Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the National Association of Elocutionists: Tenth Annual Meeting, Held at Buffalo, New York, June 24 to 28, 1901 Mr. Dillenbeck: 111 r. President, Ladies and Gentlemen - It took a second invitation from our worthy President to get me to con sent to occupy this position, and as soon as I made up my mind to take it and had chosen my topics, I wrote to various members of the Association, asking them if they would be prepared to discuss the topics under consideration. Without exception, I think. Every one replied that it would be utterly impossible for them to think of such a thing as they were entirely too busy, or something of that kind. So I made up my mind that we would have to rely upon voluntary work from the Association. The topic under consideration this morning, Atmosphere, is one full of meat and of great importance to us all. First, What do we mean by atmosphere? Second, What does it contribute to a reading? Third, How create this atmosphere? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address to the National Association of Elocutionists The tongue, and not the jaw, is the agent of articulation; but one can scarcely be con scious of the tongue's positions while the jaw is constantly opening and closing. These motions really effect nothing. Voice is formed in the throat, and its emission through the mouth is impeded rather than facilitated by this masticatory action. The clear articula tion of consonants, too, depends on lingual firmness, and this is rendered impossible by the looseness of the jaw; substituting for in ternal impulse what some one has aptly de scribed as chin-whack. Consonants in this way lose their essential percussive quality, and the whole of speech becomes slurred and indistinct. Download or read book The Sons of Allen written by Rev. Horace Talbert and published by Nyreepress Publishing. This book was released on 2016-06-24 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1906 by Rev. Horace Talbert, some fifty years after slavery ended, AME church history comes to life through profiles of 122 men-faithful devotees, or spiritual "sons" of Bishop Richard Allen, founder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Founded in 1816, the AME church was the first organized African American denomination in the United States. These sterling portraits of the "sons of Allen," mostly AME pastors, but also leading black men from other areas of industry, awaken the dreamer within... In celebration of the 200th anniversary of the founding of the AME church, the descendants of the author have reissued this remarkable book, which includes a "Sketch" by Rev. Talbert about his beloved alma mater Wilberforce University. This edition also has new material from Talbert's family members: a preface from Mrs. Suesetta Talbert McCree, a granddaughter of Rev. Talbert, believed to be the last surviving member of her generation; and a foreword by Rev. Malcolm Hassan Stephens, an Itinerant Elder of the AME Church and a great-great grandson of Rev. Talbert. The Sons of Allen is excellent primary source material for those interested in AME Church history, African American history, American history and genealogy. All readers will be inspired by the lives these men set forth to live, encouraged by the AME motto: "God our Father, Christ our redeemer, the Holy Spirit our comforter, Humankind our family."
