Book excerpt: An improved method using a moving source approach is utilized in the analysis of Rayleigh surface waves for the accurate identification of higher mode propagation used in inversion. Two non invasive surface wave methods, Multi- station Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) and Refraction Microtremor (ReMi) were used for the construction of composite dispersion curves representing the relationship of Rayleigh phase velocity (VR) with frequency. Multiple tests were executed with source offsets increasing with each successive test in order to account for near field effects and higher mode attenuation levels. The resulting dispersions were combined to form a composite dispersion which effectively maps all participating modes of propagation. The inversion was executed using a genetic algorithm (GA) which takes advantage of the Rayleigh forward problem. The results show good ability to identify intermediate high and low velocity layers and agree well with downhole results. .

Book excerpt: On September 1996, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), prohibiting nuclear explosions worldwide, in all environments. The treaty calls for a global verification system, including a network of 321 monitoring stations distributed around the globe, a data communications network, an international data center (IDC), and on-site inspections to verify compliance. Seismic methods play the lead role in monitoring the CTBT. This volume concentrates on the measurement and use of surface waves in monitoring the CTBT. Surface waves have three principal applications in CTBT monitoring: to help discriminate nuclear explosions from other sources of seismic energy, to provide mathematical characterizations of the seismic energy that emanates from seismic sources, and to be used as data in inversion for the seismic velocity structure of the crust and uppermost mantle for locating small seismic events regionally. The papers in this volume fall into two general categories: the development and/or application of methods to summarize information in surface waves, and the use of these summaries to advance the art of surface-wave identification, measurement, and source characterization. These papers cut across essentially all of the major applications of surface waves to monitoring the CTBT. This volume therefore provides a general introduction to the state of research in this area and should be useful as a guide for further exploration.

Book excerpt: The primary goal of this project is to improve the capability to identify and detect surface waves for the purpose of earthquake/explosion discrimination. We are developing improved, higher resolution earth and dispersion models. The models consist of approximately 600 distinct crust and upper mantle structures, with surface layering and/or ocean depths that vary on a one-degree grid. There are a total of 64,800 earth models and dispersion curves, but the tomographic inversion is performed only for the 600 distinct crust and upper mantle models, with the shallow structure constrained by other information. The data set used in the inversion now consists of approximately 548,000 phase and group velocity dispersion measurements obtained from a variety of sources. Surface sediments are defined using the global sediment maps of Laske and Masters (1997), and ocean bathymetry is defined using the Etopo5 topographic data set. Automatic identification of surface waves at the International Data Centre is currently performed by narrow-band filtering the data at several frequencies, and then comparing the arrival times with a regionalized dispersion model. We have implemented and tested a new procedure in which we first phasematch filter the data and then apply narrow-band filters to the compressed waveform and use a detection test similar to the current test. This allows us to take advantage of the improved signal-to-noise ratio of the phase-match filtered waveforms, while retaining the robustness of narrow-band filtering for frequency dependent signal identification. After phase-matched filtering, the predicted arrival time is zero at all frequencies, so we test to see if the arrivals are within a time window similar to that used in the existing test. To test the procedure, we processed the same data set using five-degree and one-degree models with and without phase-matched filtering.

Book excerpt: As is apparent from the table of contents, the lectures at the Third Course of the International School of Applied Geophysics, Erice, March 27-April 4, 1980 (the first part of this volume) dealt with several applications of inversion to different geophy sical methods. For every field, the more general lectures come first, followed by those aimed at more specialized objectives. Not all topics are covered and the coverage is not uniform. The seismological section (especially the seismic reflection methods) is the most developed, and this is only partly due to the actual state of the art. Unfortunately, only abstracts are available for two of the lectures. The second part of the volume contains some short notes and contributions presented either by the lecturers themselves or by other participants. They do not necessarily deal with the process of inversion itself but with the preparation and meaning of the data to be inverted or with some original treatments of problems that were discussed in the afternoon sessions. The discussion sessions and the round table that followed the lectures were essential to the success of the Course and to an understanding ot the difterent perspectives of the various specialists. I hope that the group of very brilliant and willing geophysi cists that made the meeting so interesting will stay ~n touch, grow closer, and meet again. Close scientific cooperation among them could contribute much to the "unification" of geophysical science.
