Book The Yellowstone National Park

Download or read book The Yellowstone National Park written by Hiram Martin Chittenden and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Yellowstone National Park: Historical and Descriptive; Illustrated With Maps, View and Portraits In submitting to the public this second revision of "The Yellowstone," reference to the author's official connection, now permanently severed, with the region to which it relates may not be out of place. It has proven a rule almost without exception that those who have been assigned to duty in the Park, whether in public or private capacity, have become enamored of the service there and have accepted its termination with feelings of affectionate regret. Such was emphatically the author's experience. A two years' detail (1891-92) as assistant to the officer in charge of road construction, developed an interest in that region which has never since diminished. The first edition of "The Yellowstone" (1895) was an outgrowth of that early acquaintance. Later, in 1899, after the close of the Spanish-American war, the author was again sent to the Park, this time in exclusive charge of the road work. By a fortunate combination of circumstances Congress was induced to give upward of a million dollars for the work during the next seven years and thus to make possible the development of a really comprehensive system of highways. This work, which embraced the construction, more or less complete, of about four hundred miles of mountain roads, was of absorbing interest, and it is a matter of no especial credit that the author should have given to it, from beginning to end, the utmost of his time and abilities. It was in the fullest sense a labor of love and to an unusual degree one of direct personal supervision. Disappointment there was, as in all similar work, in the never-ceasing, but rarely successful, effort to bridge completely the chasm between an ideal result and that which available resources permit. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Texas state constitution of 1876 set aside three million acres of public land in the Texas Panhandle in exchange for construction of the state’s monumental red-granite capitol in Austin. That land became the XIT Ranch, briefly one of the most productive cattle operations in the West. The story behind the legendary XIT Ranch, told in full in this book, is a tale of Gilded Age business and politics at the very foundation of the American cattle industry. The capitol construction project, along with the acres that would become XIT, went to an Illinois syndicate led by men influential in politics and business. Unable to sell the land, the Illinois group, backed by British capital, turned to cattle ranching to satisfy investors. In tracing their efforts, which expanded to include a satellite ranch in Montana, historian Michael M. Miller demythologizes the cattle business that flourished in the late-nineteenth-century American West, paralleling the United States’ first industrial revolution. The XIT Ranch came into being and succeeded, Miller shows, only because of the work of accountants, lawyers, and managers, overseen by officers and a board of seasoned international capitalists. In turn, the ranch created wealth for some and promoted the expansion of railroads, new towns, farms, and jobs. Though it existed only from 1885 to 1912, from Texas to Montana the operation left a deep imprint on community culture and historical memory. Describing the Texas capitol project in its full scope and gritty detail, XIT cuts through the popular portrayal of great western ranches to reveal a more nuanced and far-reaching reality in the business and politics of the beef industry at the close of America’s Gilded Age.

Book excerpt: In January 1883, barely a month after the Northern Pacific Railroad (NPRR ) finished laying tracks to the "last crossing of the Yellowstone River," Minnesota's Winona Daily Republican proclaimed Livingston as the "future great city of the Yellowstone." With the arrival of the NPRR in 1882, the town boomed as it became the division headquarters for the railroad. Its future secured by the largest machine shops and roundhouse west of Minnesota, Livingston rapidly grew from frontier town to progressive city. By late 1883, its downtown area of substantial brick buildings housed more than 100 businesses, and supported a residential area of 2,000 stalwart citizens. Situated at the junction of the Northern Pacific branch to Yellowstone National Park, Livingston hosted the majority of the early tourist trade to "America's Wonderland of the West."
