Such a work is contemplated in these pages; the materials are gathered from the most authentic sources, and have been arranged in consecutive order, with a view of avoiding, on the one hand the dry matter-of - fact style of the antiquary, on the other the verbose style which ignores facts and details, and indulges rather in poetical imaginings than in accuracy.
