Book A Canadian Heraldic Primer

Download or read book A Canadian Heraldic Primer written by Kevin Greaves and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heraldry is now. Heraldry is fun. And most of all, heraldry is Canadian! A Canadian Heraldic Primer dispels, once and for all, the myth that coats of arms are boring, snobbish, mediaeval holdovers that have no relevance today. Using cartoons, humour, and not a little irreverence (in which is concealed a surprising amount of information), Kevin Greaves explains the history behind heraldry's unique conventions and language, and explores its creative possibilities. He shows heraldry as part of the fabric of Canada's past, present, and future, and illustrates how this lively art has become livelier since Canada became master of its own heraldic system in 1988.

What started to be a small project has grown into something larger that I could not have possibly imagined. Readers of the first two editions were prompt to give me comments and suggestions in order to improve the second edition as the news of the text spread. After compiling these comments, I am happy to present to you this third edition of the documentation of heraldry in Northern Canada. You will find that the most notable addition to the text is the artwork of the achievements. This will help assist in describing the details of each component. You will also notice several additions such as a new section on Ecclesiastical heraldry and even a section on Badges in Northern Canada as well as a Military section. Thank you again for your continued support in this project.

In its pages, I will try to identify elements that are unique to the region and the significance that they have. Like no other people, Northern Canadians tell their stories through achievements that Canada has never seen before. I have also included a bibliography at the end of this book so that you may read further about this fascinating aspect of heraldry. I hope that you enjoy this book and take out of it what I enjoyed putting into it

The third edition contains more artwork so readers can visually see the artwork as well as expanded sections for a full picture of the beauty that is contained in the heraldic artwork of Northern Canadians.

Book The Wargaming Compendium

Download or read book The Wargaming Compendium written by Henry Hyde and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2013-08-19 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extensive reference guide to the exciting hobby, for beginners as well as longtime players. Wargaming is a fascinating, engrossing, and exciting pastime that encompasses a wide range of different talents. The average wargamer uses the skills of artist, designer, sculptor, illustrator, historian, librarian, researcher, mathematician, and creative writer, as well as the more obvious ones of general, admiral, or air marshal for large games, or perhaps lieutenant, commodore, or squadron leader for skirmishes. Aside from calling upon many skills, wargaming also covers many aspects of combat, spanning the history of Earth. With science fiction gaming, we plunge into imagined worlds many thousands of years into the future, and a fantasy gamer, of course, deals with eons of imagined history, as anyone who has read The Lord of the Rings will know. A wargamer may find themselves recreating an encounter between a handful of adversaries one day, or a massed battle involving perhaps hundreds of miniature troops the next. Moreover, it is possible to play wargames that recreate warfare on land, on sea, in the air, or even in outer space. This book demonstrates the wonderfully varied hobby of wargaming with miniatures, looking at the broad scope of what it has to offer as well as detailed explanations of how to get involved, including comprehensive rules for gladiator combat, Wild West skirmishes, and the horse and musket era, as well as lots of advice for anyone new to wargaming. Whether you’re a complete newcomer to the hobby, or a veteran of many years, you’ll find plenty in The Wargaming Compendium to entertain and inspire you.
