Book excerpt: Many manufacturing systems such as foundries are not classical random job shops since the same machine sequence is followed by most of the jobs. A natural approach to scheduling job shops of this sort is to take advantage of the similarities exhibited by the majority of the jobs. In this thesis, we extend a tabu search algorithm for scheduling flow shops to allow it to effectively schedule job shops with this favorable structure. According to Just-in-Time theory, the minimization of weighted early and tardy penalties is used as objective function. Results show that this method can improve local search solutions and provide comparable results with lagrangian relaxation in a much shorter time. Therefore, the proposed method is practical for solving the sort of large-scale problems that are often encountered in manufacturing.
