Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Official Guide to the Botanic Gardens, Dominica: Illustrated With an Index of the Principal Plants History. The first steps towards the establishment of a Botanic Garden proper in Dominica were taken near the close of 1889, and in January, 1891 the present site was purchased by the Government. Previous to this time a small nursery had been maintained in the grounds of Government House. The first Curator in Dominica was Mr. Charles Murray, of the Edinburgh Botanic Gardens, who was appointed in September, 1889. He was transferred to Grenada in the following year, and succeeded by Mr. Henry F. Green in August, 1890. To Mr. Green fell the work of beginning the laying out of the grounds of the present garden. Mr. Green resigned in February, 1892, and was succeeded by the present Curator, Sir. Joseph Jones, of the Royal Gardens, Kew, who took up his duties in March, 1892. Objects of the Garden. At the time the Garden was originally established, careful consideration was given to the purpose which it should serve, as will be seen from the following passages by Dr. (now Sir Daniel) Morris in the Kew Bulletin for 1891: "Great stress has been laid on the objects in view in establishing this Botanical Station at Dominica. Book excerpt: Packed with the detailed local knowledge of author Paul Crask, a long-term resident, Bradt’s Dominica remains the only up-to-date standalone guide to this Caribbean island. In this new, thoroughly updated fourth edition, a range of accommodation and dining options are described in depth, guide and tour-operator listings are extensive, and 19 detailed maps help orientation. Taking an environmentally conscious and socially responsible approach to travel, the author couples essential advice on activities and practicalities with rich insights into the country’s natural environment, history and culture – including the Kalinago, the last of the region’s indigenous Amerindian people, whose descendants continue to live here today. Formerly considered an undeveloped Caribbean backwater, English-speaking Dominica is an increasingly favoured tourist destination. The government has invested significantly in island infrastructure following damage caused by extreme weather events in 2015 and 2017, and upmarket boutique hotels are opening. Despite such rising popularity, Dominica remains a place of unbridled, off-the-beaten-path adventure and discovery. This island of mountains, unspoiled rainforests, volcanoes, rivers and waterfalls has much to enchant a variety of travellers. Explore Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a World Heritage Site housing a network of trails that traverse rainforest-covered mountains and connect rivers, waterfalls and the Boiling Lake, a flooded fumarole that is the world’s second-largest hot-water lake. Ardent hikers craving further exploration can walk sections of the Wai’tukubuli National Trail or make for national parks such as Cabrits and Morne Diablotin. Wildlife-watchers can seek out rare parrots found nowhere else on Earth, the mountain chicken (actually one of the world’s largest frogs) or even a boa constrictor that is the subject of Kalinago legends. Scuba divers and snorkellers can marvel at pristine marine reserves boasting healthy coral reefs, while those who prefer to remain above the waves can take boat trips to enjoy excellent views of sperm whales. Whether you love nature or culture, hiking through wilderness or exploring underwater, the depth of detail and breadth of local insights that characterise Bradt’s Dominica render it the indispensable practical companion to exploring this exciting country.

Book Creole Cultures Vol 1

Download or read book Creole Cultures Vol 1 written by Violet Cuffy and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-12-16 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection considers the significance of Creole cultures within current, changing global contexts. With a particular focus on post-colonial Small Island Developing States, it brings together perspectives from academics, policy makers and practitioners including those based in Dominica, St Lucia, Seychelles and Mauritius. Together they provide a rich exploration of issues that arise in relation to safeguarding the intangible cultural heritage that sustains Creole identities. Commencing with considerations of the UNESCO (2003) Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH), the collection then presents case studies from the Seychelles, Mauritius, St. Lucia and Dominica. These attest to the many and different ways through which Creole cultural practices remain significant to the lived experiences of Creole communities. These chapters exemplify how through activities such as storytelling, singing, dancing, making artworks and the alternative economic practice of koudmen, Creole peoples sustain cultural identities that draw strength from their traditions. Yet there is also recognition of the continual struggle to sustain Creole cultural practices in the face of global economic and political pressures and related uncertainties. This global economic landscape also has an impact upon how Creole cultures are presented to tourists and hence upon the ways in which cultural practices are supported.

Book Plant Identification

Download or read book Plant Identification written by William Hawthorne and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important prerequisite for successful conservation is a good understanding of what we seek to conserve. Nowhere is this more the case than in the fight to protect plant biodiversity, which is threatened by human activity in many regions worldwide. This book is written in the belief that tools that enable more people to understand biodiversity can not only aid protection efforts but also contribute to rural livelihoods. Among the most important of those tools is the field guide. Plant Identification provides potential authors of field guides with practical advice about all aspects of producing user-friendly guides which help to identify plants for the purposes of conservation, sustainable use, participatory monitoring or greater appreciation of biodiversity. The book draws on both scientific and participatory processes, supported by the experience of contributors from across the tropics. It presents a core process for producing a field guide, setting out key steps, options and techniques available to the authors of a guide and, through illustration, helps authors choose methods and media appropriate to their context.
