoming a central concern in a wide range of disciplinary fields and research contexts. As accounts of what happened to particular people in particular circumstances and with specific consequences, stories have come to be viewed as a basic human strategy for coming to terms with time, process, and change. However, the very predominance of narrative as a focus of interest across multiple disciplines makes it imperative for scholars, teachers, and students to have access to a comprehensive reference resource.

Book British Travel Writers in Europe 1750 1800

Download or read book British Travel Writers in Europe 1750 1800 written by Katherine Turner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001: Hundreds of European travelogues produced by British travellers between 1750 and 1800 remain out of sight in most libraries and have generally been out of print since the 18th century. While many people with a working knowledge of the 18th century are familiar with works including Sterne's "A Sentimental Journey" and Smollett's "Travels through France and Italy", those produced by less "literary" travellers are largely unknown. This study aims to recreate the world of 18th-century travel writing in order to illuminate its central role in shaping Britain's emerging sense of national identity - an identity which proves to be more complex an less homogeneous than some cultural and historical studies would suggest. The author finds that the developing discourse of national character is bound up with questions of gender: national and authorial virtue are projected in terms of appropriately gendered behaviour, for male and female travel writers alike. In turn, gender intersects with class, most obviously in the tendency to denigrate aristocratic travellers as effeminate and celebrate the more manly activities of the middle-class traveller. These then - national identity, authorship and gender - are the central preoccupations of the study
