Book An Initial Study of the Injection of an Intense Relativistic Electron Beam Into the Atmosphere

Download or read book An Initial Study of the Injection of an Intense Relativistic Electron Beam Into the Atmosphere written by R. B. Fiorito and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the VEBA pulse generator (approx. or less than 2 MV, approx 60 kAmp, approx. 60 ns) and a field emission diode with a titanium foil anode (approx. 43 micrometers), relativistic electron beams with v/y approx. 0.5 have been produced and injected into the atmosphere. Typical injected net currents were approx. 35 kAmps and there was little plasma return current (approx. or less than 20%). These beams were observed to expand and contract at the betatron wavelength lambda sub beta approx. 12 cm) as they propagated through the atmosphere and to become unstable at approx. lambda sub beta. Observations were made in both visible light (2000-6000 Angstroms and x-radiation (10-100 keV). Peak current densities reached approx. 3kAmp/sq. cm. at approx. 20 cm from the diode where the beam appeared to consist of two separate coaxial components both of near uniform current density. The central component contained approx. 65% of the total beam current and was initially within a radius of approx. 1.4 cm. The outer component of the beam started with a radius of approx. 5 cm (defined by the anode foil) and appeared to expand steadily. The visible emissions belonged to the species N2 and N2+ and were synchronous with the electron beam current. The absolute emission in the band N2+ 1N(0-0) agreed with the calculated fluorescence intensity within experimental uncertainty, but the emission in the band N(2)2P(0-0) was approx 6 times larger than suggested by simple fluorescence calculations. A simple technique was devised to select a fraction of the electron beam emerging from the diode to produce a pinched matched beam. (Author).

Book Soviet Research on the Transport of Intense Relativistic Electron Beams Through High pressure Air

Download or read book Soviet Research on the Transport of Intense Relativistic Electron Beams Through High pressure Air written by Nikita Wells and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soviet research on the propagation of intense relativistic electron beams (IREB) through fairly high-pressure air (pressure range 0.1 to 760 Torr) since the early 1970s has included the study of the plasma channel created by the passage of the electron beam through air, the resistive hose instability and its effect on beam propagation, the effect of self-fields, current enhancement, gas expansion, return currents, inherent beam energy spread, and other factors. This report covers Soviet developments in IREB propagation through air where the beam is not focused by external magnetic fields. The information was obtained from Soviet open-source publications with emphasis given to the last ten years of beam propagation in the Soviet Union. The volume of papers published on this subject in recent years indicates a significant increase in Soviet research in this area.

Book Study of Relativistic Electron Beam Propagation in the Atmosphere Ionosphere Magnetosphere

Download or read book Study of Relativistic Electron Beam Propagation in the Atmosphere Ionosphere Magnetosphere written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Models for propagation physics and associated ionospheric/atmospheric modification have been developed for the space-based injection of relativistic (E( - ) 1-100 MeV) electron beams. Initial evaluations of beam propagation effects in the ionosphere, magnetosphere, and atmosphere have been conducted. The overall goal of this work was to develop computational tools and use them to better assess relavistic beam launch, propagation, and interaction with the space environment and atmosphere. Computational tools developed and then applied to this problem. include models addressing: beam propagation using an envelope equation; integrated beam-atmosphere interactions (This model contains time-dependent chemistry effects necessary to compute optical emissions as a function of altitude); beam launch and propagation using particle-in-cell (PIC) techniques; and magnetospheric propagation and plasma transport (Khazanov models). It is concluded that for practical beam energies and current the beam propagation is stable This is done theoretically and using the PIC modeling. Over long distance propagation the Khazanov models were able to show that the beam particles will scatter in pitch-angle and relative location, but lifetimes are expected to be similar to those found for the radiation belts for nearly equatorial mirroring injection.

Book Dynamics of an Intense Relativistic Electron Beam Injected Into Full Density Air

Download or read book Dynamics of an Intense Relativistic Electron Beam Injected Into Full Density Air written by R. B. Fiorito and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have injected an intense relativistic electron beam (about 1 Mev, 16 kA, 25 ns) into the atmosphere and observed the beam in visible light caused by direct beam excitation of air molecules. The emitted visible light was primarily emission in the 2nd positive system of N2 which was delayed with respect to the beam current by about 6 ns but had the same duration (FWHM) as the beam current. Streak photographs of the beam in this visible light were taken with an Imacon 790 camera at various axial positions with a camera time resolution of about 1 ns. These photographs show that the beam remained a single current filament which oscillated about its initial direction as it propagated through the atmosphere, and that while the 'body' of the beam was pinched to a radius of or = 5 cm the 'nose' was expanded to give the characteristic trumpet-like shape. Beam and net current monitors were used to determine the beam current and the plasma return current whose peak value was or = 60% of the peak beam current. Comparison of the measured net current to that predicted from the calculated air conductivity and a simple circuit model to represent the beam propagating in the atmosphere showed good agreement provided a transmission line model including the capacitance of the beam in the ionized atmosphere was used. Book Experiments on the Junction of Relativistic Electron Beams Into Preformed Channels in the Atmosphere A Feasibility Study

Download or read book Experiments on the Junction of Relativistic Electron Beams Into Preformed Channels in the Atmosphere A Feasibility Study written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was made of the interaction of an intense relativistic electron beam (REB) with a preformed reduced density channel in the atmosphere. The channel was designated by laser-induced, aerosol-initiated air-breakdown and was heated by passage of an electric current. However, at the time the REB was injected into the channel no externally applied heating current remained. By varying the time between creation of the hot channel and injection of the REB, we were able to observe interactions of the beam with both high conductivity and low conductivity channels. In the former case the beam did not propagate in the channel, whereas in the latter case the beam did propagate in the channel. These results are discussed in terms of the residual conductivity in the channel, and in terms of the radius of the return current distribution compared to that of the beam.

This book was released on 1986 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report analyzes Soviet research on the transport of intense relativistic electron beams (IREB) through low-pressure air and other gases without external magnetic fields. It reviews research reported in open-source technical publications from seven Soviet research institutes. These research papers indicate that Soviet interest in long-distance IREB transport at low gas pressure has endured from 1979 to the present.
