Book Effect of Aqueous Stannous Fluoride on Enamel Solubility

Download or read book Effect of Aqueous Stannous Fluoride on Enamel Solubility written by Ira L. Shannon and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aqueous solutions of stannous fluoride were evaluated as agents for reducing lactic acid de-calcification of human dental enamel. Performance was measured by the amount of phosphorus removed from enamel before and after fluoride treatment. Phosphorus was determined automatically on the AutoAnalyzer. SnF2 solutions of 5.0, 10.0, and 20.0 percent concentration were significantly more effective than 0.4, 0.7, and 1.0 percent solutions. Aqueous preparations of stannous fluoride maintained their protective potency throughout the 12-week experimental period.

This initial caries lesion involves the dynamic process of demineralization and remineralization. Fluoride varnish has been shown to prevent WSL in post-eruptive tooth. The literature review summarized the available evidence on the various agents added to topical fluoride varnish, such as casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP), xylito-coated calcium and phosphate, amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) and tri-calcium phosphate (TCP) that proposed for enhancing the anticariogenic properties. It is clear that all agents has 5% sodium fluoride as major ingredient; however, there is conflicting evidence regarding the anticaries effect of these agents. The in vitro study evaluated the effect of different fluoride varnishes on remineralization of artificial enamel caries. Enamel blocks (n=60) were randomly divided into six groups (n=10) based on the topical fluoride varnish: (a) Group 0: Control, no application of varnish, (b) Group 1: Duraphat varnish, (c) Group 2: MI Varnish containing casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate, (d) Group 3: Embrace varnish containing xylitol-coated calcium and phosphate, (e) Group 4: Enamel Pro containing amorphous calcium phosphate, (f) Group 5: Clinpro White varnish containing functionalized tricalcium phosphate. The study concluded that Duraphat varnish alone achieve significant remineralization of enamel carious lesions. Clinpro White varnish had similar enamel remineralization effect as Duraphat varnish. Book In Vivo Assessment of the Solubility of Tooth Enamel During an FBM Patrol

Download or read book In Vivo Assessment of the Solubility of Tooth Enamel During an FBM Patrol written by Dale T. Zorn and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The solubility of dental enamel is a prime factor in the dental decay process. Conditions which may influence the enamel solubility and the degree of normal variation of this factor are therefore of interest to the Navy Dental Corps. Enamel solubility was determined in a group of volunteers from the crew of a Polaris submarine. These individuals are exposed continuously for about 70 days in a sealed environment, one known characteristic of which is a higher-than-normal atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide. The subjects were selected on the basis of the time elapsed since their last topical fluoride treatment. Solubility was determined on the basis of the amount of phosphorus leached from the enamel by a weak acid under standard conditions. Samples were collected at the beginning, middle, and end of the patrol. No important mean differences were noted in the enamel solubility between the three test periods. Evidently the FBM environment had little or no effect on enamel solubility. Wide individual variations were noted and are unexplained. (Author).
