Download or read book Bound by Beliefs written by Joseph C. Way and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2019-10-30 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since everyone has a “god” that controls them, it is wise to ask who or what that is, how we choose it and how to respond? We must also ask how tradition, the Bible, church, family and other factors affect our beliefs and behaviors. Joseph C. Way wrestles with these and other issues and reaches some uncommon conclusions about God, Jesus, and Us. He affirms God is love. God acts from love and so do we! Other specific emphases include: how presuppositions (beliefs) dictate behavior; the profound significance of the human Jesus; the need to renounce, redefine and restore certain beliefs; why our future depends on what and how we love. The author seriously differs from the apostle Paul on who and what Jesus was. Our “salvation” depends not on the death of Jesus but on living by his two directives gleaned from Hebrew scripture. The author invites everyone to join him in proclaiming and practicing “appropriate love” so that we may reduce human and environmental discord for everyone, regardless of their nationality or religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries, numerous people have asked “How do you get right and stay right with ‘god’?” Since a person’s god is whatever they value (love) the most, possible gods are limitless. When asked from the Judeo-Christian perspective, the question is narrowed but the answers are extremely diverse. Due to many identified factors, the author believes incorrect answers have been too frequently offered, starting soon after the death of Jesus and continuing to this day. Due to God’s nature and ours, the author bases his answer exclusively on appropriate (God-like) love as described and practiced by Jesus. The ancient Hebrews recognized the original answer and Jesus repeated it when he insisted we love God above all else and then love our neighbor as our self. Paul got it all wrong. Jesus did not fill the empty spaces in Paul’s Judaism. Believe Jesus and act like it.

Book One Korean s Approach to Buddhism

Download or read book One Korean s Approach to Buddhism written by Sung Bae Park and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2009-01-29 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insights into the experience and philosophy of Buddhism from a Korean perspective. This book presents the author?s lifelong study and practice of Buddhism from a Korean perspective. With depth, sensitivity, and candor, Sung Bae Park discusses his country?s contribution to Mahayana Buddhism and also shares his personal experience. A monk in the Korean Chogye order during his early twenties, Park is uniquely qualified to offer the reader some valuable insights into the experience and philosophy of the Zen Buddhist. Focusing on the Korean concepts mom (which refers to the body) and momjit (which refers to its gestures or functions), Park examines their nondual, interdependent nature and their relevance to ordinary human beings who are living in these turbulent times. He also introduces a specialized spiritual practice using the hwadu, which aids the religious practitioner in loosening his conceptual, intellectual grip on his life and the world around him. In addition, the author explores the relevance of his views to other religions and philosophies, including Taoism, Confucianism, and Christianity. Those well acquainted with Buddhism will find much food for thought here, as familiar topics such as emptiness, nonduality, and enlightenment are presented in a refreshingly original way, and those new to Buddhist thought may find themselves stimulated to learn more. A helpful glossary of terms is included. Sung Bae Park is Professor of Asian Philosophy and Religions and Director of the Center for Korean Studies at Stony Brook University, State University of New York. He is the author of Buddhist Faith and Sudden Enlightenment, also published by SUNY Press.

Book excerpt: Written with passion, transparency, humor, and a deep devotion to the Word of God, Dealing with the Difficult in a God-Honoring Way is unique among devotionals or Bible study guides due to its personal and conversational narrative. Shanna Braun draws upon her personal experiences in life and as a seasoned Bible teacher to lead people who are struggling with difficult life situations to the foundations of the Christian faith and a “satisfied mind.” This study begins with a thorough discussion of pertinent scriptures focusing on “What we need to know” leading to “What we need to do” to enjoy a satisfied mind and build a life on a stable, firm foundation. Topics include God’s love for His creation, the fall of humanity leading to our ultimate despair, and concludes with God’s solution in His great love and mercy. Ms. Braun’s unique approach to forgiveness, the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives, and the security found in truth shows the reader how to live life beyond despair while navigating difficult and painful situations and relationships. Dealing with the Difficult in a God-Honoring Way will invite readers to go deeper in their relationships with God and others while establishing an armory of scripture passages to thwart the strategies of the enemy. A wonderful guide for individual and group study!

Book A Comparative Study of Don Juan and Madhyamaka Buddhism

Download or read book A Comparative Study of Don Juan and Madhyamaka Buddhism written by Mark Macdowell and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publishe. This book was released on 1981 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication of Carlos Castaneda`s works on the teachings of Don Juan, a yaqui Indian seer, was a momentous event in the history of esoteric literature. At the time of their publication, the author was engaged in the study of Indian philosophy, with special reference to the Madhyamaka Buddhism, as formulated and expounded by Nagarjuna. The author was struck by the profound similarities between the teachings of Don Juan and Nagarjuna--in particular concerning Samvrti and Paramartha of Madhyamaka and the Tonal and Nagual of Don Juan and the concept of categorical frameworks. This recognition on his part prompted him to compose the present work. The author has chosen to write in a manner and style intelligible to the non-specialiist and yet an inquiring reader. The essential unity of human experience is clearly demonstrated by the fact that human beings widely separated in space, time, language and culture, discern, at their wisest, the same fundamental truths concerning man and the world.

Book Of Caves and Caving

Download or read book Of Caves and Caving written by John E. Gillett and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2002-05-08 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What is caving? Caving is fun. Caving is in the darkness. Caving is illuminating. Caving is dangerous. Caving is a minority sport for idiots." This book comes tantalizingly close to explaining the reasons why apparently sane, rational individuals are driven by some mysterious force to take seemingly senseless risks in the exploration of caves and underground caving systems. The author's exciting journey takes us through a series of adventures beginning at a time when potholers were regarded as rather eccentric, a belief reinforced by the popular press, hungry for news of every mishap or accident. The journey continues as an eloquently written whistle-stop tour spanning four decades and several continents giving an insight into "what makes cavers tick." There is something here for everyone-from the experienced hard man to non-caver alike, with tales to suit all tastes, of exploits from the humorous to terrifying, with interesting anecdotes that will maintain the reader's interest throughout. Each step of the journey keeps one wondering what lies around the next corner.
