Download or read book Egg and Ego written by J.M.W. Slack and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1999 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A light-hearted look at the nature of academic science, intended for anyone interested in biology but particularly for biology students who want to find out what the future holds in store. The "Egg" of the title refers to the science of developmental biology, which is the speciality of the author, and which provides the material for many of the anecdotes. The "Ego" relates to the vanity of the scientists themselves. Academic scientists have to struggle to maintain their research funding. To do this they must persuade other scientists that they are very good, and that means working at a good institution, publishing papers in the most fashionable journals and giving lectures at the most prestigious meetings. Success often goes to those with the largest egos and it is their style of operation that is described in this book. The author is a well-known scientist who has worked at both universities and research institutes. He has published over 100 scientific papers and an influential book about embryonic development: "From Egg to Embryo".
Download or read book Transforming University Biochemistry Teaching Using Collaborative Learning and Technology written by Penny J. Gilmer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-10 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One aim of Gilmer’s captivating text on university pedagogy is to show that biochemistry (or any science) does not consist solely of facts to be learned, but is a way of thinking about the world. Her purpose, both in this book and in her classroom, is to make her students into critical thinkers rather than passive learners. The chapters cast a critical eye over research into enhanced education techniques such as collaborative learning. Gilmer describes the action research she conducted in her own biochemistry undergraduate classroom into ways of improving the learning environment. She offers various perspectives on the make-up of her classroom, including an analysis of ethnographic data. The tools Gilmer employs as she hones her teaching skills include collaborative learning and technology. She views the classroom through various theoretical perspectives: social constructivism, cultural-historical activity theory, and a theory that involves the dialectic between the structure of the learning environment and the agency of the learners (a group among whom she includes herself). She provides a wealth of autobiographical detail as well as the results of her action research, which followed up on its original subjects after an interval of 11 years, to see what impact her course had on their professional growth. Above all, this volume is proof of what can be achieved in education when teachers are as interested in the process of learning as they are in their subject itself.

Download or read book Truthful Fictions Conversations with American Biographical Novelists written by Michael Lackey and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-02-27 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new collection of interviews, some of America's most prominent novelists identify the key intellectual developments that led to the rise of the contemporary biographical novel, discuss the kind of historical 'truth' this novel communicates, indicate why this narrative form is superior to the traditional historical novel, and reflect on the ideas and characters central to their individual works. These interviews do more than just define an innovative genre of contemporary fiction. They provide a precise way of understanding the complicated relationship and pregnant tensions between contextualized thinking and historical representation, interdisciplinary studies and 'truth' production, and fictional reality and factual constructions. By focusing on classical and contemporary debates regarding the nature of the historical novel, this volume charts the forces that gave birth to a new incarnation of this genre.
Download or read book Biochemistry and Physiology of Plant Hormones written by T.C. Moore and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biochemistry and Physiology of Plant Hormones is intended primarily as a textbook or major reference for a one-term ;intermediate-Ievel or ad vanced course dealing with hormonal regulation of growth and develop ment of seed plants for students majoring in biology, botany, and applied botany fields such as agronomy, forestry, and horticulture. Additionally, it should be useful to others who wish to become familiar with the topic in relation to their principal student or professional interests in related fields. It is assumed that readers will have a background in fundamental biology, plant physiology, and biochemistry. The dominant objective of Biochemistry and Physiology of Plant Hor mones is to summarize, in a reasonably balanced and comprehensive way, the current state of our fundamental knowledge regarding the major kinds of hormones and the phytochrome pigment system. Written pri marily for students rather than researchers, the book is purposely brief. Biochemical aspects have been given priority intentionally, somewhat at the expense of physiological considerations. There are extensive citations ofthe literature-both old and recent-but, it is hoped, not so much docu mentation as to make the book difficult to read. The specific choices of publications to cite and illustrations to present were made for different reasons, often to illustrate historical development, sometimes to illustrate ideas that later proved invalid, occasionally to exemplify conflicting hy potheses, and most often to illustrate the current state of our knowledge about hormonal phenomena.

Download or read book Honest Nutrition written by Ira Edwards and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2007-07-09 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honest Nutrition is an attempt to do what textbooks and hundreds of diet books do not. Nutrition textbooks do not tell you that this science is in its infancy, nor how many "scientific" claims are open to question, based on faulty research or simple hunches. If they include some of the biochemical and physiological context of nutrition, they still omit financial, social and political aspects. After attempting to understand the prejudice against vitamins and supplements among the industrial-medical-political Big Brother (IMP-BB) and the lack of evidence for most alternatives, there is still some useful information. Opposing philosophies are denoted as SUPR (SUrgery-PRescription orientation) and UTHR (Unconventional Therapies, Herbal Remedies.) Honest Nutrition uses a large alphabetical section to give easy access to useful information about many diseases and nutritional therapies. Honest Nutrition includes information about hormone resistance diseases, cryptic infections as a cause of "unknown etiology" diseases, and the effect of nutrition on behavior and criminality. Some claims: 1. Obesity always involves hormones, sometimes with positive-feedback loops, which is why "Just eat less and exercise" seldom works. 2. A major factor in arterial disease is viscous blood, resulting in part from a lack of omega-3 fat. Cholesterol lowering does not help. 3. Some heart attacks may be due to hormonal effects, involving the hormone ouabain, and preventable with an extract of the herb strophanthus. 4. Many, or most North Americans suffer serious lack of nutrients: vitamin D, magnesium, and plant nutrients. The author challenges the medical establishment to examine their doctrines and learn how to help people suffering from nutritional diseases. Many technical terms are included. The non-scientific reader is asked to skip over these, to gain a useful knowledge of nutrition.

Where medical entrapment was very real, and real constitutional health and civil rights had already been removed by stealth, to continue a toxic but profitable status quo. Such a hoax on civil health and constitutional rights is something every family should know. The Author links pathways of ‘civil management’ and industry to bioaccumulation in agriculture, food, medicine and water management that has bioaccumulation effects and is surely; A Toxic Harvest for future generations fall. Awareness of such, it is hoped, will inspire thought, words and actions that decontaminate and support healthy genetics for all of Life.

This book was released on 2023-05-12 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photosynthesis is considered the most important process in the biosphere. A chain of four complex protein molecules localized in the chloroplasts (Photosystem II (PSII), Photosystem I (PSI), Cytochrome b6f (Cyt.b6f), and ATP synthase), plus several removable proteins, known as Plastoquinone (PQ), Plastocyanin (PC), Cytochrome c6 (Cyt.c6), and Ferredoxin (Fd), recreate or convert the solar energy into a double electron stream, both cyclic and linear. This book proposes the hypothesis that the physiological motif of plastocyanin dimorphism is a hallmark of higher plants. The book will also serve as a methodological guide to photosynthesis, as it offers various methods for the study of proteins.
