Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Inductive Greek Method There is clearly no demand for a new Introductory Greek book, unless it is one which differs essentially from those which are already in use. The score or more of methods which have appeared in this country are constructed according to the same idea. Though many of them are scholarly and progressive, all are merely companions to the grammar, and not guides to the language. The existence of so many methods indicates a feeling that, thus far, an entirely satisfactory introductory book has not been found. If anything additional were needed to justify the exist ence of this feeling, it would be found in the lack of interest which characterizes the average student of Greek, and in the confessedly small results accomplished in college. The method presented in this book claims to overcome both of these difficulties. It will arouse enthusiasm; it will increase results. It is not supposed that this claim will be accepted until the merits of the method have been tested in the class-room, but the following outline of the plan of work which it advocates may, perhaps, show the value of the principles on which the claim is based. Book A Greek Primer Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Greek Primer Classic Reprint written by Clarence Willard Gleason and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Greek Primer The sentences to be rendered into Greek are cut down to the mini mum. The editor has found it a valuable practice with beginners in Greek and Latin to require the English of the translation exercises in the daily review lesson to be written in blank books, to be retranslated into Greek or Latin as a composition exercise. He believes that the careful study and memorizing of Greek sentences to be turned again into Greek, correctly written and accented, is a more helpful and much less discouraging process than the translation of English into original Greek, -at least in the early stages and with young pupils. The english-greek sentences may well be taken up, together with the short selections for reading, In a general or monthly review. In these days of horseless carriages and Wireless telegraphy the learner may be led to expect a workless Greek book; but that blessing, alas, is not yet in sight. To attain the little knowledge requisite to carry on the study of Greek in school or college, careful attention, common sense, and some study are necessary. It is hoped, however, that the present Primer shall clear the way of a few difficulties, and if it does not create an interest in the subject, that it shall at least remove some of the fears which beset the student's way. The Primer is designed to occupy a half year, or, at the most. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Book in Greek This book is an attempt to meet the growing demand of teachers for a preparatory book which shall be at the same time systematic, brief, and thorough. It is complete in itself and does not require the use of a grammar. The forms of inflection and the usages of syntax have been stated first, and then illustrated. This system we believe to be clearer, and to give better results, than any inductive method, which may at first seem interesting, but soon becomes burdensome and confusing. Book The First Greek Book Classic Reprint

Download or read book The First Greek Book Classic Reprint written by John Williams White and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Greek Book Since the publication of my Beginner's Greek Book in 1892, I have from time to time had letters from teachers in different parts of the country, who have informed me that the Beginner's Book, because of its length, was not well adapted for use in the schools in which they taught, and who have urged me to prepare a briefer book on the same plan. They wished a book, they said, which could be completed in two terms, and which would properly prepare their pupils for the rapid but exact reading of a book of the Anabasis during the last third of the year. The First Greek Book is an attempt to meet this reasonable request. I am aware that it is impossible that any elementary book should be equally well adapted to the needs of all schools but I have at least succeeded in making this book briefer than its immediate predecessor. In writing it I have aimed to give, first, only such fundamental facts of Greek grammar as the young pupil must know before he can begin to read the connected narrative of Xenophon intelligently and with pleasure, and secondly, a moderate amount of practice, both in reading and in writing, in the application of these principles. I have entirely excluded from the eighty lessons into which the First Greek Book is divided the Attic second declension, the systematic treatment of the affinity of words, word lists, word groups, the principles of word formation, and the divi sion of verbs into eight classes, although provision is made for the study of some of these important matters, if the teacher finds the time for it, in the materials furnished in the Appendix. Further. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Greek Grammar Greek Course of which this First Greek Grammar should be the starting point. The aim of the new series is to bring into the fore ground the great main lines of Greek accidence and syntax, in short to teach the regular and ordinary modes of expres sion in use at the time when the most precise of languages had reached its highest precision. Accordingly it was necos sary carefully to revise the Grammar if it was to take its proper place in the series. I have to acknowledge a great deal of very generous and valued help, not only from my colleagues and friends, but also from many others who in using the book had detected errors or observed ways of improving it. More especially I have to thank my colleague Mr. Heard for many suggestions and much assistance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
