Book excerpt: Excerpt from Artemisia, 1953: University of Nevada My personal interest in the university of nevada and its welfare Stems from two sources; first, that for four years i walked the campus and became a graduate in 1926; second, my immediate interest is the fact that as governor of the state of nevada it is a real pleasure for me to take a personal' part in your program today, there is no more important phase of government than education. Our educational system provides for us the very foundation upon which our nation has been built and upon which it will continue to expand and prosper to my mind, education is at one of its greatest crossroads in history today and is opposed-by the forces of communism. Because of this fact, education becomes more important than ever before in our history if we are to preserve our democratic way of life your future as citizens of this great country of ours is closely linked to your government's future. Never before has individual-welfare been so closely integrated with our government and its future as such affects the daily life of each and every one of us. It is my hope that as you go forward that you will bear in mind that the freedom of the individual is the basic concept of our democracy with that premise in mind, all of us can work together in building a better way of life for men the world over. Book The History of Nevada Vol 1

Download or read book The History of Nevada Vol 1 written by Sam Post Davis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Nevada, Vol. 1: Illustrated In the preparation and compilation of this work I am not unmindful of the fact that two others of a similar character have been published in this State in past years. But the progressive and changing character of Nevada during the past twenty years, and more especially during the last decade, renders another chronicle of its growth, and importance imperative. Beginning as a mining center, with a productiveness of the precious metals that finds no parallel in history, it is gradually becoming known as an agricultural State with an astonishing variety of soil-products such as a quarter of a century ago was not dreamed of. Irrigation has made a garden of its deserts, and dry-farming is fast obtaining a foothold within its borders, bringing wealth to sections which had heretofore been regarded as arid wastes. The important events which have taken place in this Commonwealth since its settlement and the stirring and changing nature of its life, can not be fully recorded even in three works. Anything like a comprehensive picture of its past must be taken from different angles of observation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book University of Nevada Studies Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from University of Nevada Studies, Vol. 2 The first part of this article was written under the direction of the Department of Education, University of Oregon, in 1905, and accepted as a Masters thesis by that institution in 1906. Part two is a comparative study of the data and results then obtained with similar data collected during the first part of the present academic year. For several years the college curricula have been of supreme interest not only to educators but to the intelligent public. Since the summer of 1886 the words "prescribed" and "elective" have become familiar terms in the educational periodicals. It was in May of this year that the struggle going on between the conservatives and radicals of the Harvard faculty culminated in a victory for the latter. This turn in favor of an elective system caused considerable alarm among the remaining colleges and universities of the United States. In New England the dismay is best understood when we read the paper addressed to the overseers of Harvard and signed by the presidents of leading institutions. The paper is a plea directed against the change in entrance conditions, and promotion to the Bachelors Degree. It was held that the proposed modifications would seriously affect the bearer of a degree, and further, would everywhere endanger the standing of American colleges. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the early 1870s until his death in 1902, John Mackay was among the richest men in the world and was without a doubt the wealthiest man to emerge from Nevada’s fabulous Comstock Lode. Author Michael J. Makley explores how, from his beginnings as a poor Irish immigrant, John Mackay developed a strong work ethic that distinguished him for the rest of his life. He came west to seek his fortune in the California Gold Rush and then moved on to Virginia City, Nevada, where he dealt in mining stocks and operated silver mines. After making a fortune in mining, he transferred his energies to banking and communications. John Mackay offers new insight into the life and achievements of this remarkable man. It also places Mackay in the broader context of his time, an era of robber barons and rampant corruption, rapidly advancing technology, national and international capitalism, and flagrant displays of newfound wealth. Even in this context, he stood out, not only for his contributions to Nevada and mining history, but also for his reputation as an important business leader fighting the consolidation and venality of corporate power in the Gilded Age. His actions freed the Comstock from a financial monopoly, resulting in moderated rates for the milling, timber, shipping, transportation, and water that made mining possible and precipitated the discovery and development of the ore field known as the “Big Bonanza.” Makley’s book recounts the life and career of one of the most successful men of his age, a capitalist of immense wealth who generously helped those around him and worked diligently in the public interest. This engaging biography will appeal to readers interested in the Comstock Lode and mining in the West during the latter part of the nineteenth century as well as general western history enthusiasts.
