Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By: Clara B. Langley, Pub. 1984, reprinted 2023, 442 pages, Soft Cover, Index, ISBN #0-89308-273-2. These four volumes contain the abstracts of the records of the Register of the Province of South Carolina from 1719-1772. These abstracts of conveyances and deeds, and occasionally miscellaneous records, cover all parts of the state, from the Proprietary period until just prior to the Revolution. The original copies remain in Charleston in the Office of the Register of Mesne Conveyance, where all deeds for the entire state were recorded until the state capital was moved to Columbia well after the Revolution. After 1785, the individual counties in South Carolina began recording their own deeds, but prior to this date, one must look for his or her ancestor's deed in these volumes being abstracted. These abstracts were prepared for the Works Progress Administration by Miss. Langley in the 1930's. They have been thoroughly indexed for grantors, grantees, adjacent property owners and all other individuals whose names appeared in such conveyances. Each volume contains a full-name index of individuals; a place name index of all places such as rivers, plantations, towns, countries; as well as an occupation index.

Book South Carolina Deed Abstracts 1776 1783 Books Y 4 Through H 5

Download or read book South Carolina Deed Abstracts 1776 1783 Books Y 4 Through H 5 written by Brent Holcomb and published by . This book was released on 2018-10-30 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a continuation of the abstracts prepared under Clara Langley of the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s. Until the establishment of county courts in South Carolina in 1785, all deeds were recorded in Charleston. The original deed books remain in the Office of the Register of Mesne Conveyance in Charleston County Court House. While the deeds in these deed books (Y-4 through H-5) were recorded between 1776 and 1783, within these deed books are instruments dating from a much earlier time, some as early as 1722. There are often several books containing deeds recorded in the same year. There are also occasional notations, especially in the case of mortgages, dated later than the recording dates of the deeds or mortgages. After the border surveys between North Carolina and South Carolina in 1764 and 1772, many lands formerly deemed to be North Carolina fell into South Carolina. For that reason, some deeds refer to lands granted by North Carolina, sometimes called "north patents." For the same reason, some deeds formerly recorded in North Carolina, particularly in Tryon County, were re-recorded in the Charleston deed books. In the Colonial period, South Carolina had only four counties: Granville, Colleton, Berkeley, and Craven; which were further divided into parishes and districts. Maps of the counties, parishes, and districts; and, a full-name index add to the value of this work.

Book The Royal American Regiment

  • Author : Alexander V. Campbell
  • Publisher : University of Oklahoma Press

Download or read book The Royal American Regiment written by Alexander V. Campbell and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2014-10-22 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of Braddock’s defeat at Fort Duquesne in 1755, the British army raised the 60th, or Royal American, Regiment of Foot to fight the French and Indian War. Each of the regiment’s four battalions saw action in pivotal battles throughout the conflict. And as Alexander Campbell shows, the inclusion of foreign mercenaries and immigrant colonists alongside British volunteers made the RAR a microcosm of the Atlantic world. Not just a potent, combat-ready force, it played a key role in trade, migration, Indian diplomacy, and settlement. This book moves beyond the campaign orientation of most regimental histories to explore how the Royal Americans helped forge new Atlantic connections. Campbell draws on the regiment’s rich archival legacy—including the private papers of its first three colonels-in-chief and of mercenary field officers—to describe more fully than previous accounts the lives these soldiers led in the context of their times. Campbell takes a closer look at the motivations of regimental founder James Prevost, a Swiss mercenary in the courts of Kings George II and George III, and explores how migration to America attracted rank-and-file soldiers. He examines the unit’s training, deployment, and operational conduct to reveal the use of new tactics, and also chronicles a year in the soldiers’ lives as they attended to hard labor in preparation for the summer’s campaigns. He also traces the postwar activities of these veterans, showing how many of them, by taking up land grants they had been promised upon enlistment, helped settle the frontier and expand commerce. Rather than focus on previously documented animosity between British regulars and provincials, Campbell reveals how soldiers from different backgrounds formed a multiracial, multilingual society that reflected a truly cosmopolitan transatlantic identity
