When Mrs. Cheveley arrives in London, she brings with her a letter that threatens to ruin Sir Chiltern forever—his whole life threatens to come crumbling down. The following twenty-four hours are filled with theft, blackmail, farce, and biting social commentary. An Ideal Husband was first performed in 1893 at the Haymarket Theatre, and it was immediately successful. On April 6th, the same day it transferred to the Criterion Theatre, Oscar Wilde was arrested for gross indecency, and his name was removed from the play. Wilde revised the play for publication in 1899, taking steps to add written stage directions and character descriptions in order to make the work more accessible to the public. Today it’s Wilde’s second most popular play, after The Importance of Being Earnest. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book excerpt: One of the nineteenth century's most successful and most frequently revived plays, An Ideal Husband has divided critics more than any other of Wilde's plays. Treating political intrigue, financial fraud, blackmail, scandal and spin, and the role of women in public life, it is a play which engaged with issues of vital importance to its late-Victorian audience, which continue to resonate today. Sos Eltis, a specialist in Victorian drama and its relation to women's issues, provides a stimulating new perspective on An Ideal Husband, through an introduction that looks at its relation with contemporary social purity campaigns, women's rights, and political scandals. The introduction also gives a substantial performance history, with particular reference to the play's film versions and the influential Peter Hall theatre production.

Book Cultural Gene of the Institution

Download or read book Cultural Gene of the Institution written by Jiaming Sun Ph.D. and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2023-12-07 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a close-up view of American university life based on the author's intimate, firsthand experience across various institutions. Through "American Campus Observation," the author investigates the characteristics of Western cultural attributes by utilizing sociological methods, including field observation and comparative analysis. The book elucidates the underlying reasons behind specific cases and common phenomena, particularly the distinctions rooted in Western and Eastern cultural backgrounds. With over two decades of life on both Western and Eastern campuses, the author underscores the significant role of "cultural genes" as fundamental factors influencing system design and practice in institutional structures. While discussions on Western culture can be found in various publications, there is a notable absence of articles or books that take a sociological perspective with a cultural gene framework, focusing on campus life and institutional development. This book fills that void.

Download or read book The Oxford Companion to Classical Civilization written by Simon Hornblower and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-09-11 with total page 912 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What did the ancient Greeks eat and drink? What role did migration play? Why was emperor Nero popular with the ordinary people but less so with the upper classes? Why (according to ancient authors) was Oedipus ('with swollen foot') so called? For over 2,000 years the civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome have captivated our collective imagination and provided inspiration for so many aspects of our lives, from culture, literature, drama, cinema, and television to society, education, and politics. Many of the roots of the way life is lived in the West today can be traced to the ancient civilizations, not only in politics, law, technology, philosophy, and science, but also in social and family life, language, and art. Beautiful illustrations, clear and authoritative entries, and a useful chronology and bibliography make this Companion the perfect guide for readers interested in learning more about the Graeco-Roman world. As well as providing sound information on all aspects of classical civilization such as history, politics, ethics, morals, law, society, religion, mythology, science and technology, language, literature, art, and scholarship, the entries in the Companion reflect the changing interdisciplinary aspects of classical studies, covering broad thematic subjects, such as race, nationalism, gender, ethics, and ecology, confirming the impact classical civilizations have had on the modern world.
