Book English Pronunciation Practice

Download or read book English Pronunciation Practice written by Gunther Breaux and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2013-07-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a closer look go to: talk-or-walk.com Here is your co-teacher for pronunciation. We made the book, you make the copies. This book is for ESL students, from middle school to adult. Virtually all non-native speakers have trouble with certain sounds of English, primarily because they do not have those sounds in their native language. The three major problem areas are: light-right-white-night; beet-bat-bet-bit; and bat-pat-fat-vat. WHAT IS IT? 16 Battleship-type, communicative pair activities for the 16 most common ESL textbook topics. Thus, you can have a pronunciation focus with whatever unit or topic you are covering. These COORDINATE WORDS (usually about 20) feature the most difficult sounds for ESL students to distinguish and pronounce, such as: light-right; ship-sheep; pat-fat, pool-pull, gin-chin. The ANSWER WORDS (usually about 22) are vocabulary from the ESL topic, for example, FOOD: appetizer, bland, brunch, buffet, crispy, dessert, leftovers, sweet tooth, vegetarian. The similar sounding coordinate words create confusion. Clearing up that confusion improves both listening and pronouncing. It's also fun, challenging, related to the topic, and contains topic vocabulary. This book can be used every week for systematic improvement, or as a supplemental activity when time allows or when your textbook is particularly lacking.

Book English Pronunciation Models in a Globalized World

Download or read book English Pronunciation Models in a Globalized World written by Andrew Sewell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the topics of English accents and pronunciation. It highlights their connections with several important issues in the study of English in the world, including intelligibility, identity, and globalization. The unifying strand is provided by English pronunciation models: what do these models consist of, and why? The focus on pronunciation teaching is combined with sociolinguistic perspectives on global English, and the wider question asked by the book is: what does it mean to teach English pronunciation in a globalized world? The book takes Hong Kong – ‘Asia’s World City’ – as a case study of how global and local influences interact, and of how decisions about teaching need to reflect this interaction. It critically examines existing approaches to global English, such as World Englishes and English as a Lingua Franca, and considers their contributions as well as their limitations in the Hong Kong context. A data-based approach with quantitative and qualitative data anchors the discussion and assists in the development of criteria for the contents of pronunciation models. English Pronunciation Models in a Globalized World: Accent, Acceptability and Hong Kong English discusses, among other issues: Global English: A socio-linguistic toolkit Accents and Communication: Intelligibility in global English Teaching English Pronunciation: The models debate Somewhere Between: Accent and pronunciation in Hong Kong Researchers and practitioners of English studies and applied linguistics will find this book an insightful resource.

Book excerpt: It's not what you say, it's the way that you say it ... There have long been debates about 'correct' pronunciation in the English language, and Britain's most distinguished linguistic expert, David Crystal, is here to set the record straight. Sounds Appealing tells us exactly why, and how, we pronounce words as we do. Pronunciation is integral to communication, and is tailored to meet the demands of the two main forces behind language: intelligibility and identity. Equipping his readers with knowledge of phonetics, linguistics and physiology - with examples ranging from Eliza Doolittle to Winston Churchill - David Crystal explores the origins of regional accents, how they are influenced by class and education, and how their peculiarities have changed over time.
