Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Caribbean immigrants have now become part of the social landscape of many American cities. Few studies, however, have treated in detail the process of their integration in American society. American Odyssey assesses the development and adaptation, in both human and socio-economic terms, of the Haitian immigrant community in three boroughs of New York City. An informed and well-rounded portrayal of a Caribbean community in New York, this book offers a fresh theoretical view of the structuring of urban ethnicity and provides the ethnographic background essential to understanding the problems of the Haitian population in the United States.

Book A Hope in the Unseen

Download or read book A Hope in the Unseen written by Ron Suskind and published by Crown. This book was released on 2010-08-18 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inspiring, true coming-of-age story of a ferociously determined young man who, armed only with his intellect and his willpower, fights his way out of despair. In 1993, Cedric Jennings was a bright and ferociously determined honor student at Ballou, a high school in one of Washington D.C.’s most dangerous neighborhoods, where the dropout rate was well into double digits and just 80 students out of more than 1,350 boasted an average of B or better. At Ballou, Cedric had almost no friends. He ate lunch in a classroom most days, plowing through the extra work he asked for, knowing that he was really competing with kids from other, harder schools. Cedric Jennings’s driving ambition—which was fully supported by his forceful mother—was to attend a top college. In September 1995, after years of near superhuman dedication, he realized that ambition when he began as a freshman at Brown University. But he didn't leave his struggles behind. He found himself unprepared for college: he struggled to master classwork and fit in with the white upper-class students. Having traveled too far to turn back, Cedric was left to rely on his intelligence and his determination to maintain hope in the unseen—a future of acceptance and reward. In this updated edition, A Hope in the Unseen chronicles Cedric’s odyssey during his last two years of high school, follows him through his difficult first year at Brown, and tells the story of his subsequent successes in college and the world of work. Eye-opening, sometimes humorous, and often deeply moving, A Hope in the Unseen weaves a crucial new thread into the rich and ongoing narrative of the American experience.

Book North American Odyssey

Download or read book North American Odyssey written by Craig E. Colten and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-03-27 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking volume offers a fresh approach to conceptualizing the historical geography of North America by taking a thematic rather than a traditional regional perspective. Leading geographers, building on current scholarship in the field, explore five central themes. Part I explores the settling and resettling of the continent through the experiences of Native Americans, early European arrivals, and Africans. Part II examines nineteenth-century European immigrants, the reconfiguration of Native society, and the internal migration of African Americans. Part III considers human transformations of the natural landscape in carving out a transportation network, replumbing waterways, extracting timber and minerals, preserving wilderness, and protecting wildlife. Part IV focuses on human landscapes, blending discussions of the visible imprint of society and distinctive approaches to interpreting these features. The authors discuss survey systems, regional landscapes, and tourist and mythic landscapes as well as the role of race, gender, and photographic representation in shaping our understanding of past landscapes. Part V follows the urban impulse in an analysis of the development of the mercantile city, nineteenth- and twentieth-century planning, and environmental justice. With its focus on human-environment interactions, the mobility of people, and growing urbanization, this thoughtful text will give students a uniquely geographical way to understand North American history. Book An Immigrant s American Odyssey

Download or read book An Immigrant s American Odyssey written by Emory Lindquist and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Immigrant's American Odyssey: A Biography of Ernst Skarstedt Towering above this mass of published material is the man himself - sailor, vagabond, farmer, musician, poet, photographer, nature lover, champion of freedom for the human spirit. He was a restless person, agonizing over the fate of mankind; a rebel, full of protest; an enigma, unable to come to terms with himself; and a man seeking answers to questions for which there seemed to be no answers. Ernst Skarstedt's individualism and eccentricity produced responses to life that made him interesting and controversial. These qualities and others fashioned his career and destiny. Ernst Skarstedt, who grew up in the home of a distinguished professor of theology at Lund University, spurned an academic career and, after a brief experience as a seaman, followed his cherished goal of becoming a pioneer in the American West. Although he lived close to nature as a farmer in Kansas, Washington, and California during various periods, economic circumstances dictated that he abandon again and again the peace and solitude of life in rural areas for a career as a journalist in the city, an assignment he always viewed as temporary. The hostility of Ernst Skarstedt to the institutional church and to sophisticated standards of social custom and propriety was the result of his forthrightness and hatred of sham and hypocrisy. His condemnation of socialism, communism, and the prohibition move ment are clearly identified with his repudiation of everything that encroached upon his most cherished goal - freedom. His oppositionto racism and his early support of women's rights are examples of his respect for personality. He had tolerance for diversity of ideas and Opinions, but no tolerance for humbug, sham, conformity, and class consciousness. Book Our Fortunes Together an Immigrants Odyssey

Download or read book Our Fortunes Together an Immigrants Odyssey written by Manuel Fonseca and published by . This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A son tells a moving account of his immigration to the United States. Along with his parents and brother, their journey begins in post World War 11 Portugal in 1951 and ends upon arrival at Idlewild Airport in New York in 1957. Like many poor families, often times there are long periods of separation that must be endured to get here. The book further chronicles the trials and tribulations of an immigrant family adjusting to life in America in the 1960's, a turbulent time where many restrictions on social and cultural norms had been tossed out the window. The author goes on to describe how often times children of immigrant families acculturate faster than parents do, quite often resulting in alienation amongst generations. The writer describes growing up in America during that period of upheaval, rejecting his heritage, and becoming deeply embedded in the deadly drug and crime culture of the sixties and ultimately like the prodigal son, returns to reclaim his heritage and family. The book offers insights into the courage and sacrifices that poor immigrant families must make to arrive into the USA. It is a reminder of what it means to be an American and to cherish the freedom that underwrites its way of life. The title is taken from Paul Simons "America.."."Let us be lovers, we'll marry our fortunes together" and inspired by David Bowies graceful and timely cover for the courageous uniformed ground zero workers at the Concert For New York City at Madison Square Garden on October 20, 2001.

Book Undocumented

Download or read book Undocumented written by Dan-el Padilla Peralta and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An undocumented immigrant’s journey from a New York City homeless shelter to the top of his Princeton class Dan-el Padilla Peralta has lived the American dream. As a boy, he came here legally with his family. Together they left Santo Domingo behind, but life in New York City was harder than they imagined. Their visas lapsed, and Dan-el’s father returned home. But Dan-el’s courageous mother was determined to make a better life for her bright sons. Without papers, she faced tremendous obstacles. While Dan-el was only in grade school, the family joined the ranks of the city’s homeless. Dan-el, his mother, and brother lived in a downtown shelter where Dan-el’s only refuge was the meager library. There he met Jeff, a young volunteer from a wealthy family. Jeff was immediately struck by Dan-el’s passion for books and learning. With Jeff’s help, Dan-el was accepted on scholarship to Collegiate, the oldest private school in the country. There, Dan-el thrived. Throughout his youth, Dan-el navigated these two worlds: the rough streets of East Harlem, where he lived with his brother and his mother and tried to make friends, and the ultra-elite halls of a Manhattan private school, where he could immerse himself in a world of books and where he soon rose to the top of his class. From Collegiate, Dan-el went to Princeton, where he thrived, and where he made the momentous decision to come out as an undocumented student in a Wall Street Journal profile a few months before he gave the salutatorian’s traditional address in Latin at his commencement. Undocumented is a classic story of the triumph of the human spirit. It also is the perfect cri de coeur for the debate on comprehensive immigration reform. Praise for Undocumented “Dan-el Padilla Peralta’s story is as compulsively readable as a novel, an all-American tall tale that just happens to be true. From homeless shelter to Princeton, Oxford, and Stanford, through the grace not only of his own hard work but his mother’s discipline and care, he documents the America we should still aspire to be.” —Dr. Anne-Marie Slaughter, President of the New America Foundation
