Book Gradual Failure The Air War Over North Vietnam 1965 1966 Illustrated Edition

Download or read book Gradual Failure The Air War Over North Vietnam 1965 1966 Illustrated Edition written by Jacob Van Staaveren and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes over 100 maps, plans and illustrations The United States Air Force reached its nadir during the opening two years of the Rolling Thunder air campaign in North Vietnam. Never had the Air Force operated with so many restraints and to so little effect. These pages are painful but necessary reading for all who care about the nation’s military power. Jacob Van Staaveren wrote this book in the 1970s near the end of his distinguished government service, which began during the occupation of Japan; the University of Washington Press published his book on that experience in 1995. He was an Air Force historian in Korea during the Korean War, and he began to write about the Vietnam War while it was still being fought. His volume on the air war in Laos was declassified and published in 1993. Now this volume on the air war in North Vietnam has also been declassified and is being published for the first time. Although he retired to McMinnville, Oregon, a number of years ago, we asked him to review the manuscript and make any changes that seemed warranted. For the most part, this is the book he wrote soon after the war. Readers of this volume will also want to read the sequel, Wayne Thompson’s To Hanoi and Back: The U.S. Air Force and North Vietnam, 1966-1973, which tells the more encouraging story of how the Air Force employed airpower to far greater effect using a combination of better doctrine, tactics, technology, and training.

Book Vietnam The Decisive Battles

Download or read book Vietnam The Decisive Battles written by John Pimlott and published by Chartwell Books. This book was released on 2015-03-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vietnam: The Decisive Battles gives the reader added insights to the drama of the combat by means of computer-generated maps of the battlefields and specially commissioned artwork. Through this highly original format, the crucial moments in 17 key encounters of the war are pinpointed, from the French defeat at Dien Bien Phu in 1954 to the fall of Saigon in 1975. Together with a text of military scholarship, these presentations bring a new dimension to the longest - and arguably the most traumatic - war in American history. The battles selected cover the war on land and water, and in the air, and clearly show how the conflict developed in both military strategy and political initiatives. With maps, diagrams, and photographs, this superbly illustrated book records the action and the drama of war. Here are the military tactics, plus the high-tech weapons - napalm, Agent Orange, B-52s and Smart bombs -which not only became synonymous with terror but also produced effects designed to linger long after the war had finished. Profiles of the commanders and the leading politicians, stories of personal heroics, and features on Rest and Recreation, drug abuse, and other aspects of GI life serve to highlight the more intimate elements of the war.

It begins with the planning and execution of two initial limited air strikes, nicknamed Flaming Dart I and II. As the air campaign gradually expanded and the permissible targeting area moved northward, many in Washington believed "air power" could never win the war in the north. The United States Air Force reached its nadir during the opening two years of the Rolling Thunder air campaign in North Vietnam. Never had the Air Force operated with so many restraints and to so little effect. These pages are painful but necessary reading for all who care about the nation's military power. Mr. Grant explores the emotions felt not only by the men in battle but by the wives and others left behind, and the questions the war raised in their minds. Book Historical Dictionary of the War in Vietnam

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the War in Vietnam written by Ronald B. Frankum and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2011-06-10 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Southeast Asia, the Vietnam War altered forever the history, topography, people, economy, and politics of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV), the Republic of Vietnam (RVN), Cambodia, and Laos. That the war was controversial is an understatement as is the notion that the war can be understood from any one perspective. One way of understanding the Vietnam War is by marking its time with turning points, both major and minor, that involved events or decisions that helped to influence its course in the years to follow. By examining a few of these turning points, an organizational framework takes shape that makes understanding the war more possible. Historical Dictionary of the War in Vietnam emphasizes the international nature of the war, as well as provide a greater understanding of the long scope of the conflict. The major events associated with the war will serve as the foundation of the book while additional entries will explore the military, diplomatic, political, social, and cultural events that made the war unique. While military subjects will be fully explored, there will be greater attention to other aspects of the war. All of this is done through a chronology, an introductory essay, an extensive bibliography, and over 600 cross-referenced dictionary entries. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about the Vietnam War.
