Book German Infantryman at War 1939 1945

Download or read book German Infantryman at War 1939 1945 written by George Forty and published by Ian Allan Pub. This book was released on 2002 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "German Infantryman at War 1939-1945 tells this story using many unpublished photographs taken by Gerhard Sandmann, a typical infantryman. Born at Vlotho on the River Weser on 25 June, 1918, he joined the German Army at Northeim in September 1939 and served as an infantry soldier until he was captured in 1944. The major difference between him and so many thousands of his compatriots was that he survived and so did his photographic record of the places he went." "Backing up the photographs are reminiscences and battle accounts from individual soldiers and official wartime reports. These examine every aspect of the daily life of a soldier - the bad times and the more fleeting good ones - the moments of sheer terror and those of comradeship. This book is not a tribute to war, but an honest attempt to explain what it was like to be a German infantry soldier during World War II."--BOOK JACKET.

Book The Evolution of US Army Tactical Doctrine 1946 76

Download or read book The Evolution of US Army Tactical Doctrine 1946 76 written by Robert A. Doughty and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper focuses on the formulation of doctrine since World War II. In no comparable period in history have the dimensions of the battlefield been so altered by rapid technological changes. The need for the tactical doctrines of the Army to remain correspondingly abreast of these changes is thus more pressing than ever before. Future conflicts are not likely to develop in the leisurely fashions of the past where tactical doctrines could be refined on the battlefield itself. It is, therefore, imperative that we apprehend future problems with as much accuracy as possible. One means of doing so is to pay particular attention to the business of how the Army's doctrine has developed historically, with a view to improving methods of future development.

Book Blood and Candles

Download or read book Blood and Candles written by Edward T. Richardson and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the author's words, taken from the preface: "I went on active duty on the first day of July 1943, and was discharged in March 1946. Between those dates I experienced the frightening, the pathetic, the moving, the ridiculous, the funny and the unbelievable, all to a degree I would not have thought possible. Just short of my twenty-second birthday I entered the Army a bookish, somewhat introverted person. For what happened then, read on." A remarkable story of courage, resourcefulness, tragedy and humor, Blood and Candles is unlike any other account of World War II that has ever been published. The author's combat duty lasted for seven months during which he served as a runner or scout, sometimes finding himself alone behind enemy lines. Once he was even captured by the Americans and was almost shot as a German spy posing as an American. How he got out of that jam and many others will keep the reader fascinated from cover to cover. While the climax of the book describes some of the most intense combat of the war, in which almost everyone around him was killed or seriously wounded, the author's experiences during basic training and after the War, attending the Sorbonne under the auspices of the Army, are equally fascinating.

Book An Infantryman s Reflections on World War II

Download or read book An Infantryman s Reflections on World War II written by Tom Lacey and published by . This book was released on 2019-07-19 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever wonder what a soldier in the Battle of the Bulge encountered? This book was written by a WWII Infantryman who volunteered after hearing news of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Tom Lacey was fascinated with aeronautics as a young boy, so naturally, he wanted to be trained to become a pilot; instead, he was assigned to the Army Infantry and volunteered to take a radioman post. Barraged by German artillery, with radio connection completely lost, Lacey later realized he survived the beginnings of the Battle of the Bulge. Of the 200 men in his unit, he was one of 12 to survive from the time of their entry into combat. Rather than discussing the traumas of war, Tom writes of experiencing friendship, heroism, benevolence, innovation, close calls - even humor and sacred beautiful moments. Join him as he recounts the characters from his personal experiences during this intense period in American history that are sure to inspire!

Download or read book The Gentle Infantryman written by William Young Boyd and published by Elton-Wolf Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ground war on the mainland of Europe began on D-Day, June 6, 1944. After the initial ferocity of the Normandy invasion came the summer's grim deadlines in the hedgerows. The subsequent Allied breakout and dash across France was followed by the battles at the gates of Germany that occupied the entire autumn of 1944. Winter set in. Spring promised a new Allied assault that would sweep into Germany from the west. But the Germans did not intend to wait for spring. In the middle of December, they struck with three Panzer armies in the Ardennes. The attack was swift and unexpeced and drove a "bulge" into the American line. The bitter winter turned brutal as armies surged back and forth leaving trails of blood in the snow. The Germans struck again, this time in Alsace. They hit hard against a thin line. They attacked with Panzers, SS infantry, and crack paratroops. Again, the Americans fought back with a valiant desperation, throwing in all their reserves; now, in the first days of January 1945, they had emptied their infantry replacement depots from Le Havre to the Ardennes and from Marseilles to Alsace. Everything they had was on the line.

Book An Infantryman s War

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alexander G Waddell
  • Publisher : iUniverse
  • Release : 2005-07
  • ISBN : 0595362443
  • Pages : 96 pages

Download or read book An Infantryman s War written by Alexander G Waddell and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-07 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander Waddell is my brother. He is fifteen months younger than me, but he soon surpassed me in size, strength, and mechanical ingenuity. He was good with his hands as well as his head, far outclassing me in his ability to make things work. This was to stand him in good stead throughout his army career. In 1937, with Hitler threatening the peace of Europe, he enrolled in the Territorial Army, along with about thirty others from the Perthshire town of Auchterarder. This book describes his experiences from the day he joined until the day he was demobbed. His was no easy war. The Black Watch is a famous fighting regiment, and saw plenty of action, in Africa, in France, and in Norway. He saw die beside him comrades whom he had known since childhood. His book is no glorification of war. It is a realistic depiction of life in the infantry, as seen by an ordinary, and extraordinary, soldier. -John Waddell

Book The Other End of the Spear

Download or read book The Other End of the Spear written by John J. Mcgrath and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-09-16 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at several troop categories based on primary function and analyzes the ratio between these categories to develop a general historical ratio. This ratio is called the Tooth-to-Tail Ratio. McGrath's study finds that this ratio, among types of deployed US forces, has steadily declined since World War II, just as the nature of warfare itself has changed. At the same time, the percentage of deployed forces devoted to logistics functions and to base and life support functions have increased, especially with the advent of the large-scale of use of civilian contractors. This work provides a unique analysis of the size and composition of military forces as found in historical patterns. Extensively illustrated with charts, diagrams, and tables. His story, written in old age is surprisingly fresh, vital and full of concise detail. Download or read book Home of the Infantry written by Peggy A. Stelpflug and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Fort Benning's history tells the story of the US infantry. For most of a century, Fort Benning's infantry school has graduated the soldiers who lead as well as the fighting foot soldiers in the dirt and mud. Founded on farm land in Georgia, it has been one of the US Army's premier installations from the days of the Doughboys to a more modern era where Rangers proudly wear their Ranger berets." "Fort Benning's long history has produced an impressive alumni list. Eisenhower coached its football team. Marshall rewrote the curriculum. Patton pushed men to prepare for battle. Bradley organized its Officer Candidate School, a source for men of rank in World War II. Powell and Schwarzkopf were honor graduates, as were Eaton and Freakley and other heroes from the sands of Iraq." "Fort Benning trained soldiers in the art of the bayonet. It prepared them to jump out of airplanes. It discovered the mobility and power of helicopters. It honed the technology of the Bradley Fighting Vehicle. It has set the table for war in the trenches, war on the ground, war in the air, and war in the desert. Infantry has led the way and so has Fort Benning. It truly is the Home of the Infantry."--BOOK JACKET.
