Book excerpt: This monograph demonstrates the prominent historical position of China's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression in WW II and argues that China' s War of Resistance made great contributions to the Global Anti-Fascist Warfare. In specific, the book elaborates on the following six aspects. Firstly, China' s War of Resistance Against Japan represents the progressive trend in the world history; Secondly, China' s protracted war of resistance smashed Japan' s quick-battle strategy against China; Thirdly, China' s War of Resistance contained Japan' s world strategies of northward advance, southward advance, westward advance and its diplomatic strategies in general. Fourthly, China' s War of Resistance pushed forward the U.S.-Britain' s strategic shift in East Asia from passivism to pro-activism. Fifthly, China' s War of Resistance provided strong support to the successful operation of U.S.-Britain' s global strategy. Finally, Chinese wartime diplomacy enhanced the establishment and consolidation of the Global Anti-Fascist Alliance.

Book The Ecology of War in China

Download or read book The Ecology of War in China written by Micah S. Muscolino and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the interplay between war and the environment in Henan Province, a hotly contested frontline territory that endured massive environmental destruction and human disruption during the conflict between China and Japan that raged during World War II. In a desperate attempt to block Japan's military advance, Chinese Nationalist armies under Chiang Kai-shek broke the Yellow River's dikes in Henan in June 1938, resulting in devastating floods that persisted until after the war's end. Greater catastrophe struck Henan in 1942-1943, when famine took some two million lives and displaced millions more. Focusing on these war-induced disasters and their aftermath, this book conceptualizes the ecology of war in terms of energy flows through and between militaries, societies, and environments. Ultimately, Micah Muscolino argues that efforts to procure and exploit nature's energy in various forms shaped the choices of generals, the fates of communities, and the trajectory of environmental change in North China.

Book China at War

  • Author : Hans van de Ven

Download or read book China at War written by Hans van de Ven and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China’s mid-twentieth-century wars pose extraordinary interpretive challenges. The issue is not just that the Chinese fought for such a long time—from the Marco Polo Bridge Incident of July 1937 until the close of the Korean War in 1953—across such vast territory. As Hans van de Ven explains, the greatest puzzles lie in understanding China’s simultaneous external and internal wars. Much is at stake, politically, in how this story is told. Today in its official history and public commemorations, the People’s Republic asserts Chinese unity against Japan during World War II. But this overwrites the era’s stark divisions between Communists and Nationalists, increasingly erasing the civil war from memory. Van de Ven argues that the war with Japan, the civil war, and its aftermath were in fact of a piece—a singular process of conflict and political change. Reintegrating the Communist uprising with the Sino-Japanese War, he shows how the Communists took advantage of wartime to increase their appeal, how fissures between the Nationalists and Communists affected anti-Japanese resistance, and how the fractious coalition fostered conditions for revolution. In the process, the Chinese invented an influential paradigm of war, wherein the Clausewitzian model of total war between well-defined interstate enemies gave way to murky campaigns of national liberation involving diverse domestic and outside belligerents. This history disappears when the realities of China’s mid-century conflicts are stripped from public view. China at War recovers them.

Book The Nanking Atrocity 1937 1938

Download or read book The Nanking Atrocity 1937 1938 written by Bob Tadashi Wakabayashi and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2017-08-01 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2007, The Nanking Atrocity remains an essential resource for understanding the massacre committed by Japanese soldiers in Nanking, China during the winter of 1937-38. Through a series of deeply considered and empirically rigorous essays, it provides a far more complex and nuanced perspective than that found in works like Iris Chang’s bestselling The Rape of Nanking. It systematically reveals the flaws and exaggerations in Chang’s book while deflating the self-exculpatory narratives that persist in Japan even today. This second edition includes an extensive new introduction by the editor reflecting on the historiographical developments of the last decade, in advance of the 80th anniversary of the massacre.

Book Bold Plum

Download or read book Bold Plum written by Hsiao Li Lindsay and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2007 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hsiao Li Lindsay is a master storyteller and a historian's dream. She offers a day-by-day account of flight from Beijing [in 1941] with Japanese troops in pursuit, years with the Communist guerrillas in North China, childbirth on the trail, and refuge in Yenan. Bold Plum shows us the communist movement in all its precarious local variation. Lindsay's keen eye and prodigious memory are a gift to us all. Gail Hershatter, Professor of History, University of California, Santa Cruz, USA./ This is a rare item. Bold Plum has all the virtues of a remarkably sharp authorial memory and a story line that ranges from tragically massacred peasant villages to living intimately with Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Zhu De, Lin Biao, and the whole gang. Jerome Silbergeld, Professor of Chinese Art and Film, Princeton University, USA./ I just couldn't put Bold Plum down. Her courage and the choices she had to make are amazing. Fatima Jibrell, Goldman Environmental Prize 2002./ Hsiao Li lives in Beijing, China.
