Written in a straightforward and persuasive style, Defoe addresses the pressing issues of poverty and social inequality in England, offering practical solutions to improve the lives of the disadvantaged. Set in the context of the early 18th century, the book reflects Defoe's deep understanding of the socio-economic challenges facing the nation during this period. Through his astute observations and logical arguments, Defoe challenges the status quo and calls for meaningful change in society. His writing is both engaging and thought-provoking, making a strong impact on readers. Daniel Defoe, known for his seminal work 'Robinson Crusoe', draws upon his own experiences and observations to deliver a powerful message in 'An Humble Proposal to the People of England'. As a prolific author and social commentator, Defoe's insights continue to resonate with contemporary readers, highlighting the enduring relevance of his work. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in history, politics, and social justice, as it offers valuable insights into the challenges of the past and present.

Book excerpt: "[...]though there may be too much of that sort too, among a few of the drunken, loitering part of mankind, and they suffer for it sufficiently in their poverty, yet that, I say, is not the point, idleness is not here a national crime, the English are not naturally a slothful, indolent, or lazy people. But it is an application proper to the method of business which is wanting among us, and in this we shall find room for reproof on one hand, and direction on the other; and our reader, I dare say, will acknowledge there is reason for both.[...]".

Book Money Power and Print

Download or read book Money Power and Print written by Charles Ivar McGrath and published by Associated University Presse. This book was released on 2008 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This collection gathers the expertise of scholars in several disciplines to examine the manner in which financial and economic arguments were expressed in pamphlets, broadsides, and longer works of literature in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and to assess to what extent the political realities of the day were informed by these debates or, alternatively, shaped by that rhetoric. The contributors to the volume draw upon an extensive variety of contemporary sources and modern analyses of the formative years of the financial revolution to reexamine many of the existing conventional ideas about the relationship between money, power, and print, and to suggest that the subject is far more complex and interrelated than most studies up to now have indicated. Particular attention is paid to the fact that the financial revolution did not occur in London in isolation from the various regions of the British Isles." "The essays address the question of how money, power, and print influenced the contemporary emergence of a radically different public finance structure in the British empire and how retrospective understanding of the results have influenced historical readings of the texts and the events. A number of contributions offer detailed analyses of particular moments or structures in the reshaping of the public financial sphere, such as the parliamentary and pamphlet debate over the establishment of the Bank of England and proposals for a land bank as an alternative. Other essays focus on broader themes illustrative of larger trends during the period, such as the Scottish support for an expedition to Madagascar to take advantage of presumed pirate treasure on the island."--BOOK JACKET.

Book The Transformation of a Peasant Economy

Download or read book The Transformation of a Peasant Economy written by John Goodacre and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The market town has been dismissed as an incompletely formed urban community; in fact it was the primary urban unit in pre-industrial England. This study places the market town at the centre of the transformation of early-modern England, both catalysing changes in agriculture and experiencing, in a distinctive fashion, the urbanisation that was to occur a century or more later in the great industrial and commercial centres of Europe. In the two centuries after 1500 the rural economy changed from a pattern of subsistence to 'improved' farming. The first great enclosures took place during this time, but the economic base for this revolution was the growth of local trading, centred on markets and local communications networks. This redistribution of produce, provisions and information was the motor of specialisation and hence modernisation. The strength of this study is in its detailed research into this process in one representative locality, and the sensitive extrapolation of local experiences on to the national and European scale. By integrating in one book the themes of rural transformation and early urbanisation this account of one typical midland market town demonstrates the continuing vigour of the discipline of local history.
